The Maltsters last winter had their opening hours pinned to the door but on at least two occasions I was there they were closed within their stated opening hours

That may well explain it. If I turned up on a hire boat in winter with little daylight left and found a pub shut when it's supposed to be open I would be very ticked off. I believe the Ship is closed and it's a long walk to the Fur and Feather. I'm going to make a point of phoning up now rather than relying on the published hours. I know pubs are struggling and I support them as much as I can but they do themselves no favours by closing at random, equally by booting customers out early. If a pub operates irregular hours then customers will get fed up and not return.

  2. Don't do Facebook but the website was active until very recently promoting their 'bottomless' roasts and did advertise winter hours. Reduced trade could indeed be a factor, the Dog has been closed over the winter for a few years now. At this rate I'm going to be having dry holidays! :default_icon_e_surprised:

  3. The Maltsters website appears to be down and I think Griff reported that it was closed on a Saturday. I wonder if this is a coincidence or if there is a problem? I know they run on reduced hours in winter but should be open at weekends?

  4. ....this was in February, as Faircraft Loynes yard was full. We moored overnight with no issues but moored as close as we could to the Hotel so there would have been space behind us if needed.

    Edit:

Should add of course that Faircraft Loynes don't allow private moorings so that is not an option in itself.

I could have moored on the granary staithe I suppose, but it feels really cheeky to do that.

We usually manage to moor in Faircraft Loynes yard during the winter. The yard staff are very helpful and we've only been turned away a couple of times when there is literally no room. On those occassions we were advised to moor at the Granary Staithe and did so without any problem. I dont think it's an issue out of season and coupled with high river levels it shouldn't be a problem.

so wondering if it’s always windy down there.

I've tended to find that. The wind always seems to blow from the North bank which was always the 'pub' side although I think they have taken over the farm side too. Mooring on that bank in a strong cross wind without the aid of bow thrusters can be a bit of a challenge (been there..... etc)

the boat's "official" air draft is 6 foot 10 but I know it's something less)

You're right, I think its more like 6 foot 8 or even a bit less. It's a great boat for winter...........

Glad you enjoyed the White Horses, both cracking pubs. Upton Dyke can be a bit tight particularly if the Eastwood Whelpton boats are in. Worth the effort though. :91_thumbsup::default_beerchug:

The photos online show the original, very traditional wooden wheel. It's been replaced with this one, however.

I quite like it except if you're 6 foot tall like me then room is limited and you have to sit with legs astride.

For some reason I didn't take many internal photos (doh) but you can just make out the old wheel in this photo, beautifully made. Wonder what happened to it. Lovely boat, if I had the money, I'd make Barnes an offer they couldn't refuse!!

It is indeed still a cracking little boat, Howard. Although it could do with some light upgrades (e.g carpet and sofa are a little worn

Yes, still got the Royalls carpet so it's done well. It had a gas heater just behind the front door ( to the right of your photo) which was really useful but I think gas regs make them illegal now.

Re the test run, we have to do them now with Bridgecraft, I suspect all yards are doing it after that tragedy in Yarmouth.

  10. Re Malcolm and Simon comments, yes, Royalls were meticulous in their presentation both inside and out.

Cracking little boat nonetheless, perfect for solo or a couple. Might even get through Wroxham even with high river levels. We hired a day boat a few years ago to get through Potter Heigham and the only hire boat we saw through there was Velvet 2
