. . . . . . . . . . . . They would rather see a higher turnover of craft at the mooring and therefore more customers, in exactly the same way as has happened at Ranworth. The charge and the having to leave by 10am or incur a daytime charge has helped increase the turnover of craft and customers at Ranworth. Or at least that is the perception.

What happens next at Horning may not be BA policy, but the local parish wanting to emulate what they perceive to be the success of the BA policy at Ranworth.

The Blessed Authority can attach whatever spin on the perceived improved turnover of craft at Ranworth they like, but from what I saw on Friday 14th July, there were marginally more craft moored there than I’ve seen on a November morning in 2019.  The photo below was taken at 10:45, just after I’d begrudgingly paid my £5 to moor.

To be honest,  there were moorings available until we left sometime after 14:30 and no craft hovering, waiting for someone to leave.  Obviously, it wasn’t ‘peak’ holiday season, but when we were hiring, visiting in the spring or early autumn, getting a space at Ranworth was always a lottery.

Sadly, this may be another mooring lost to the boating community, if the good doctor fails to agree to the likely demands of the local Parish Council and impose time limits or charges for mooring at the Staithe.

  2. It’ll be a bit like Reedham, I guess.  I’ve seen boats going through at what looks to be way in excess of the speed limit, creating virtually no wash going with the current and others punching the tide at low speed, generating a huge wake.

We passed Grendel earlier, doing 5mph in a 6mph zone, going with the ebbing current and creating what I thought was little wash.  I hope we weren’t one of the guilty ones!😬

As any proper tide table should be. Without wishing to confuse too many people, a tide table for a standart port must not be corrected for summer time, or secondary port calculations will be wrong. The summer time hour, whatever the time zone, (I work mostly in CET these days), should be done before adding the hour for summer time.

That may be the case for a general tide table, but the one in question has previously been adjusted to show GMT and BST as appropriate.  I thought it worthwhile to point out the change to save potential confusion.

Sorry, I am late to the party on this, thanks for the update, it looks as though the norfolk-broads.org tide tables have been updated to 2028 now.

But beware.  All times from the beginning of 2024 are GMT, with no seasonal adjustment for BST.

  5. I’ve witnessed mixed groups behaving like animals on day boats, as well as same sex parties.  I think the funniest one was last year when we were heading up The Ant.  What looked like a hen party was ongoing on a dayboat - one of the ones with a cooker and a loo that looks like a small Sheerline.  All of the crew were in or on the bow, including the roof, so much so that the aft was only just in the water, allowing the prop to do its job.  They were having a good time anyway!

Can I ask how much was the diesel at MarineTech?

and is it normal stuff rather than GTL?

it’s so easy to get into that I might start using it more often.

I thought I’d asked when I went there for a pumpout, but can’t remember now if I did or not.

I didn’t check the price before going.  We made a last minute decision to head south from Paddy’s Lane, so rather than go back to Sutton or Stalham, we diverted into South Walsham.

Not sure if it’s GTL, but 26 litres was £45, so about £1.73 per litre.  Not the cheapest, I know, but it saved a bit of time.

Currently aboard Tideway from HPC, our last day tomo :default_icon_cry:

I saw you yesterday as well, although I can’t remember where (it’s an age thing!).  It would have been somewhere between Paddy’s Lane and Somerleyton, so a fair bit of scope!

I think I also may have glimpsed @Troyboy heading up The Bure.  The wife was at the helm, but I did see someone waving frantically from the helm of a 36’ bathtub!

It’ll be a bit less peaceful tomorrow evening when the powerboat racing is underway! 😉

  9. We woke to a grey overcast start to the day at Paddy’s Lane. The original intention was to spend a couple more days on the northern rivers, but a fairly uninspiring weather forecast prompted a spur of the moment decision to head south for the last few days of our holiday.

After a short detour into Marine Tech at South Walsham to top up our diesel, we crossed Breydon and finished up at Somerleyton.

We’ve been rewarded with a wonderful sunset though at the end of a fairly grey day!

Most landlines are being phased out. Business systems are now mainly only internet based. Unless you have a plug in single handset you will lose telephone use in a power cut these days.

At work we kept a single plug in phone for use in power cuts.

Many landlines sit in the corner and are never used now unless it is a nuisance call. We only have one 87 year old friend who rings it now, everyone else phones our mobiles.

The ones who will be penalised are the elderly without internet. Hopefully they are making exceptions for these customers and it is a slow change over scheme.

We have an Internet based home phone and we’ve only given our number to family who may need to contact us.  Since we’ve had it, all we’ve received are ruddy nuisance calls, mostly from some geezer called John with a very foreign accent, trying to convince me that we’re entitled to a free survey and report on out home insulation.  As you can imagine, I’ve yet to succumb to their persuasive techniques!

I suppose it makes a change from the accident I was allegedly involved in within the last five years.

  11. Fairly certain that you were spotted leaving Fleet Dyke this morning.  We left Cockshoot Dyke, having finally moored there yesterday after after looking at Salhouse and deciding it was just too crowded and we’re heading towards Womack Dyke.  We lost sight of you at the junction of The Thurne and The Bure, so assume that you were heading towards Stokesby.

The carvery at The Kings Arms was soooo good last Sunday, we’ve decided to try it again tonight, just to make sure! 😉

Potential for someone to get the hump there!  I can see it now.  Mr Angry from Pratt’s Bottom (that’s in Kent) resented being identified as ‘whatever!’

I used to like the mooring opposite the houseboats just above Wayford Bridge but I'm aware that option is no longer available. The BA moorings are fine but there's not a lot of length there, so are there any other options within walking distance of the Wayford Bridge Hotel?

Don’t think so, Simon.  If you can get under the bridge, why not go to Dilham and The Cross Keys.

The last bank in Wroxham has given notice of closure (1st December 2023).

Not a good move with all the older generation  and holiday makers in the area!

    John

We lost our last bank in Watton in May (also  Barclays) and with it the ATM.  We do have a sub Post Office, but one of the two remaining ATM’s charges £1.90 for a cash withdrawal whilst the other is frequently empty!

Guilty as charged, Kate!  The wife was probably just finishing topping up the water.  The pressure there seemed much better than usual and filling up only took a few minutes instead of most of the morning.

Spotted you passing Cockshoot Dyke yesterday afternoon too.  One day we’ll meet up for a catch up.  We’re currently moored at Ranworth (having reluctantly paid my £5), where Jean (Swan R) has moored next to us in a dayboat with her family on a day out.  Good to have put a face to a name eventually and we’ve had a good chat.

It’s busier here now than when we arrived, but there are still spaces available at 12:25!

Yes, the ill-fated Line Azzuro. They took over Kingfisher Cruisers at Thorpe (at the site which was previously Maidencraft, later Freedom) and for some reason relocated to the old Marina Keys site at Great Yarmouth. They gained a terrible reputation for poorly maintained boats and didn't last long.

Remember them.  Difficult to imagine a worse place to open a hire yard, particularly for a first time hirer, having to deal with a fast ebbing current passing through Yarmouth!

Further to my reporting of various path issues, I’ve only had a response to one so far. To say it wasn’t bad enough to fit the criteria. I now need to ask what the criteria are.

I’m hoping by not hearing about the others, that they’ve been assessed and in the process of being dealt with. I’ll see over the next few weeks. Last year, after reporting at about the same time, (June), by late August the paths had been mown. Better late than never!

I contacted Rockland St Mary Parish Council, to try to find who is responsible for maintaining the path from Short Dyke to the Staithe.  It took two weeks for them to tell me they didn’t know, but would find out and get back to me.  Still waiting.

My wife attempted to walk along the path from Womack Dyke towards the main river this morning and found it impassable.  The path that runs parallel to the moorings is the same.

Norfolk county council, as I suspect many other councils have cut back on maintenance as you say Andrew.
That doesn’t take away their legal obligation to maintain public rights of way, be they roads or footpaths.

Deterring tourists is a very shortsighted policy for the area and the relevant business/tourism groups should be pushing the council too.

Agreed.  For an area so dependent on tourism, discouraging tourists by failing to maintain areas designated for leisure activities is surely counterproductive.  It’s a similar situation to the removal of waste facilities a few years ago.  ‘Let the tourists take their rubbish home with them’ was the theory.  When we’re onboard our boat for two weeks, we do not have the facility to store rubbish up for that long.  Sadly and much to my personal dismay, we find ourselves throwing items that could and should be recycled into general waste for landfill.

Another short sighted and regrettable decision by the local authorities.  No wonder this country is in such a mess! 🤨

  19. Most of the yards we hired from have long since disappeared:

    F B Wilds
    Porter &Haylett (Connoisseur).
    Gale Cruisers, Chedgrave.
    Russell Marine, South Walsham.
    Brister Craft, Hoveton.

Homelessness is indeed a National problem. I don't want to get political, as it’s a situation that seems to have got progressively worse under several governments, but it’s seems incredible to me that we have so much homelessness’s now when it’s was almost unheard of when I was young. And yet, on the whole, we are a more affluent society that we were in the 69s and 70s. Just judging that by the things that most of us take for granted nowadays. My Mum got her first car in 1966 and we didn’t have a phone in our house until about 1972.

But didn’t we have affordable social housing back in the sixties and seventies.  Many folk have made a great deal of money by buying their council house.  Good luck to them, but replacing them with housing associations, who are businesses to make money and private landlords who appear to have ever expanding portfolios of rental properties to let at high prices (yes, I’ve watched Homes Under the Hammer occasionally) is no substitute for affordable social housing.

How are our children and grandchildren going to buy into our crazy housing market, when property values are so high and lenders requiring many thousands of pounds as a deposit before even considering lending a mortgage?  It’s impossible for them to save, whilst paying stupidly high rental prices.

Is it not the fault of all of us, whose desire to own a property has pushed the price of housing up to ridiculous levels?  Why are houses in most of France so much lower than over here?  Why is renting not frowned upon in much of Europe as it is over here?

We have a strange set of values in the UK, where the size of our house is a measure of status.  A big house and a BWW or Mercedes on the drive and you’re well on the way.  Climbing the housing ladder by buying ever bigger properties seems to be the goal of so many, driving the prices up as they go.

One day the bubble will burst, surely.  If there are no first time buyers, the chains will stop.  It needs to happen, so that prices fall and new buyers can get on the ladder.  Either that, or sensibly priced social housing needs to make a comeback.

My opinion obviously, but I strongly believe this to be the case.

I wonder how this compares to other holiday forms like static caravans? We have had more last minute deals from a hotel we use in the Lake District this year, than we have before.

I’ve mentioned that we went to a site in Cornwall (in a static caravan).  It was booked for 2020, but postponed due to the pandemic, so we went in 2021 instead.  We enquired about rebooking for 2022, in the same static, but the price had increased from £550 to £850 for the same dates.  We went to a different, but cheaper site instead.  When we went this year, the price had dropped to less than £500, again for the same van.

It seems that they’ve taken note of both the economic situation and the relaxation of foreign travel restrictions.

I might be wrong, but the costs associated with running a caravan park are probably less than maintaining a fleet of hire boats, but even so, I read that as caravan park in Northampton (Billing Aquadrome) along with their parent company, has gone into administration.
