I've just showed my dad this thread, he was a Mod (can't stop laughing) He got drunk, got into fights, got a few telling's off from the Police, when he met my Mum her parents were mortified, they wanted her to settle down with a proper gentleman not someone from the rough side of the street so to speak. If you met him (he will kill me for this) you will find standing in front of you the most decent, caring, protective, hard working and  decent human being you could ever meet, I adore him, he is my hero

You may be thinking what on earth is she rambling on about now but the point I'm trying to make is even though he was considered a bad penny (or however the saying goes) back then in his younger days he still turned out to be a thoroughly decent human being

Those kids in the day boats were reckless and yes could have put other people in danger, hopefully in a couple of years some of them will think back and wonder what on earth they were doing and some of them maybe not and turn out to be axe murderers or some such

Social media is a wonderful thing in that it brings to the world's attention things that were dealt with or brushed under the carpet back in the day

Now I'm not trying to tell the older generation that they are talking nonsense or anything but give the youth a break, they're not all bad, some of the kids I have met through work and being a parent at the school gates don't stand a chance in hell when you see how they are treated by their parents. I cried when I heard a so called dad tell his child, a little girl to "Shut the f...k up" (I thought he was talking to a dog) I intervened and was verbally abused myself, what chance does that child have?

I am off now to look at photos my Mum has dug out of Dad when he was considered a bit of a thug back then, he was quite the handsome devil but on my goodness, that hair (I think he thought he was Elvis Presley) :default_party0010:

Ah ! Memories, i can relate to all this, my  dear wifes parents were not  too chuffed when I turned up in full biker regalia and sidies like Mungo Jerry  back in '70 on the old Norton.

Got a ford focus now, grim !

  3. Aaarrgghh !!

    More technology ! twoguns

What happened to all the mystery in fishing ? One day somebody will invent a fishing rod that  selects the rig of the month, baits itself up with a smelly boilie,  finds the fish, casts   itself,  strikes and lands the fish without the carp dude even having to wake up. Maybe It could be programmed to suffer the occasional break off  to try to inject  a bit of realism.

It will sell by the million, as everybody will have to have 3 matching camoflage rods of course. Close your eyes and picture the scene on your local  puddle .

  4. Each to their own , but i find carp fishing totally dull and unimaginative. Fishing for a named fish thats been caught before, bite alarms, chemical baits, camo this camo that,  millions of unnecessary rigs, no magic  here  for me  at all. But it keeps the  thousands of carp squaddies off the rivers i suppose ! Give me a river any time ! Still, if it floats your boat........

  5. I've said this before, but the hire yards should stick some rules and regulations in their boats  detailing the penalties for flouting them, but that won't happen.

  6. The old wooden Broads tours boats were lovely, we stayed in a little "cottage" in a boatyard in Wroxham in 1972 when I was 19 ,its long gone now , my girlfriend and I , now my wife , took a trip ( in the best possible sense this time) to Horning and Salhouse broad and it was the start of my incurable Broads addiction.

Its all Broads Tours fault ! cheers

  7. I loved shooting when I was a young man but could never afford game shooting, I was limited to a pigeon shoot at Croxby in Lincolnshire and wildfowling on the Humber estuary.

No Purdeys Bosses or Churchills,, I owned a Savage 5 shot pump ( 30 quid second hand in 1970 ) and an old double hammer 8 bore that I wish I had kept, it would have looked good on the wall !

The  8 was a fine piece of kit, but couldnt get the fuel for it ( Eley Gastights ) when Eley Kynoch rationalised their cartridge range to around 12 and 20 gauge.

Always hated clay shooting with a borrowed Thomas Wild double full choke fowling gun that I couldnt hit anything with ! The guy who ran the clays was Ben Jacobs ( Joseph Nickersons head keeper and loader) he was a bit critical to say the least, The Whiskered old b..... !

    Enjoy your shooting guys !

( Fishing is better though haha )

  8. I'd like to see the Horseshoes pub in Wroxham open again just like it was in the 70's, roses in the garden overlooking the river and complete with dartboard and chicken or scampi basket meals, none of this Masterchef nonsense with twills, pineapple airs, deconstructed pies and stupid prices etc. etc.

Agreed but it is a fact that it is a navigation rather than an angling byelaw.

I have and do troll with an electric outboard outside the Broads area, one hand on my rod and one hand on the outboard, This means that I am in direct contact with my lure and consequently any fish that I hook. When I row & troll I have to lay my rod down and rely on observation rather than feel to indicate a bite, not so good if it's a drop back style take.  No question, in my experience, that trolling with an electric outboard is more fish safe than trolling under oar power. Time to update the byelaw?

I agree that trolling is a perfectly legit and effective way to fish and do it myself on occasions, but dragging a lure from a cruiser going flat out isn't trolling unless you're fishing for billfish in the bahamas. No pike could survive that kind of trauma.

  10. When I was on Hols at Horning a few weeks ago, as usual I spent many hours fishing,  not with great success this year unfortunately .

I was appalled to see on a daily basis various idiots  ( sorry I mean gentlemen and learned scholars of course :naughty: ), sitting on the back of boats usually going flat out  towing lures behind them in the hope of catching a pike. Any pike unlucky enough to be hooked in this fashion would  have to be travelling like a  torpedo in the first place and would certainly die from shock anyway.

It would be a good idea for the boatyards to stick up a bit of prominent A4 stating forbidden  dangerous practices in their hire boats advising these individuals exactly what they can't do, (presuming that they can read in the first place.) I also saw on one occasion, 3 young children sitting on the back of one of the Faircraft boats dangling their feet in the water as the boat motored merrily along. One little slip and they would have been under the screw.

The boatyards could certainly do more to stop this behaviour, no doubt a lot of it is just sheer ignorance to be fair, but the price of a bit of paper these days probably puts the yards off and its too much trouble anyway, the fishing is nothing to do with them. They could even put something in the boat manual, you know, the one that nobody looks at,

These rules should be displayed prominently and it might help to some degree.

On a lighter note for all you pikers out there, I bought a few Daiwa D Popper weedless frog lures from Wroxham Angling, these are the best lures I've ever used, totally weedless, brilliant action, I had loads of takes, the pike were mad for them, only caught jacks but who cares ?

    regards

    Stefan

  11. Not wishing to dwell on old posts but I caught a chinese takeaway from Horning Pleasurecraft basin a few years ago ! I suspect a pair of young lovers had an argument and chucked the bag in.

Just for the record it contained 4 foil containers of water and something awful that could have been a bag of chips !

    You just never know..................:shocked

  12. Thanks Grace !

If I get anything decent I'll try to put a photo on the site but never having done it before I ,may need some help, I'm rubbish

     with technology.

    (I wish I could land a 3lb Perch !) jealous jealous.....,.

4 days to go and counting, God willing we'll all be sat outside the Ferry on Saturday dinner time having a pint and waiting for the property keys.

  13. Not long now to a week at Horning , I've got all the family staying in a property on the main river between the New inn and Ferry, with a "lagoon" at the rear. I'm not one to reduce a good days fishing by counting pounds and ounces, BUT ! I must admit I have never caught a Really big Perch or Pike,( or a Rudd or Roach for that matter ha ha). Had some good Carp I'm ashamed to admit but can't be bothered with that nowadays.

My biggest Bream from Norfolk went around 6 and a half pounds, I'm happy with that.

I would love a decent result this year !

Can anyone please advise how the fishing round that area is at present ? How deep is the river round there? Any good baits ?

Any tips or advice would be very welcome !cheers

£1.25 was an absolute steal. Will have to keep an eye for a copy for my son.

I started fishing under sufferance back around 1973, when my wife to be threatened to kick me into touch unless I sold my shotguns which she hated. Needless to say she won the argument and to satisfy my craving for the great outdoors I bought a cheap 10' fibreglass rod for coarse fishing and a solid glass 8' pike rod, ( as I thought I would easily break the pike record of course,) I also had a landing net , keep net (sorry), and a little Intrepid Prince Regent reel.

That cheap coarse rod was everything I needed for a few years, I also used it regularly for legering. Just to say that you don't need a shedload of stuff to make a success of fishing mate, keep it simple as you can for a while and just learn how to float fish, other styles will develop from that.

Forget Pike unless you can get out with someone experienced and I don't agree with keep nets, unless you're a competition fisherman. Avoid those little fishing "outfits" , get a separate rod and reel.

Oh, and you'll find a pair of small forceps invaluable, they're far better than disgorgers and don't cost much.

I agree with Jenny Morgan about using as small hooks as possible, just wish I could tie a size 20 with hands the size of dinner plates and bad eyesight ! 18's I can just about manage.

Just remember that most of the stuff in the shops is designed to catch the angler, not the fish.See if you can get someone to help you buy.

    Keep us posted !!!!

I used to love going through the catalogues and picking a boat. Then when your booking confirmation arrived, you had the little handbook to go through, which was even more fun. Even ordering groceries to be delivered to the boat was fun. Times are a changing, as they say.

Oh yes ! the little blue book that I used to read over and over again. It was all great.

I notice on dear ol' FaceBook that a yard at Reedham and one other, location unknown, are closing at the end of the 2016 season. How long before we are down to just the big four or five?

Its such a shame, The  character if the Broads has changed dramatically since I started going there around 1970. ( Not all for the worst though, thank goodness) but I used to love wading through the Hoseasons and Blakes boating catalogues on a winters night, choosing from dozens of boats and yards , but sadly no longer.

A bronze bream - thank you.  Never heard of them!

Womack Water this afternoon.  Seemed to fight a lot harder than a silver bream, and the big scales had me fooled!  Biggest thing I've ever hauled out of the Broads (other than shopping trolleys near Yarmouth).

     :trophy

I think that what you're calling silver bream are actually  young Bronze Bream. Silver Bream are pretty rare, all small Bronzies are silver and don't darken up till they've got a couple of pounds on or thereaboutst.

    Nice fish !! well done.

    What's wrong with Lager?:hardhat:

Mind you there were many bad ones back in the day, Marksman. Carling in cans is naff since they changed the brew a few ago and I always regarded Stella as a woman's drink (it used to be somewhat scented).

Becks on draft my preferred brew.

    Regards

    Alan

In spite of being an ale man, I agree that some lagers are fine, cold Kronenburg outside the Ferry on a hot day goes down a treat !cheersbar
