ExMemberBobdog
Anybody know what it is, and where it can be found?
littlesprite
It looks like a mortar post, during the last war there were lots of these positioned for defence in case of invasion. The mortar would be portable (2 men required to carry it) and could be moved from one post to another as required, don't know were it is but there are loads still around in this area.
littlesprite
Looking at the picture again the pivot pin might be to small, difficult to gauge size in the photo.
Guest
No, you're quite right Martin. It is a "Spigot Mortar" base, to be used by the Home Guard in WW2. There's at least one at Ludham Bridge. I think there's something about them on Nigel Pope's Ludham Archive website.

ExMemberBobdog
This one is beside the 'boat waste' dustbin compound (see the wicker fence), tucked away behind the bridge pilots' shed at Potter Heigham. A lot of them were based near bridges with the intention of defending the river crossings.
