I have come into this topic some of the way through, only get Sunday's edition. I was really looking forward to going to Sutton Staithe this week after not having been there do 3 or 4 years, Oh Dear!! Very disappointed,it's become a mess. Won't be going there again.

There is plenty of good mooring at Sutton, just no leccy at present. Hopefully the water will be accessible. Definitely nothing to be concerned about there though.
Re the boatyard mooring, I think it may be unavailable at present as some groundwork is being done. You could always telephone to clarify.

  2. Earlier this year, the two electric posts at Hardley Mill were ‘re-wired’ during the night to provide free electric. Maybe the Sutton post has been tampered with in the same way. It’s quite a drastic measure to put the post out of commission if it was just because of the over-stayers.

  3. I don’t think the Whitlingham moorings are shut as such. They are, I believe, under the care of Whitlingham Charitable Trust but are being totally neglected. Liveaboards have moved in and a couple of ‘no mooring’ signs have been attached to the quay heading but it’s questionable as to whether these are ‘legal’ or not. If there is a space available, there is no reason why it should not be used as far as I am aware.

Went past last week and noticed all the mooring signs had the fees painted out. Wonder if the lack of fees has made the enterprise uneconomical.

Are you sure the fee signs had been painted over? They had changed the £5 fee to £6 a while ago and the signs had been changed to reflect this but weren’t very clear. In some cases it did look as though the £5 had been blanked out.

    I’ve had a slight accident

Wouldn’t call that a ‘slight’ accident! Hope you heal quickly and enjoy your holiday, September is still a couple of weeks away so things should be a lot improved by then.

Yes a suggestion ( tongue in cheek).

Get rid of the posh curved cubicle and put a rectangle one in, no curved glass and more room to move.

Really though those curved doors are dangerous, a friends shattered while she was in the shower her feet were shreaded when she got out, no one was in the house, they now have rectangle enclosure!

Why tongue in cheek? It’s a very valid suggestion. However I don’t agree curved doors are dangerous, if they were they wouldn’t be on sale. I prefer a curved cubicle and think they are just as roomy as a rectangular one. Personal preference I suppose.

With tempered glass all it needs is a heat boundary, sunlight hitting only part of the glass can cause differential expansion, which stresses the glass and can cause it to shatter.

So you need to stick the shower door where the sun don't shine.

It already is, bathroom faces north. Any more bright ideas boys? (Subtle or not, doesn’t matter.)

Same thing happened in our house a few years ago, about 5.00am, all in bed. I thought something had fallen off a plane and come through the roof.

Mrs Turnoar had cleaned it the day before, can only put such an explosion down to spongetaneous combustion!

I’d cleaned ours the day before too! The guy at Matki, the shower maker, said that a knock could have done it although the knock wouldn’t have had to be particularly recent.

  9. Strange thing happened this morning. While we were out walking the dogs (and visiting the vet but that’s another story!) our shower door completely disintegrated!

Took ages to clear up all the bits but made me realise how fortunate we are that we have good safety standards in the UK. Imagine if that wasn’t good safety glass! No clue whatsoever as to why/how it happened, luckily the shower is subject to a 10 year guarantee with a year yet to run and a new door is already on order. I’m so glad we were out and not showering!

Do we really think that the Broads these days, is able to offer as much innocent FUN?

That’s a fantastic question and I’m looking forward to the answers! Meanwhile I’ll gather my own thoughts but I am a relative newbie not having started my boating life until the early 80s……..😏

This is why it is better to report to BA with video or photos, they can achieve more than social media.

We had something similar a few years back, some silly helmsman thinking it would be funny to rock the boats moored up. Despite our boat rocking around the clock, I managed to grab a camera and bump off a couple of shots before the guy came completely off the plane. The BA appeared quite quickly after I contacted them and took a statement. It cost the errant helm a hefty fine and, as we didn’t have to attend court, I guess he didn’t contest the charges. So definitely take reg details, keep a camera/phone handy and don’t hesitate to inform the BA

Sounds as though someone may have spilled fishing maggots in the bilges, and now, a few days later, they are hatching out.

I’m pretty sure these flies were from the livestock at Stracey. As I posted earlier, we had the same problem the evening before. We have three farms where we live and summer brings these horrible little flies out in their hundreds (or even thousands!)

The brown butterfly in your picture is a Gatekeeper. In addition to Peacocks there are large numbers of Red Admirals about. Butterfly Conservation did a press release the other day about them!

We walked along Worlingham Wall last week, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many Red Admirals! There certainly does seem to be more butterflies in general this year.

For us since Wednesday evening it's been flies to deal with, I'm wondering if it was the Stracey moorings which started it.

Definitely! We crossed Breydon on Monday and stopped overnight at Stracey. 16 flies were despatched in the morning and many more over the next 24 hours 😠. Nippy little flies too, always seemed to see us coming at them!
We cross Breydon 4/5 times each year and I always use the long stretches to do some cleaning, change bed linen and prepare/cook meals. As well as a share at the helm of course. I’m always thankful when we reach the Waveney, Yare or Bure however as I’m always conscious that ‘things can happen’!

A lady walked past Nyx, exercising 4 dogs, 3 of which were on leads. The fourth she was watching as it peed on my stern mooring line via the post it was tied  to.

Peemails are very important to a dog and need a lot of attention. However, owners who allow their animals to read Peemails in inappropriate places, like on ropes tied to a post, need to be remonstrated with imo. It’s thoughtless and inconsiderate.

As I said above ,,,,,,,   They are the ONLY signs that have been put up ....

Sorry but you’re wrong. I was actually there when a ‘private’ notice was put up on the upstream section of moorings. I was advised that a sign would follow on the downstream section. Maybe you missed those?

Back in September 2018, when Horsey Staithe had to be drained and all the moorings could not be used, pontoons were used with great effect.

Where there’s a will as they say. But of course that’s the problem isn’t it!

  18. Those signs have been there for some time now and they’re frequently ignored or not noticed. It is a pinch point and wide boats moored there can be a problem at busy times. I guess people just see the 24 hour mooring bit on the sign and don’t bother reading any further. So many times I’ve felt like pointing it out to someone moored there but so far I’ve managed to bite my tongue!
