  1. Hi Sachmo

I hire from Swancraft which is the yard next door. However I believe the owner of Silverline is called Colin. His wife is Lesley I think.

Takeover times are always a tricky one. It can depend on a lot of factors at the boatyard, if any repairs were necessary, the condition the boat came back in, how busy the yard is etc etc. So most yards play it safe and give a time which they would expect to meet. I think the golden rule however is not to assume. My approach with a new yard has always been to arrive at the yard, say I am here and can you tell me when the boat will be ready please? You will usually be given a time and most yards do not object if you take the boat early as long as it’s ready. In fact it can help the staff by staggering the handovers. However be prepared to wait, the Yare pub up the road is a very pleasant place to do this.

The yard I use do not charge for parking, but not sure what Silverline’s policy is. If they do charge it may be around £10 - £15 per car.

Again I’ve not had Tesco deliver but I think there is an issue with the delivery address like it must be the same as your card???? Anyone else know? There is a good Budgens store on the main street in Brundall which is reasonably priced. We normally stock up there before we board the boat, its quick and convenient.

Hope you have a great time!!!

  2. Hi

In June, over a 2 week holiday, we have typically used around 100 litres. This is going all over the system but not using the heating (or very little).

However in February we used over 90 quids worth of fuel in one week. We did go through Yarmouth but I think the main culprit was the warm air heating. We had it on a fair amount and I believe they consume typically about three quarters of a litre per hour. A boiler would use a similar amount I imagine, possibly more. We hired Swan Royale last year which still has the dipstick! I would trust them implicitly however and don’t generally bother to dip the fuel.

  3. Hi

I’m a regular with Swancraft but have not hired Rhapsody (It’s a Shadow hull, one they build themselves). Swancraft use inverters which run from the battery, so you are OK up to around 1,000 watts. I think generators are pretty much unique to Barnes Brinkcraft, as far as I am aware all Swancraft boats have conventional gas cookers.

If you are using the inverter for any length of time it’s advisable to run the engine however.

If in any doubt give Swancraft a bell and speak to Tony. Top class yard in my humble opinion.

  4. Many thanks for sharing your holiday tale with us Barry, glad you had a good time. That looks some craft. I managed to make a pigs ear of mooring a 28 footer at Ranworth last month, never mind a 48 feet Emperor!!! Like the sound of your buffet, making me hungry!!

Bet you can’t wait for you boat to be finished!

  5. Hi Bernie

Not hired that exact one but have hired Swan Royale many times (again in May) which is very similar and just a bit longer at 32 foot. They are an Alphacraft hull, very roomy and comfortable. The raised helm position gives very good visibility particularly with the canopy down. Forward cabin (usually en suite) has a double berth. They handle well and are economical on fuel. Good choice of boat style I would suggest, certainly one of my favourites.

    Have a great time!

  6. I have been with Richardson’s (albeit few years ago) and cannot fault them. Also in terms of value for money they take some beating. However as we really need a yard that’s handy for the railway, we started using Swancraft a few years ago and to be honest we have been so impressed we have stuck with them ever since. What about Swan Regal? It’s a bigger boat and they will take dogs.

Like most yards Swancraft don’t hire in winter so we have been going to Faircraft Loynes in December. They are a bit more expensive, as most of the boats are quite new. We had a slight issue last year but general service, particularly at the quayside, is excellent. I’m not sure what their doggie policy is.

  7. Thanks Carol!! After thinking about it I knew I had been in during the eighties – once walking along the road to Acle from the Bridge and the second time we moored near Acle Dyke and walked along that way.

I also found the pub listed in my 1989 copy of the Good Beer Guide, listed as Reba’s Riverside Inn and apparently selling Courage Best Bitter, John Smiths Bitter and Woodfordes Wherry Best Bitter. Needless to say I didn’t walk there for the John Smiths ! :o

Have you got any more tucked away in your archives? :)

  8. Hi Carol

Ah the clue about the name was a big help. I’d been scratching my head for a while over that one. As usual I was sure that I had been in !! It was quite a good real ale outlet if memory serves. It was a Whitbread pub I believe at one time, so probably would have been Lacons originally.

The year, I’m guessing could be a bit later than you might think, I’ll have a stab at 1994. I do remember walking to the pub, it was from Acle Bridge as I don’t think the Bridge sold any beer at the time. Had quite a ‘chintzy’ interior as I remember. Happy daze !!

  9. Well done DG ! :clap

Thanks for the link Carol, very interesting, not seen that one before. Not written by a Watney’s fan obviously! I didn’t realise that Starlight was so weak, it could just about have been sold to children as a non beer! :o

Further South…I’ll have a guess at Coldham Hall.

  10. Funnily enough I don’t think Sutton Staithe was ever Watney’s, in fact it was always an oasis for Adnams being only one of about 3 pubs on the broads selling real ale in the mid 70’s.

I think the date in Carol’s photo must be after 1982 and the Norwich Brewery closed in 1985, so I’ll have a stab at 1984.

Been racking my brains over the pub though, but Clive could be on the mark with the Swan.

    cheersbar
