  1. It’s the coming back, when they then leap from your boat to the next waiting one, whilst you stand by to quickly grab the helm...

I am happy to take my chances.

But I was worried that guidelines might prevent it. Hopefully not!

  2.

    Wroxham!!!

With hire boats going out from the 4th July, I wonder if the bridge pilots will be operational?

Is it possible with social distancing?

  3. Ok I am still holding my breath... Richardson’s are the only big yard not to have made the announcement that they are opening on the 4th. 🤞

No need to be bothered about that, in the earlier days of lockdown breaking there was local resentment for a number of reasons the main one was fear by older residents. With the official easing things are pretty much accepted and of course where done properly visitors are welcome by businesses and locals ( there will always be the odd one), but largely Norfolk has always been a welcoming place and still is.

    Thats fabulous to hear!!

We are coming from the South West which has even lower infections than East Anglia, but we can't wear a badge saying that...

So much of the Broads infrastructure needs tourism. Hopefully people will see that.

  5. We have no choice, the boat is booked for the 4th.

The upside is we will be the first staying on her.

The downside is I am expecting the rivers and moorings to be very very busy, as the flood gates open!

I am even expecting some hostility from locals who'd rather we stay away.

  6. On a topic more related to the Broads, I was having a chat to the bloke who runs NYA in Horning, and I have just looked at their website!
So much for all those doomsters saying how secondhand prices would fall away rapidly - their stock has diminished rapidly at all levels so someone is spending their pennies!!

Certainly several of the yachts, I had my eye on down here, went straight under offer as soon as the brokers could do viewings again!!

I was still working as a Yacht Broker when we had the 2008 crash (Lehman Bothers collapsed whilst we were in the middle of a Southampton Boat show).

There were plenty of buyers expecting the second hand market to be flooded with cheap boats, ‘fire sales’....

For us that never really happened. Yes purchasers dwindled, but few boats came on the market ‘having’ to be sold. People just kept what they had, rather than moving up the ladder.

  7. BBC breakfast this morning has had fairly extensive coverage on caravan parks re opening.

The main theme seems to be wanting confirmation ASAP that 4th July is going ahead...

Apparently the government has been consulting with the domestic tourism industry’s and has provides draft guidelines, they really need a date now.

That's another good thought Mouldy! Yes I guess we have to 'seize the day' in case we run out of days!

We have decided to do exactly that... lots of talking whilst on lockdown, and we have come to the conclusion that making memories with our children, whist they are young enough to want to spend time with us is the priority.

Soo... we put our name down for a berth in our Yacht Clubs' marina and have decided to buy a yacht, for here in Poole Harbour. Sod it you only live once!

  9. I broadly agree but remember talking in terms of risk as a statistic means actual people's lives. What is acceptable in human terms? If you knew say 200 people, family, friends, colleagues, could you pick one to be the statistic? The one who doesn't make it?

Any loss of life is extremely sad, but a deep and long lasting recession will also cost countless lives.

Poverty, Deprivation, suicides, health care cuts...

It’s is a no win situation, just trying to pick a course through it all.

  10. If people staying on their boats were to fall ill with the virus then do they rush home or go into isolation? Isolation onboard sounds good but if you then really become ill, or simply need to go shopping, then you are putting other folk at risk. Seems a tad selfish to me.

This could be said for other virus’s that we have learnt to accept as risks. I am sure people come down with flu or Norovirus whilst on boats. Do they stay put? or risk transmitting it to others by going home?

If you were at home, you would still need to arrange shopping. You can get grocery’s delivered to boatyards the same way you can at home.

  11. A few things that occur to me are (and my thoughts are just that, not gospel...):

The government knows that big recessions cost lives also.

That a way to help the British economy is to allow domestic tourism to open up. Staycations are worth a lot of money.

That we have to find a away to live with COVID-19. Which means minimising as much risk as possible, but not eliminating it.

I feel they will stick with the July 4th if at all possible.

Teachers weren’t given advance notice about schools opening... so I don’t think there will be a nod or a wink. But the industry has been working towards the 4th.

I am predicting an announcement in a daily briefing by Borris sometime this week though...

I am also a firm believer, that we will ALL tell ourselves what we want to hear... we will bend the facts to suit our needs.

(and on that note I have a boat booked on the 4th July and it could be causing me to over optimistic).

But would they? We have all come across human waste on the river bank where day-boat users have been caught short and doubtless sticky fingers will have touched much of a boat's interior, it's how it is. Perhaps temperature checks before picking up a boat might be an option. Whatever, whilst many won't worry, I would. The obvious requirements for a deep clean will be a handicap for the hire-boat industry, whether for hourly or weekly lets. It will also be a barrier for many potential hirers. No disrespect for the work done by the unsung heroes, the boat cleaners, but perhaps fumigation and or steam cleaning is a way forward. Perhaps even syndicate boats will share this problem, at least to a degree.

Seems that MM & myself both see the problem, therefore it must be a valid concern!

There have been huge problems with human waste being left behind at the beaches after all the crowds go home, the local press here has been full of residents complaining and having to do clear ups. It is really quite mind boggling what disgusting animals some people are.... boats or no boats.
