  1. Hello

Lovely to see.  Although I did my RAF service long after these brave men did theirs.  I have always felt that they were forgotten and blamed for doing something that was their job and what they were ordered to.  The politicians have a lot to answer for!

Hopefully the vandals won't get to this marvellous monument and treat it with the respect it deserves.  In Bulford we had a WW1 bronze statue to recognise the work of all the Wiltshire soldiers during that time.  It was stolen and later found in a local scrap yard having been cut up and sold.

My military service was between 1975 and 1987, with only one proper tour in an operational station (Leuchars) - Akrotiri and Upavon were the other two.

  2. Having hired for a number of years before buying into Moonlight Shadow, most of the boats we hired were the same as Star Gem (which we hired twice) with the walk arounds level all the way around.  I saw a few with the deck that went lower towards the back of the boat, but not too many.

Now we are in MS which has the lowered back I can see the benefits as depending on the tides etc you can generally find an area to disembark that does not involve too much of a 'jump' up or down.

So now I am wondering, why were more boats not made like MS and Absolute Freedom?  Was it thought to be a safety thing or just that the 'flat' ones were easier to build.

On a totally different thought.  What happens to all the moulds that have been used to make boats over the years?  Is there a big 'mould in the sky storage yard' like you see in America for all the old aircraft?

  3. Hi

Are there any friendly radio controlled model aircraft clubs in Broadland?

We often bring one of our models with us 'Guppy', because that is its shape, and Martin flies it off the water, normally on Salhouse Broad.  Obviously keeping a weather eye our for other boaters.

It would be nice to be able to possibly meet with some like minded people and to add another club to our ever increasing number of those that we have visited.

  4. It is all over the local news tonight about a number of new 20mph areas that have been brought in, in areas of Bristol.  It appears to cause strong opinions on both sides, as in does it save lives or just become a nuisance, and of course a number of motorists are totally ignoring it.

Are there similar things happening in other areas.  Do they work?

The roads in our area are particularly bad and have got worse in the recent bad weather so travelling slightly slower may well help stop damage to your vehicle when you find yourself dropping into the ever increasingly large/deep potholes.

We always say that we know when we have reached Wiltshire because the road network is rubbish and there is an accurate shortage of catseyes.   Goodness knows how much the council would have to pay out if everyone claimed for damage to their vehicles. :cry

  5. I've just come across this.

I must admit that since the digital changeover even in the most historically awful reception areas we manage to get a good picture.  In fact last time we were on board at Brundall we still had a good picture when we took the aerial down.

    Sometimes progress is good!

  6. I must admit to being a 'soft southerner;, albeit only just south of the M4!   Seeing all these photos gives makes me cuddle closer to our open wood fire.

We were due to be up there the week before Christmas in 2012, but decided against it because of the weather.  Come to that 'Christmas was cancelled' that year as we couldn't go away for new year in the caravan because of the floods.

Global warming, our climate getting hotter?  It appears not - just wet, wind and sometimes extremely cold - but very beautiful if you do not have to venture out.

  7. Hello

It appears that this 'I am on holiday' email has started again.  I received one yesterday stating that someone I know was on holiday in 'Kiev, Ukraine'.   It appeared, unfortunately, that his email address had been hacked.  I let him know and he is dealing with it.

This is the only one I have received for a while, the span folders on gmail seem to be more efficient than the one I used to have on btinternet.

We always delete these straight away, but it obviously works otherwise these people would not send them.  There are some extremely vulnerable people who are being taken in, which is criminal.

In fact, imho the whole thing is criminal.  But I haven't heard of any prosecutions!!

  8. Seeing all the ones on the news recently, who have washed up without their mothers, after the bad weather has been very sad.  Hopefully the charity that is looking after them all is managing and that a fair number are now back into the wild.

The bad weather over the past few months has a lot to answer for.  We are lucky living in landlocked Wiltshire and have not had quite such a battering.

  9. Hello.

I think that £3 a night is a small amount to pay for the help of the ranger.  If the wind is blowing us away from the mooring I have great difficulty getting off Shadow (being not as agile as I should be and a bit of a wimp!), so having someone there to catch the ropes for me is a bonus.

We had horrendous problems last time we were on board in a similar situation at the Reedham Ferry (where there is no-one to help) where the wind changed just as we came into moor and blew us off the  mooring.  It took quite a while for me to sort it out, and two minutes later it absolutely threw it down which is probably why the wind got up.

  10. Hi

We were on board over the Christmas week and the only problems we found were the lack of fuel/pumpouts over the period close to our moorings.  There were still a number available but not convenient.  Water was still switched on at Loddon and of course we made good use of the BA electrical points.  As mentioned, you need a supply of the £1 cards.  We add to our stock every time we find an outlet.

The next time we are scheduled to be up there is the first week in March,  The last time we have the use of Shadow this year is for two weeks in November, then two weeks the following February.  Lots of warm clothes needed, but it is really quiet and if you are a fisher-person very relaxing.  Some excellent sunrises - if only I remembered the camera!

I think there are some yards who were hiring this Christmas, but they appeared to be just in the North.

All I can say is go for it, but be aware of the need to be more careful especially in the icy weather as we found that not many mooring areas were gritted.

  11. Hi

Thanks for this reply 'Freedom', you were one of the one's we thought might be an option.

Have had a look at Swancraft and none of theirs seem to be booked over the period so they are unlikely to be on site, there is also no-one in the office at the moment.  If the owner still has his motor-caravan I expect he will be in warmer pastures!

Matt.  The people on directly after us have just let me know that they are not taking the week which takes the pressure off slightly with what time we have to leave on the Saturday or even leave it until the Sunday.  Is anyone likely to be on Thunder the Christmas week or the week after?

  12. Good morning.

I have just been on to Brooms to see what their opening hours are for the Christmas week.

They told me that they are closed from about 16:00 on 20 December (or when it gets dark if earlier) and will not re-open until 2 January!

We are on board Moonlight Shadow from 21-27 December.  Does anyone know of anywhere that will be open, in the Brundall area, during that period to pump us out and refuel us on either 26 or 27 December?

    Thanks.
