  1. Thank you all for your help. I'm glad to have the facility for oil removal built - in to the engine. I've been reading books and as I say, watching videos but currently the boat is in the hands of an engineer who's going to give her the once-over and have a look at coolant pressure for me. Thank you re the oil tip for the gearbox. It is indeed a Hurth, according to the survey and I will bear in mind the oil type. Of all the things I've read about it seems the one likely to be the most tricky is bleeding the engine after changing the fuel filters and also getting the impellers in and out ( I have arthritic and feeble hands ) otherwise it looks quite fun. Thanks again
  2. Hi all, I am retiring this year and I've recently bought a boat. For the first time ever I've actually started reading up about how diesel engines work. It looks easy on paper or on youtube when some guy on a plush yacht is changing parts etc but when I look at my BMC 1800s it all looks different. I can hardly reach some of the parts I can actually identify! I need to buy some tools and if you know of a good kit to cover most basic tasks I'd welcome your recommendations. Meantime, to show I'm really ignorant of engines, please can someone tell me what this thing is? Thanks for your advice
  3. Hi Alan. Yes the guy is a marine electrician and also a qualified surveyor. He actually did the survey for me and suggested some work to be done so he’s pretty experienced. he said the wiring was good but e could install an automatic floating bilge switch and could do with more sockets etc
  4. Thank you for your advice. As I’m pretty clueless about all this I’m having an electrician review my wiring etc soon so I will ask him to install some decent circuits
  5. Thank you. Looks like there would still be some spare capacity after TV and aerial are plugged in using a splitter and I'm guessing phone charging on the other socket won't take up much more. I'm unlikely to plug anything else in at the same time but I was considering using a 12V extension cable on one of the sockets. Would this make the draw more?
  6. Hi I'm completely in the dark about electrics ( and most engineering stuff too ! ) and I'm wondering how much power I could draw from the 12V supply on my boat. I will have a 12V TV and probably another powered signal booster for the aerial plugged into this. I have two 12V cig lighter type sockets so should I use a splitter to give me two plugs from one socket or would it be better to use each one for a single item or does it make no difference? I'm guessing phone/tablet charging etc is nothing for the power draw but if I add in lighting, TV, aerial, to the phone am I getting near to the limit of how much power I can draw ? Thanks for your patience
  7. It is sitting in my garage now. I wish we could have people over for dinner so that when they ask to use the facilities ......
  8. Good advice all round. I will put the ad in and await results
  9. Thank you. This seems to be well-regarded and I will investigate. Does anyone know if running the (12V) TV with that aerial would be much of a drain on the domestic battery?
  10. Hmmm. Looking on ebay they seem to be going for around £45 or so used. Well in that case, ebay is getting it
  11. Freecycle is about to get it. I can't be bothered with the hassle of ebay these days and it's hardly worth a fortune.
  12. HI all, I am on the look out for one of these and found a thread from 2017 here which said there was one which worked well but unfortunately the links are now defunct. Anyone know which aerial @Deebee29 bought and found useful?
  13. Thank you again. The PP is now at home in the garage. It was empty and as our marina doesn't allow disposal down their toilets, we're unlikely to use it so I will see if our binmen will take it or else a trip to the dump is in order.
  14. Thank you ask for your ideas and advice. I'm pretty sure it's in clean condition a they say and I'm really not sure why they had it a on board as there is a pump out toilet. I was going to such it in the boot and take it home but was wary of spillage just in case. I had a look at the Green Book online but no sites near to me. I'm wondering if the public toilets nearby woukd allow me to empty there
  15. Hi all, I have recently bought a boat which came with one of the above as an added extra. I don't want it and am not sure how to dispose of it. I'm not even sure if it has chemicals in it and I don't know anything about these things. I just want to get it out of the way. I'm mooring in Brundall. Does anyone know where i can empty any fluid left in it and then perhaps dispose of the actual potti itself? Thanks
  16. Another vote for the Merchants of Spice in Thorpe. We go whenever we visit Norfolk and I honestly haven't found a better Indian restaurant in the UK. The food is amazing and the staff are very friendly. Can't recommend it enough.

Interesting pictures in my mind of getting thrown off the broads. How does that work? Edit: No. Don't explain I get what you mean. Just a wonderful picture. I always feel boating holidays seem to highlight the best and worst of people. Some folks' natural consideration, generosity and kindness shines out, whereas others' natural selfishness and unpleasantness comes out. I'd say 86% of people are pretty decent, tolerate the foibles of others and have their own foibles tolerated. They also realise the world isn't their playground and that it's only decent to respect the wishes of others and not behave like mindless yobs. All in all, that's not too bad a percentage. Mind you, I'm in an optimistic mood this evening
  18. Yes I might go with the idea of having s inferring simple made up and fitted. The othere idea was one of these fabric type things. I guess my point about the closing pontoons was that the height of the boat compared to the ground starting point would always be the same so it wouldn't matter about the tide and if not mane things more difficult however they'd be the same for any boat because you'd mainly board by stepping onto the side anyway. It's just the same for all boats using these pontoons.
  19. I realise I'm talking mince because the walkways at the sides of the boat would be where you would stand wherever wouldn't they? Too dopey today. So the Centre Cockpit would make no difference. Still wondering about the ladders though
  20. Thank you all for your advice. Truly, I'm seriously considering a little light aluminium or similar ladder that hooks or attaches over the side in case one of us goes for a swim and can't get in otherwise. It would also solve some of the more extreme situations noted above. What say you wise men and women of the forum? Something like this https://www.gaelforcemarine.co.uk/en/GB/Trem-Delta-Boat-Boarding-Ladder---18cm-Top-Bend---4-Step/s-3566-8671.aspx?PartnerID=618&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=UnitedKingdom&gclid=Cj0KCQjwsLWDBhCmARIsAPSL3_1FYFy8c30BYpuKQh1VJCXRnc4G9b1c8SERaDwymZCZjnuh_PTzTykaAgaLEALw_wcB
  21. Fair enough. Seems I was off beam. I might consider getting a small safety ladder though as I 'm no spring chicken and the missus isn't very niimble either
  22. I thought that as you were standing level with the water on a floating pontoon rather than higher ( as on a bank ) it might make the height into the boat pretty high compared with an aft cockpit, the height of which is a few feet lower.
  23. Hi all Not sure how technical this is ( probably not at all - sorry ) but i didn't know where else to put it. Anyway, I'm just in the process of buying a centre cockpit Elysian and talking to someone, a thought occurred to me. On a floating pontoon is it going to be tricky to get inside? Do I need to buy a ladder to stick on the side. Should I be looking for a side mooring or even a finger ? Am I making up something to worry about? Thank you for answering such simple and ignorant questions. All good wishes wooster
  24. Thank you for the clarification and the advice. Yes it was Horning Pleasurecraft I meant. Anyway, it seems both Richardson's in Stalham and Horning Pleasurecraft are full so not options for me.
