  1. To ALL at the NBN from him who is stuck in the Middle East (my choice) and wishes he was in Norfolk.

2014 was a year where my personal finances improved and together with my family, we were able to return to my love of boating on the Broads. When we came back from our first trip on Fair Monarch to Riyadh in April, I was having withdrawal symptoms and I eventually found this Forum. It has kept me sane between trips and I now feel I can at least talk to people who are the same as me and long may it continue. I read, I post, I press the like button and I feel like part of the family.

Anyway, the year is almost over and I would like to quote a verse from the famous Scottish song of Auld Lang Syne.

AND THERE’S A HAND MY TRUSTY FIERE

    AND GIE’S A HAND O THINE

    WE’LL TAKE A RIGHT GUID WILLE-WAUGHT

    FOR AULD LANG SYNE

My personal translation of this verse is:

What has been is gone and let’s shake hands and drink to it.

    It’s now 12 o’clock here – so – HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

ALL THE BEST FOR THE COMING YEAR AND MAY YOUR WISHES BE GRANTED.

  2. Greetings from Riyadh. We were going to a party at the French Embassy tonight, but due to a berievement in a friend;s family, we are just having a quiet dinner at home with a glass or 2 of my home made wine. I'll be thinking of you all around 9 o'clock here 'cause we're 3 hours in front of you.

As Iain says - there is no HNY until after 12, so have a nice evening. I will say my piece later.

  3. Hi John,

I used to be part of the Lightning service team here in Saudi in the 70s. A quick tale for you (sorry to go off topic), lightning and F5 together at the end of the runway. F5 lets the brakes off and goes max power and max climb. When the F5 was at 10,000ft, the lightning let out a roar and went max power and max climb.

When the F5 was at 20,000ft - the lightning was at 30,000ft.

  4. Iain,

Looks good, but very complicated. I do it the way my mum does it -

3 pounds of potatoes peeled and cut into bite size pieces.

2 decent sized onions peeled and cut up, but not too small

1 tin of corned beef and a handfull of minced beef (if you have it)

6 sausages cut into bite size pieces.

Put in a big pot and cover with water.

Add salt and 3 oxo cubes.

Cook until potatoes are soft - 20/25 mins.

Lovely with some bread to dunk the juice.

  5. Looks good and my mouth is dripping out of both sides. As soon as my kid's school sorts out their holidays after the summer 2015 break, I will hope to book it for a week. Dreaming now!!!

    Hi All and Clive,

Just got the school calendar last night and the week I wanted was the 25/26 September for a week. Went on the Richo's site to find Commodore and Carousel booked. Will look again for 2016.

PS. Nice to know that bookings are already filling up for you Clive.

  6. Diane and Roy,

Everything here is self generated. There is no sign of Christmas anywhere outside someone's house, including shops, malls and hotels. There may be something in an Embassy or inside a compound, but we'll still enjoy it and have a few of the home-made wines.

  7. From the four of us out here in Riyadh - my wife Day, Chloe, Skye and myself - we wish you and yours a Very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. Maybe we will, if lucky, meet one or two of the members next year.

Note to Jonzo, I still have 2 stickers left for the boat in March.

  8. Dave and All,

When the boat builders mould in these little "flat" spaces next to the helm, it's not for tissue boxes. That's where you put youe coffee or tea in the morning and your tipple in the afternoon and evening. I cannot imagine going along the rivers on an extended cruise (maybe north to south or vice versa) without a glass of nice stuff beside me. Don't get me wrong, I would never helm a boat when drunk and would be the first to report anyone who was, but holidays are for having something totally different from the norm and relaxing.

It reminds me of a scetch from Dave Allen, who said that 5% of all car (boat) accidents are caused by drunk drivers, which means that 95% of all car (boat) accidents are caused by sober drivers. All the sober drivers should stay moored up and let us dunks helm in peace.  cheersbar  :Sailing

  9. Hi Grace,

I'm lucky in that I don't have to wait until next summer. March 20th and I'll be at Rocho's for Carousel. I'll still have 20 quid in my pocket, but this time I want to see how many beers I can get for that. Roll on.  cheersbar  :Sailing

  10. Good Morning All,

It appears that winter is finally upon us here in Riyadh. We had plenty of rain over the last week (lots of flooding due to the lack of storm drainage) and last night, I had to change my house a/c from cooling to heating. The temperature outside this morning is a cool 9degC, but it will still get up to around 20-23degC at lunch time. I know it doesn't sound cold to you guys, but it's a big change out here. January sees the coldest temps, which will be around 5degC lower than now, but come March, it all starts to go up again rather quickly.

Where is my wooly hat.  :love  :love

  11. On the Broads is on the Broads. If it's a cheap boat, the peace and tranquility is still good and the moorings are the same. If you're lucky enough to be on an expensive boat, you may have bigger beds, better hot water and a nicer galley, but the rest is just the same. I've been on boats without heating and a BMC engine shaking your bum for every hour cruised. I'm lucky now that I can afford a nice boat and I will continue to do so for as long as it lasts. As for being tight, NAAAAAHHHH, although I installed double glazing so the kids couldn't hear the ice cream van coming.
