    Up North

I recall coming from the North and finding the biggest problem was the flow of the Bure going past the Yacht station. Gave me the heeby-jeebies It's been a while since I did it, but I would be inclined to err on the side of arriving a little later when coming from the northerly direction. I'm sort of inclined to err a bit on the side of arriving a bit later when going the other way too, though it probably isn't as bad. I might be wrong of course.

Obviously the helmsman or woman deferred to conditions and was cosy inside. Can't say I blame them at all We were up on our another nice boat we have a share in last week and it was pretty chilly.

We see Thunder every now and again when we're up. Nice pair of boats . Yes, we'll maybe meet up at some point in our travels

Good call re Womack, Alan and vanessan. I had forgotten all about it. I recall it being lovely indeed Alan, I will definitely get to South Walsham as well. Also recall that being extremely nice place to stay. Hi Matt we will be on Lightning so maybe say hi to you at Reedham if you're there. Will keep a look out for you anyway. If I've made a mistake in the tide tables then so much the better. Gives me a bit of a kip on the Sunday morning EDIT. Yes it looks like my reading of the tables were wrong. Just considering that if we don't need to leave so early we might stay at Loddon or somewhere else on Saturday night Thanks folks.

    Up North

Hi everyone. We have a week on the Broads planned for the week of 28th May ( this is half term week ) and we intend making the trip to the North. We haven't done this for around 10 years so are a bit rusty and looking for advice. We will be leaving from Brundall. I notice the low tide at Yarmouth is about 8.43 am on the Sunday and so we intend to stay at Reedham the Saturday night and leave there about 7.45am. This should get us at Yarmouth around 30 mins after slack water ( ie 1.5 hours after low tide ) I reckon we should be at Acle around 11am all being well. After that we're not sure. I was considering up to Stalham and mooring somewhere off Barton Broad. The name of the place escapes me. We might then potter around there before cruising up to Wroxham or Horning and maybe meandering down to Ranworth on the way back before returning to Brundall later in the week. Do you have any suggestions as to places in addition to my suggestions above? Are the Northern broads likely to be very busy at this time of year? I had thought that despite it being half-term with it being early in the season and before fishing starts it might be quieter. As I say it's been about 10 years since I was last up there though so if I'm wrong let me know. Any recommendations or advice gratefully received.
  7. I wonder if she is the same person, JM? Surely there can't be too many artists with attitude on the Broads?
  8. Well we had a lovely day cruising up the Yare. Went down to Rockland St Mary and thought of mooring there. While we were considering, a woman came up and told my wife we had to move off because there were people painting! First time I've had this I must say Anyway, I was minded to moor there just for that reason but my better half decided we should move on as we weren't that bothered anyway. We went and left her to it. Hope she didn't cut her ear off or anything After our brush with artistic temperament, we had a pleasant journey up to Bramerton via Salhurst and stopped for a cup of tea and peace and quiet. Lovely stuff. My wife took the opportunity to tell me I've been spelling it wrong all this time - with 2 "m"s. Ah well, it's these things that keep spouses content. Now we're back at the boatyard in Brundall. I will confess that I struggled a wee bit against the wind and it took a few attempts with a fair bit of rope work by the missus to get us in, but we moored without incident and that was the main thing I suppose. Just hope no one had a video going Anyway, all is quiet here so probably a better bet then NYS. I will drive to Norwich tonight. Less hassle than waiting for transport and as I won't be on the sauce, no problems there. Thanks again everyone.
  9. Thanks folks. The tides, and the uncertainty of security at the NYS and all the rest puts me off it a fair bit. We'll probably get the train or drive from Brundall. ] We're also now wondering if, given the current weather, which is unlikely to change for the foreseeable, we might spend the day in Norwich. If we do then we will probably get up their early this morning and return around 10pm either by car or train form Brundall. Thank you all again :)
  10. Well I'm very grateful to everyone. Thanks. Do you know, I hadn't actually thought of the railway. That's a good idea and what we will probably do. Thanks again folks
  11. Thanks for the suggestions. I'm more inclined to look at some of the other options. Glad I found out though before going there. I might well just moor at the boatyard in Brundall and drive to Norwich. Thanks for all the good information and tips folks
  12. Apparently the YS is closed for the winter now. I will look to moor elsewhere. Thanks for drawing that to my attention. It saved us a bit of a wasted journey
  13. I'll call the NYS to make sure later. I'm off to work now but thanks for helping :)
  14. Wow. Good call Bobdog. That'll change things then. Time for plan B which I haven't formulated yet I know there's a cut below Norwich where you can get a bus into town easily but I also recall there being problems with people cutting ropes etc there. ( What's up with folk ????)
  15. Thank you both for your very speedy and helpful replies We will probably stay Thursday night there so hopefully avoiding the crowds. I plan to meet some friends in Norwich that night and doubt it will be a late night bash so we should be back well before midnight
  16. Hi all. We're off to the Broads for a bit this week. Sadly we won't have much time ( work gets in the way of so many things! ) but we hoped to spend one night in Norwich and I wondered if the yacht station there is now considered safe. It's a place I've never been but reading a few posts here and there it seems it has had a reputation for not being secure. I believe this has changed in recent times though but just would like some confirmation before we risk leaving the boat unattended while we paint the town red. Thanks
  17. Continuing my search, I've found a Craghoppers Kiwi jacket which looks pretty good. It's a sombre colour which will also help with my other interest, birdwatching. I would be reluctant to be down the Kent Marshes with something a bit more outré Any views on this jacket? Our recent weather has made me quite like the idea of having the hood.
  18. We're in Kent, too, and as said it's been persisting down. It's prompted me to renew my search for a waterproof jacket. I mean to say, August? It isn't looking like a glorious Bank Holiday either. We were really lucky with our weather on the broads from 8 - 15th August. One morning and night of rain and the rest was really beautiful.
  19. Thanks. I will have a look. There's one near to where I live. I'm inclining to the layers option so maybe the Musto snug isn't the best option for me, good jacket thought it seems to be. I'm not sure about getting the use in the warmer months. Considering all the advice and re-appraising what I have, I reckon I can make do with the fleece I have combined with some thermal underwear so I'll look for either a golfing jacket or some other waterproof outer.
  20. Hi all. Great suggestions. Thanks to all of you. The Ski gear looks interesting. I will also look at the military gear - quite fancy wearing Gucci . Would I get these at any army surplus site?
  21. Thanks, Grendel I try not to buy clothing online so will investigate the golfing shops for suitable kit. Hi John, hope the jacket works for you
  22. Thanks Iain. Might be what I'm looking for. Do you mean something like this? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mizuno-Thermal-Fleece-Windproof-Jacket-Small/dp/B00FHAVW64/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1440542868&sr=8-9&keywords=thermal+golf+jackets I'm not a golfer so never thought of that, but I guess it would make sense for general wear and while boating.
  23. Hi all. Not really a "Broads related" query but I thought all you hardy sailors might know a thing or two about keeping warm and dry. I'm looking for a jacket to do me through the winter. Every now and again I get the urge, have a look around and end up buying nothing. I have an old fishing jacket which is waterproof, very warm with he inner fleece but suffers from condensation. Mobility isn't great, it's heavy, and if I fell in the water with it on it would not be good I have a waterproof outer jacket which I wear over a fleece in colder months but the fleece isn't terribly warm and has seen better days - I bought it about 16 years ago! ) I quite fancy a good all rounder which is warm, comfy, showerproof and windproof. Warm and comfy are the main requirements here. I'm flexible on budget. Cheap is good but as it seems I only buy one every 16 years I would be willing to splash the cash. Any suggestions?
  24. I reckon it also had to do with being up and about all day rather than sitting at a desk or in a car I'm hoping that as I lose weight, I can get more active again
  25. I'm happy to report I lost 2lb while in Norfolk last week despite substantial meals at Acle Bridge, the Swan at Loddon, and the New Inn at Rockland. Mind you I was pretty hungry for much of the time
