  1. Personally I see all tolls as fantastic value.

The engine on the outboard does move it into another class, it enables its use to be a main boat rather than a tender, How many times have you seen family's out for the week with suitcases aboard, must happen all the time in a 2.5-3m dinghy.

They are not really above inflation rises, what everyone is forgetting is that every part of the Broads Authority suffers from inflation. Boats now contribute a far higher percentage of the overall budget than ever before, due to reduced grants for other unrelated projects that still need to be forced through, and as such must pick up their fair share of all the inflation, there is the 2% on admin costs, 2% of broads rangers costs, 2% of dredging non navigable private broads cost etc. Overall if you add all the 2%'s up it could be as much as 18% of which Boats must pay their fair share. 6% is actually a real bargain.

Can we also not forget that we still issue the ever popular non refundable tolls in order to capitalise on anyone who has the audacity to change there boat mid season. Even if the boat they are selling is leaving the Broads and the Boat they are buying is coming from elsewhere the BA will look after the Toll interest by charging the same person 24 months of Tolls for the same year. now that is a 100% increase that will also have 2% inflation and that has not even been added to the inflation rate for the tolls.

I trust everyone now understands why Broads users are getting below inflation rises at 6%

  2. Remember Southwold is not huge, There are limited moorings and you could be expected to raft up to 4 deep if you turn up with lots of boats.

Really good of London Rascal to be volunteered to take this on, sure you will all have a great time.

worth remembering the standard disclaimers and I am sure the web site owners will soon be along to ensure that this is not an official NBN cruise.

Nice to see NBN Salty again,

  3. If my memory serves me correctly when we did it the sea was a bit lumpy. We did get everyone out but being at RNSYC played a big part in that.

If you go out at Yarmouth then once through Haven bridge there is no turning back, if the sea isn't as expected you are either going or stringing yourself up on Town quay. At least from Lowestoft there are a couple of nice safe marinas to run back to. For the more experienced then GY to Lowestoft is hardly one to write home about, just maybe a more convenient method of getting to RNSYC.

There was another forum that did very much the same a couple of years ago, I believe after pilfering the name, apparently they had a fantastic guest speaker for the after dinner speech.

  4. We got everyone together at RNSYC, took all the time pressure off, anyone who had not been off the broads followed those that had through Mutford and Lake Loathing.

Wasn't designed as a cruising club more a familiarisation with the Salty stuff, Saturday night was a blast about and Sunday was supposed to be Southwold run, although I think the weather played a part in that.

For anyone looking to do the same they were fun weekends, no problem with about 8 boats and at the end of it you have your own CIC club.

Would love to help but we are off to Ipswich so not about to sort it out.

  5. Many years ago this very forum had the Salty bottoms, I know I was there. we put together I think 3 beginner tasters to get those that hadn't been through the pier heads used to the sea.  All very informal and own risk type of thing.

I think they were really good days and lead to many gaining the confidence to go off further afield maybe a couple of the more experienced Sea goers would consider the same?

  6. Dreamers Dream will be around till at least Whitsun although after next weekend she will be on sticks on the hard.

Heather is having a back operation on March 16th so the journey from Birmingham to, well anywhere is out for at least 8 weeks, hoping that Whitsun we can drop her back in and although Heather won't do the journey to Ipswich, something she is a little upset about as we were planning to go out through Mutford to say goodbye to the Broads and leave with the image of the Wherry hotel, where we married August 2014, at least once we get to Ipswich it won't be long before she can at least be aboard.

We have lots of happy memories of the Broads but the wedding is definitely up there with that 10lb Bream from Loddon basin:rolleyes:

  7. Thanks Neil, total change, no more piece and quite as we are at Haven in the City Docks. Will miss the Broads and all the friends we have made but then boats are supposed to move and we have really taken root a little with 9 years in one place.

Looking forward to picking up a buoy at pin mill Steve, lovely spot to spend the night.

Restaurants is a little take your pick nowadays in Ipswich Iain with some excellent eateries. they will however make even the most expensive of Broads hostelry's seem good value.

  8. Well that is it, after 9 years on the Broads we are off to pastures new,

we will miss the Broads and also our Marina, having spent 8 years moored at Reedham marina it really has become a second home.

Us leaving means there is a space for a boat upto 45' on the river frontage, a lovely spot with great views of the railway bridge and surrounding fields. Reeddham also gives you the ability to go three ways being at the junction of the Yare and the new cut, you can head for Reedham and on to Norwich, take the new cut to Oulton Broad or Beccles or down towards Breydon Water, Yarmouth and up onto the Northern Broads. There probably isn't  a better positioned marina on the Broads for those that like to cruise.

The marina itself is small and friendly with hosts Keith and Sandra happy to help whenever you need it.

To top it all it is also great value so if anyone is or knows someone looking for a birth you could do a lot worse than to give Keith a ring on

    07901 652 029 or 01603 714 044 tell him Ian sent you

  9. Horses for courses I suppose but despite spending far to much of our disposable income on buying and running the boat for me the real beauty of owning a boat is having all your own stuff on board at all times.

It really is a case of the suns out lets go boating, I know it's rare but if it is persisting it down of rain I can think of better things to be doing than boating, well maybe  not but it is preferable to do the other chores that life throws at you when it is raining and boat when the weather is good.

I even looked into beds on boats as a means of paying for the upkeep but soon dismissed it when I realised I could no longer leave everything on board.

I guess while we can scrape together the pennies we will enjoy our boat, when we can't I'm sure something new will come along.

  10. I find it better to only count the cost until you get within touching distance of what you can afford and then just assume that you have only spent the balance of your budget over the rest of the term.

We start counting in January and finish in March, fairly sure we can get through the rest of the year on £20.

Did Start keeping a spread sheet one year, stopped when I reached the national debt of a small country.

  11. Sea boats do become limiting on the Broads where in the end you are forced to choose one or the other.

We have done 10 years of Dual use boating but the restrictions imposed by the Broads Bridges, the poor quality of Broads infrastructure, resulting in Bridges that don't open, locks that don't work etc. and the attitude of the BA Executive, coupled with the fact that at least for motor boats there is not that much within economical range of the Broads entrances to visit, has finally resulted in us making a choice between the two. It was good while it lasted but I would agree that if you want to do both you need two boats.

they're not bidding, they have the contract already. The Chinese will build it, the French are paying for it. Ever wonder why this country is stuffed

They should have started but unfortunately I heard there is a major flaw in the reactor model. One thing a dodgy webasto but a nuclear reactor that doesn't work is a little bit more frightening.

gets worse though. The U.K. Has a nuclear waste storage facility that is capable of making fuel rods out of the waste. The rods can only be used by certain type reactors but would it not be sensible for the uk to put these in and kill two birds with one stone? Use up the stored waste and provide energy in the process but the UK gov allow the country they spend the most effort keeping secrets from to build the most dangerous thing in the country

That said if the quality control is done right, the Chinese goods can be as good as if not better than other goods.

That is pretty much the problem. If you want to buy thousands and are prepared to spec it and put a team in China to look after the QC then fine. If you are buying a one off from alibaba then good luck to you.

If you do fit the heater can I suggest you also fit some fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors from a decent brand. They may be made in China but at least they will have at least some QC on them

I'm sold on them. We looked very closely at a few for a number of boats. I'd do one the only things that put me off was the alternators on the small ones look cheap bespoke ones but we didn't get any further (Probably just make sure you can get a local alternative from a motor factor).

Have a chat to lancing marine before you go for a Chinese engine. Maybe ok on the Broads as you can swim to the bank.

lancing had a great reputation for marinising ford units, from what I understand when the company was sold the new management were under the misguided dilusion  that Chinese engines would do the job just as well.

Shame about the reputation but if you have a dig around YBW it will give you something to think about

  15. Timber products from China are no where near European, Scandinavian or American standards, this despite having the same structural grades stamped on them. Plywood from China is rubbish, try using Chinese marine ply and see what happens when you get it wet.

Japan used to do exactly the same, they copied Brands but they made it cheaper, sure the first few years they fell apart or rusted away but they were cheap. Once they embraced the fact that the products needed to perform as well they jumped forward in leaps and bounds.

I'm sure a few Chinese companies are now at that stage but the vast majority aren't.

Chinese Outboards, read the side by side reviews. at least 20% down on performance per HP over leading brands and getting parts for older stuff is near to impossible. I'm sure it has and will continue to improve but at what point does the performance become acceptable to you.

As far as a heater, Webasto and eberspatcher hardly have a name for fantastic reliability, could the Chinese copies be any worse? well it is a copy of something that is not that good in the first place.

  16. From personal experience, if left to their own devices the Chinese normally have scant regard for any product safety, especially when copying something cheaply.

Good products do come from china but usually designed in the west and produced under the QC of a western company.

Yes they can make everything cheaply but not only do they pay very little to their workforce, they also pay very little to the workforce building factory's and production machinery. It is cheap to employ people and cheap to set up.

Would I trust something as critical as a heater? think I will give that one a miss.

I know it's been hammered out before but it amazes me that a government will allow you to buy fags and then tell you that you can't smoke them in public places OR in your own private car if you have someone under 18 yrs old in it.

Along the same lines Tesco's sell Durex, that didn't end well either.

  18. The problem with absolute measures is there is no alternative than to have an absolute line. If that line for instance was for a 24 hour mooring was say 3 hours after the 24 hrs than it becomes a 27 hour mooring. if the speed limit can be exceeded by 10% before the fine is triggered then the speed limit becomes 6.6 mph, if you allow 1 month of grace on the toll payment then the tolls are due on May 1st.
