  1. What's the worst beer you've ever had in Norfolk ? For me of a certain age it had to be Norwich Bitter.

This stuff was in a class of its own when it came to vileness.( is that a proper word ? ) But I wonder if any pub down there sells Tetley bitter ? fortunately I've not seen one. A worthy successor to Norwich bitter if there ever was one. yuk

It seems to be popular in Yorkshire for some reason, maybe its cheap..:naughty:

We are soon to loose at least one more quality boatyard and probably a few of a lesser standard, we are loosing our dustbins, moorings are on the decline, tolls & mooring costs are rising, WI-FI cold-spots have become famous and now we are to loose eighteen DAB radio stations:

This is all part of the pleasure of getting older, remembering all the  things that have gone now.

Things like polio, diptheria, rickets, Hitler etc.etc.:naughty:

  4. What's your best scenic view on the Broads ?

For me its a summer sunrise moored at Ranworth Staithe. (If you can get moored !).

Standing outside the boat looking over a misty, still and quiet Malthouse Broad with the missus and a steaming cup of hot coffee.Nobody about, all the boats lined up and silent,  dripping with dew, curtains drawn.:love

Paradise or what !! wish I was there now but Septembers hols will come soon enough.

Yes just seen this myself sad news indeed

We have hired a number of Royalls craft over the years, all were immaculate, you were always made to feel so welcome as well. A better boatyard I have yet to find.

Yes, the sad end of an era.

  6. I thought the programme was a bit superficial too. I suppose that I was really hoping for  an aerial tour of the Norfolk Broads, to see all the places I've visited over the years and some I haven't, but alas, it wasn't to be.

I wish someone would could come up with one.

  9. For all you Anglers out there, the Fish off ( turn off) returns on Thursday on BBC4.

Hosted by professional loudmouth, self styled expert angler  and general irritant Dean Macey and co-hosted by big-fish bore Ali Hamidi,

Guaranteed to be full of high fives, babbling about P.B.'s, gurning, shouting and clomping about, no sane wildlife for miles, there will be no resemblance whatsoever to a quiet misty morning casting a line into a reedy swim on the Bure and of course there will be competition between various "celebraties" that nobody has heard of.

I don't like to appear a moaner all the time but I really loved A passion for Angling with Chris Yates and the Compleat Angler with Geoffery Palmer and Ray Borass, Lovely stuff.

    This dross isn't fishing.

I'm on the fence with the close season nowadays. It used to frustrate me, but now I don't go that often I agree it's a time to do other things and smarten your kit up. I can also recount getting ready for June 16th after 3 months of anticipation only to see spawning fish in the reeds and the first week a bit of a let down - heh ho that's fishing. I would rather they had proper experts who could make a decision based on the many factors that cause fish to spawn to close down lakes, rivers etc while they are at it.

As for commercially run fisheries not having or relying on their fish to breed and provide new blood - I beg to differ. Not all waters maybe, but more than some might think.

I'm not a master or "true" angler whatever that may be and as Andrew points out some traditional angling methods seem barbaric now and I am glad they have been banned. Times change and we all adapt and some will use the new technology to their advantage or to make fishing easier.

I also think you give the carp boys a bit of a bad name - some are absolute knobs and we have all seen them, but because some use technology does it make it wrong? I actually think a lot of thought goes into some carp rigs.It has been mentioned a lot of lakes are very possessive about their fish and how they are handled which again is that wrong? A small fish deserves to be treated just as well as a 40lb Carp so it can maybe grow up to be a Daddy. I would say the carp guys gave us a few very good things we might never have had - un-hooking mats, better un-hooking techniques, knotless landing nets, banning keepnets and an awareness to carry an antiseptic kit to treat damaged fish with before returning them. Some Pike specialists are on the same wavelength, but were a good few years behind.

Never live baited and probably never will, but can see why people do. Seems to me to be a traditional skill for a "true" angler, but one that others may see as barbaric and has been banned in many locations.

I don't really mind it stays or goes, but would like everyone to abide by the rules - and as to the original post - yes they are planks and have never read the fishing licence rules (if they have one).

The carp dudes have also made some amazing changes to English grammar ! what exactly is chod for heavens sake ? have a look at Korda stuff, they can supply Klips, Rig bitz, Toolz, Extendas, Pullas, Strippas, Krimps and a Grinda that looks like an oversized cannabis grinder. I'll pass on that one.

    Fantastic.No wonder kids can't spell.

I caught my biggest carp on a float rod, with a bunch of maggot, no massive carp rod or buzzing bite alarms, it nearly pulled me in though, panic stricken and with my husband calming me down and talking me through, I proudly landed a 13 pounds and seven ounce carp, I strutted around like the queen of carp fishing afterwards lol

    Grace

    Thats great !

You are the queen of carp fishing !

If you're ecstatic with a 14 pounder that's what its all about I watched Gryff Ryffe Jones On Rivers today, a guy fished for one particular carp for 300 nights out of 365 last year and caught a total of 3 fish. But not the one he wanted.

Presumably it was the biggest in the lake.

    Shame really.:naughty:

  12. I think that the close season on rivers should be retained for the sake of ALL the wildlife, and can't understand why canals are exempt. However the thought of spending the close season fishing for carp while sleeping in a tent behind a battery of buzzers, with everything covered in camo  fills me with horror ! on the odd occasion when I fish for carp its with a fly rod or float tackle.

Too many anglers come in to fishing with no watercraft skills and think all you need is a bolt rig, boilie and buzzer to succeed. The present carp culture is appalling to me, if ever there was a branch of angling that tries to solve problems when none exist its carping ! Rig of the month and the big chuck to the other side of the pond, not my scene, man.

Still, the upside is it keeps them off the rivers so more room for me ! :naughty:

  13. Got to be the Horning Ferry for me. We've been coming regularly down to the Broads now for 46 years and the great memories when we visit the Ferry keep flooding back, Its very different inside since the 70's, more's the pity, but its still a great place.

When we went last year the bar staff were really nice, the service impeccable and the food was lovely. Its great sitting outside in the sun on the first Saturday with a pint of Woodfordes, waiting to either get on the boat or in the cottage !cheers

I do not smoke, it seems to me that the Government are allowing a product to be sold but banning people from using it in most places........I wonder why, wouldn't have anything to do with taxes and profits to be made on selling said cigarettes would it?:naughty:

    Grace

I worked in the NHS for 38 years ( no, not a Porter that's what people always ask ). I was led to understand that the tax income derived from smoking was something like 10 times what's actually spent on treating smoking related diseases, and another thing, why are E cigarettes banned from most pubs ? its only water vapour.

Recently commenting on the topic about Richardson;'s and EE got me wondering about how technology can be used on the Broads so felt best to start a separate topic.

What can make the Broads stand out and be more accessible to many visitors is more technology – but useful tech that people will want to use and is feature rich to aid their time on the Broads in many ways.

It would be a bold move; take some money to achieve and need some ‘fresh forward thinkers’ to work at the Broads Authority, but I think could really help the area, wildlife and visitors.

The Broads Authority could have at popular moorings interactive screens these would be work alongside a new App for phones and tablets.  These would, for example feature walks from the moorings and information on what to expect about the wildlife you will see – conservation work and what you can do to assist – a ‘tap to donate’ for example.

As one used the app for walks, it would show the map and the route on it and using GPS would keep you on track, information could then be shown as to where you are like how the marshland is drained perhaps a link Wikipedia about drainage pumps...Simple but powerful stuff.

It could provide tide times for those wanting to travel through Yarmouth, the location of the nearest place to eat and drink - it could provide a direct link to the Broads Authority to report anything from a speeding boat, to an obstruction in the river with an ‘upload photo’ option to assist in the report and in one tap all your location data is shared too so no worry about trying to describe a location.  The possibilities are huge with local organisations being able to add information, advertise and the like too.

Imagine mooring at How Hill and being able to know with a simple tap what the clearance was at Ludham Bridge because a new ‘smart’ senor system had been installed which provided real time digital read out of the height at the bridge, and through the Web provided this data pushed to the App.

Or how about you wanted to cruise to Acle – tap your start point and destination on the map and get a route showing your ETA complete with a real time progress along the route as you cruised.  Should it be calculated that sunset would happen before your arrival the route would be cancelled and alternative mooring locations shown with an explicit warning that would be prominent not to cruise after sunset.

If the moorings were fitted with my ‘smart mooring’ system I’ve previously spoken of, it would be able to displace how many boats where moored and if there was any space.  Naturally it would also provide details of what amenities would be found at the mooring such as electricity (and with my plan WiFi, Water and refuse collection).

Finally as a navigation aid it would show a ‘rolling road’ as a green strip to follow as one went over Breydon Water – should you deviate outside of this and get too close to posts an audible warning would trigger and not stop until the course was corrected thus reducing the risk of going outside the channel posts.

Once all of this would have been impossible or require separate units, now its just code that is needed and existing technology already found in tablets – Google maps, GPS etc.  Ok so sure my idea about having RF readers at moorings to charge for stays and count boats etc along with the bridge height sensor system is a little more complicated but the things exist – it does not need inventing – hell I even built a sensor system in secondary school for people with visual impairments to know when a cup was filled with water so not to overfill – having a system that used the height of the water to the height available under a bridge and linked to the Web is not earth shatteringinly complicated.

No good to me mate !

Wouldn't have a "smart" phone as a gift. Never had an app and probably never will. I'd have to join the ranks of the living dead who walk about stroking their phones for hours on end. No facebook or twitter either for Troutman, he don't tweet .  Don't like self promotion.

These sort of technological ideas would ruin the Broads experience for me.

  17. Ha Ha and maybe after eights to follow ? Seriously though I think you're right about the bait thats chucked in after the end of the days fishing.Wish I'd thought of trying one of those maggot rings  that I used to use on the boring old carp fishing days, you can get a dozen maggots on one of those and use a trace as well !

too late was the cry, sob sob. Only a  year to go before I get back, wish I was rich..

Back to the jolly Louth canal.

    Regards

  18. Are Norfolk Pike becoming a bit particular over their meals ?

The first three days of our holiday were spent trying unsuccesfully to catch pike at Wroxham with a variety of plugs, spoons, drop shotting, static dead baits, wobbled dead baits, trolling, fishing from the bank, from a rowboat, various times of the day, etc. etc. We won't use live baits but don't condemn those that do.After three days of blanking misery we decided to get the coarse gear out and give up Piking as a bad job.

By the end of the week we had around 14 takes from Pike taking single or double maggot on 16 hooks tied to 3lb line ! Result - more misery as one by one they bit through the line, sometimes after 10 or 15 minutes playing them.I though I managed to land one of 11lbs 15ozs hooked in the scissors.Well chuffed with that .

It got so frustrating we even tied size 12 hooks baited with maggots on to wire traces, but these Pike were too crafty for that, not a bite.

:wave Might try maggots cooked three ways with a cranberry jous next year....................
