Does anyone know what's happened about those Whitlingham moorings? Are there still there, but under the ownership of the charitable trust that looks after the park, or have they been closed completely?

They are now under the ownership of Whitlingham Charitable Trust. I understand they will be closed from the end of October until Easter 2022.

Bilge pumps do wear out sometimes, with no prior warning

As happened to us a few years back. One evening everything just died but luckily the engine battery was ok. We were moored at Somerleyton and, as luck would have it, a mooring by an electric post was still free so we bagged it quick. After some investigation my husband found the bilge pump was going (quite silently) but not making any connections. We went on up to Beccles and Hipperson’s were brilliant, sorting us out with a new bilge pump within 24 hours. Just shows how easy it is for things to happen.

A 13kg propane gas bottle means there are 13kg of liquid gas in it when charged. An experienced mechanic only has to lift it a bit, to know whether it is full or empty.

I can manage that bit, it’s the how full or how empty I have trouble with!

Are there posts or rings or anything for mooring up anywhere other than the BA moorings?

There are posts although in recent years they have deteriorated. However, part of the moorings has been refurbished so hopefully the rest will follow suit.

I will be interested to see what they do to The New Inn , I didn’t visit during the last incumbents tenure as I was and still am against the addition of a service charge to my bill , I prefer to make that decision for myself.

I wonder how much effect that service charge addition had on the previous incumbent’s business. There were many, many complaints apparently.

Is this a stupid question but don't hire boats have dip sticks these days. Check what's in before and after use?

We were told a while ago that the use of dipsticks is frowned upon these days. I’m sure there will be someone who can verify that.

I must confess the best way I've found of improving the heater fuel economy is to stay in the pub longer. I've even found that the closer you sit to an open fire in a pub, the longer you stay and therefore the less diesel you burn on heating.

I've tried to demonstrate it with the following formula

distance from fire * outside temp = resistance to leave pub.

number of pints / hours spent in pub = hourly pint rate

price of a pint * hourly pint rate - cost of running boat heater = £s per hour

£s per hour * resistance to leave pub = a figure which if high means its time to return to the boat, if low its time to get a round in.

Meanwhile the boat gets colder and colder………….brrrr!

It was advertised at 80k, cheap for a two year old boat.  But, I believe it was all electric, with a combi microwave doubling as an oven.  I think it could be expensive to maintain and reliance on battery power for cooking, restrict its usability unless always moored near electric points.

Still each to their own, I guess, but for me it was too tall, ugly and impractical.

I remember reading a review from someone who had hired it. They found they needed to use shore power too often, couldn’t find free electric posts and ended up going home early I believe!

  9. JP has responded to this on the NBF, I make no apologies for referring to t’other side as this is a subject that looks like there are going to be repercussions. It’s apparently no longer a storm in a teacup. Anyone who cares about the Broads and its governance and future will be following things I’m sure. I have no idea of who’s right or wrong, who’s telling the truth or porkies but, add this issue to that of the How Hill saga and it does seem that there are questions to be answered.

I suppose the one exception would be at the ends of a run of moorings when people moor on the second or third mooring post, rather than going right up to the end.

    You’ve obviously noticed it too!
I think that once settled into a mooring, people either can’t be bothered to move or don’t see why they should if it’s possible to create another boat space. ‘Git gaps’ has become a bit of an affectionate term with some, bit like ‘bathtubs’ :default_norty:

I actually don’t like the term ‘git gaps’ as they’ve not necessarily been left intentionally.

Agreed, but sadly there are too many times when the gaps have been left quite intentionally. One of the most common sights is a boat at the end of a mooring with one or two posts left free, sometimes so the occupants can fish from the bank. At the end of the day (literally!) at busy/peak times, there will be boats looking to moor, we all know that. There are a few selfish people who will ignore the fact that they could shuffle up and make room - it’s a case of ‘I’m alright Jack’. And I’ll add to that, private boats are probably worse than hire boats whose crew may not be as experienced.

Thank you all, it sounds promising.

I knew that there was double mooring on the BA moorings, which may be handy as we will be with friends on two boats. Do you know if you can double moor on the pub or farm moorings?

@vanessanI think “git gaps” may be the best description I have ever heard to describe inconsiderate mooring!

There always used to be signs at the farm moorings asking people to double moor at busy times, I think they’re still there. Not sure about the pub moorings though. Griff or grendel will probably know as I think they visit the Ferry Inn when on their lads week.

  13. There does seem to be quite a turnover at Stokesby, not so much at the BA moorings as they tend to get occupied very quickly and stay that way. As Ray said, it’s a good spot to moor for Breydon so popular in that respect. As with most moorings, there can be a lot of ‘git gaps’ so it might be possible to ask people to move up a bit to make a space.

I haven’t seen a photo. But your description sounds like some strange day boat craft that I think Barnes have been hiring out this year.

I think it’s the one with the yellow lifebelt in. Seems to have some water in it!

No worries - as a 'newby' I found it of interest as it was on their own site. Not wishing to stir up old arguments !

As a newbie I would not expect you to have much knowledge of the saga of the Broads ‘National Park’. There are many threads going back almost into the dark ages, every forum has its quota! Rather sad you got the response you did I think.

If a yards busy Andrew like on a turnaround day, I'm sure they would prioritise there own boats 1st as they are working to a tight timeline. If fact I'm sure a lot of yards actively discourage visiting craft on such days. Barnes use to have signs up to that fact.

Brooms seem to have finally settled their kiosk opening hours as 10.00 - 17.00 daily. The hours used to vary according to whether it was a changeover day or not. This obviously gives them time to get their own hire boats sorted out with pumpouts, water and fuel on return and the quayside is then free for visiting craft. Seems to work ok.
Just a reminder, when we were last there (last month) there was a sign saying card payments only from end of October. That includes a £3 water fill.
