  1. Just checked yep the 2024 tide timetable appears to be online but showing GMT, so the 3 Rivers Race, starts on 1st June 2024, at 11:00 local time with low tide at 14:50 local. I suspect many will go for the lower Bure buoy first.

Yep a place holder for next year,
The race should be, 1st and 2nd June 2024.

My rough calculations ( don't bet your life on it)  say low tide Horning is about 16:00,
So start time at 11:00 is a ball park hour after high tide, that's good for getting every one away.

Well I got that wrong, the online tide tables have been updated they say low water is 14:50.

    Really enjoyed the video!

Is there by any chance a version in which with the speeded up sections are shown at normal speed?

(I know I could slow YouTube just for those parts, but thought I'd ask...)

The video is a compilation of stuff submitted to the guy who runs " Home video transfer" plus his own filming.

Some of the clips are on YouTube or elsewhere posted by the original video taker.

You would have to contact him for a non speeded up version.

A bit of cheating going on at Potter I see. Great video though.

    ?

Due to the nature of the race, from the Herbert woods footbridge, to a sign up river of Heigham new Bridge, paddling, quanting, pushing off the bridge and other methods of human propulsion are allowed in the sailing instructions. What's not allowed is pulling along the bank except to push the boat out again.

The same at Acle bridge, you are especially not allowed to use the tiny embankment under the bridge to pull along from there. Also at Acle you are forbidden to capsize a dinghy to float through without dropping your mast.

Also by tradition the dropping of pre arranged packets of fish and chips to the crew from the nearby chippys is also allowed, though that's less common than it used to be.

Thank you so much for posting the video, absolutely loved it. The skill of the crews is amazing.

I showed my boys and they now want to hire a flappy thingy. My goodness, can you imagine that, I have trouble with a boat that's got an engine :default_biggrin: x

Every year most sailing clubs have a " try sailing day" day, Horning SC https://www.horning-sailing.club/ has one normally in May each year. Often in conjunction with The Horning boat show (May 4th 2024,)

Haversham SC https://www.havershamsc.org/ on the northern edge of MK also has them ( some years ago I was on the committee)

Alternatively Horning Sailing Club has a sailing School. Getting in contact with sailing school could get them out on the water. Due to broads regulations, they can only learn to sail aged 8 or above.

The thing on the Broads further down river (Stokesby, Stracey, Burgh Castle, Polkey Mill etc.) that the tide rising description is accurate, even thought the river flow is still going out. We've sat on Polkey's Mill a few times seeing the boat rise against the quay head whilst the flow is still going down river.

Entirely correct, on one 3 River Race we arrived at the Stracy arms buoy and there was a long line of sailing cruisers tied up as they arrived too early and couldn't fight their way back against the tide.

Some were chucking reeds into the water to see what the water was doing, others were having an instant barbecue on the river bank.

We sailed round the buoy and back up river. To the sound of charcoal sizzling as it hit the river..

Salt water comes up river under the fresh water going out.

  7. Horning sailing club has moorings the other side of the river. The club has two rowing boats for the use of those moored there. ( You could stick an electric outboard on if you wanted) It will be cheaper than commercial moorings even with membership ( membership was £150 for a family last year).

As well as moorings you get, water at the clubhouse, car parking, toilets and showers. A slipway for boats up to about 20 ft. The option to join in social events, on sailing days the Tea bar is open, for bacon rolls etc in the morning, and sandwiches etc at lunch time all a rates cheaper than commercial premises.

This is because there are no paid staff it's run by volunteers. But the kitchens have a 5* rating and is very well run.

  8. Just had the post race meeting, they are going to investigate putting the race matrix online live for next year, and also investigate getting that phone app to track competitors. There may be a trial next year to see if the app works on the broads and to see if people's phones will last the 24 hours plus needed for the race..

Generally good comments all round from spectators, race officials, and competitors.

  9. Woolly Weekend is normally the same weekend each year, I'll try to give more notice next year.

SWMBO now has two table looms. Two floor looms, one nearing finishing it's rebuilding, the other a full size one in kit form needs me to finish the shed for it so I've got somewhere to assemble it. One manual spinning wheel , and an electric I've built for her. But it has motor problems I need to find time to fix once that's done the bobbin brake needs some modifications.  She also has a  warping mill, and various other bits of kit.

I've also built her an Inkle loom, and a bobbin holder , both in the shape of Collies.

Q, in the days of Social Media, wouldn't it be worth finding a person to "live report" the race?

Would it be considered wrong to say which boats had gone left or right at Thurne mouth?

We have enough problems trying to recruit enough duty crew for the race without trying to find another one.

12 guardships x 4 people,, half a dozen start finish, radio and line crew, then the magnificent galley crew for 08:00 on the Saturday through to around 15:00 on the Sunday.

That being said, each boat is recorded as it passes each guardship in the race, I wonder if there's some software that could display  each boats last known position on a map.

  13. Boat just seen drifting towards Acle at Thurne mouth, on being asked their destination they said...

    Horning,

On being told they were going the wrong direction they were somewhat embarrassed
