Did They Put The Clock Back?

One of the traditions of Trooping The Colour is that the Queen is timed to leave "Buck House" at exactly the right moment, so that as her coach comes to a stand at the dais on Horseguards, the clock on the Admiralty building chimes eleven o'clock.

They can do this, because the Army marches at exactly 117 beats to the minute, at an exact 30 inch pace. So the Garrison Sergeant Major can measure out the Mall with his "pace stick" and work it out exactly. This year it all happened as usual and the clock chimed at the moment she arrived. But by then she was 4 minutes late!

This, of course, was because she had delayed her departure in order to hold a silence for those killed in the Grenfell Tower.

I thought this year's parade was one of the best ever, made all the more so by the excellent choice of music.

We are still the only country in the World that can put on a show like this, with hundreds of years of tradition behind it.

Absolutely, Vaughan!

With all the dreadful happenings of late one often forgets the wonderful "Pax Britannica" of bygone years.
