Guest
I have a JGM Madeira with a rather loud BMC engine under my feet. At anything above 2500rpm it's difficult to have a conversation. I don't have any soundproofing and the vents to the engine compartment are inside the cockpit which makes it even louder. I have been looking at ASAP supplies and have seen the soundproofing sheets that are 45mm thick. They are pretty expensive and the engine bay area on the Madeira is big, the entire area under the cockpit floor which includes fuel and water tanks. Has anyone else added soundproofing to a Madeira or Elysian? What I was thinking of doing is putting a sheet under each of the two hatches that run down the centre of the cockpit directly over the engine and then boxing the sides of the engine in with more sheets. That way I could cut down on the amount it would take to cover the entire area. I'm guessing this would work ok, there is plenty of room around the engine to do this. Obviously the engine needs air, could I run a piece of hose through the soundproofing sheets to the air intake?

GrantS
Hi, I had too much noise coming from the engine bay from mine, mainly due to the original engine being petrol and now it has a Turbo Diesel. I purchased Class O foam from a company that specialise in sound proofing. I explained what i wanted to use it for and they recomended this stuff. Its totally fire retardant (tried to light it with a lighter and it definately don't burn) and is also high density ( which is what you need) I'm pretty sure they supply the marine industry anyway. I purchased two large 25mm thick sheets of it and have managed to cover the removable floor areas over the engine with two layers (50mm total) and the floor areas ajacent to that and have also soundproofed the cavity above / behind the engine. I still have a fair bit left over and i have to say, it has worked wonders. The noise level has reduced significantly (and all for approx £50 which included a £10 delivery charge.) If you are interested, i will dig the receipt out and can then tell you the company name and what size sheets i went for. (although, its bought by the metre, so you choose how much) Let me know...... ktown
I know exactly how you feel Cattleya. It's like conversation is totally out of the question, ha! 200-2500 RPM is definitely the threshold of no more talking. So what techniques did you use to soundproof the engine bay? I have been researching for a while. I did some research on this a couple months ago but never went through with it. One place that I remember that has the kind of sound blankets that I think may work are at that site. Would a blanket be able to go near the engine like that? I don't really know where to start. ktown
Also, how did the foam work for you?
