  1. I remember seeing my dad dancing around on the bank with an eel attached to his finger. I think I must have been in trouble because I was definitely on the eel's side at the time! :)

  2. I don't know about common sense. If you are a regular boater, there are things that are plain and obvious to you..common sense if you like... but are actually learned behaviours.

Modern cruisers with their microwaves, telly, and ensuites look and feel more safe and domestic than different and boat-like. Everything works at a button press and if you are not mooring up, (that is challenging to beginners) life seems easy. My point is that some people may be lulled into a false sense of security and relax their vigilance? The Wear It campaign does seem to be working though, there are lots more LJs in evidence than there were.

  3. Definitely my sight of the summer is this. We were pottering along the Bure, as you do, when I did a double take! We were just passing a bittern, coolly hanging out in the reeds. S/he was not bothered by a boat less than three feet away, but we were astonished! The picture below was one I took as we circled back cautiously for a second look, so were on the opposite side of the river.

Note to self: do a Jenny Morgan and keep the camera handy!

  4. I so agree the awareness of what can happen just isn't there, I fear. I do think that if the adults set the example, wearing theirs, then the children will accept that that is what happens afloat. Top marks to the boatyards that now supply the slimline lifejackets instead of the orange horrors.

  5. We also have a harness and long lead, attached to the boat it seems to work better for Cleo, but I would prefer her to get used to her lifejacket.

As it is, she spends our sailing time in the bilges with the wine, (it's clean and dry in there and has a cat sized porthole) , as she dislikes the overhead movements on deck and thinks the mast creaks are out to get her.

Needless to say, she only comes on the boat when we are not planning much sailing...she loves it then! :)

  6. Very upsetting, glad it turned out well. People don't realise how hard it is to recover from the water to a cruiser. I watched swimmers last week on Black Horse. They were jumping from the top of a big HW cruiser and complaining about how far their legs were sinking into the mud.

One chap was very lucky they had an inflatable canoe, because he failed to get into the dinghy and looked pretty whacked when he did get out.

I was watching to see if we needed to scramble our dinghy and heard a lady aboard complaining that I was looking across at them. Oh well! :)
