Guest
It's surprising how fast kayaks go even with the smallest of conventional outboard motors. Here's a standard sit-on-top kayak with a tiny 2.5 hp outboard that cruises comfortably at 9mph at 3/4 throttle. There's other youtube vids with slightly larger outboards going much faster, but they tend to sit tail down and don't plane smoothly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNRqy6EG7UE
SPEEDTRIPLE
Yes, i`ve seen some of them. It`s amazing how ingenious people can be. I remember a couple of years or so back watching Top Gear where Richard Hammond was in Iceland (i think?) and he was racing some really extravagant off roader against a kayak with a jetski engine in it. That thing went like a missle, and won the race too. I`ve also seen one where a guy has built a canoe with a small electric (Minkota) outboard, which just potters around very peacefully, which in all honesty, i think i would prefer, and feel a bit safer in. My choice too Neil. I have a very stable sit on top kayak which I've adapted for sail and outboard power. I use a tiny Rhino Cobold electric outboard that weighs only about 5 lbs but pushes it along at an easy 4mph. I switched from lead acid batteries to a home made lithium poly battery pack, and now get about 3 hours range from around 10lbs of batteries. It makes canoe propulsion very practical, no weight handicap, good range and virtually silent. This Torquedo youtube video explains the efficiency of using modern battery technology in canoes, albeit using their much more expensive product. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5EZQVaU63g
