  1. Hardley Dyke is about mid way between Hardley Cross BA moorings and the Hardley Mill pontoon and, as Smoggy confirms, it can be accessed by vehicle down a quiet out-of-the-way farm track.

Let's consider the size of Barton Turf staithe in the old days :

Isn't the lack of trees in the background of that Barton Turf photo striking.

  3. I came across this delightful vlog this evening. The last time I watched a Broads vlog from this guy was years ago. He did a trip or two with his son, one with his daughter and one with friends, but they were all about 10 years ago or so. Lovely to see families return with the next generation.

  4. There does seem to be a trend going on. When we visited Glasgow a few years back (in February) there were lots of people that just seemed to ignore the rain and were walking about without coats. The past few years I've noticed in March that as soon as we have a bit of sun some people adopt skimpy tops and shorts, despite northerly winds.

Mind you, maybe they have been influenced by our Grendel...

I believe that one of our long-standing operations technicians was out over the winter with a group of new apprentices. He was teaching them/demonstrating to them how to undertake some countryside management tasks. Someone took it upon themselves to take close-up photographs of the staff and become abusive as they felt there were too many members of staff to undertake the task.

That's such a useful thing to know. We tend to forget that people need training.

I'm sorry that the BA staff have to deal with such abusive behaviour. Having worked for a 'public body' early on in my career (pre-privatised British Rail) I got quite a lot of flak from people who just wanted to vent off. They don't see you as an individual, but a representative of the organisation. It doesn't matter if you are just a lowly meagrely paid individual just trying to do your job.

I do wonder, given the current situation and let's face it, friction that exists, if anything can be done to change the perception that is generated.

If I hadn't said anything, I would have developed a poorer and poorer opinion and you would not have had the opportunity to clarify.

MM make a very good point here.

  7. That does seem daft.

By the way, as we were passing Thorpe about a fortnight ago, I noticed they have a shiny new weed cutter. I knew it was new (try saying that) because it still had plastic covering the operators seat. Hopefully, that will be in operation soon.

Dollie’s relocated to share premises with Fizz and Fromage at the small business park opposite the station in Hoveton.

Kate thanks for info about Ken’s veg shed. Must check that out. We also had a senior’s lunch in the King’s Arms last year. Great value for money.

Thanks Jean. So are they still in Wroxham as well as being at Ludham Bridge?

Must try lunch at the Kings Arms. I'm trying to get my head around being considered a 'senior' and to remember that I'm over 60 and have applied for retirement. Somehow my brain has difficulty processing this information.

Phone signal in Loddon has been a bit hit and miss for years, good to see that progress is being made. Plans are also afoot to introduce an alcohol ban at the Staithe with the intention to eliminate antisocial behaviour. I am not sure if the alcohol ban will apply to those of us who enjoy a glass or three on our boats whilst moored there.

Hope not! That would make it an unpopular mooring!

  10. I’ve heard good things about Dollies Bakery, but I fear that locals will stop going out of their way to try to visit them unless they have signs indicating when they will be open…and then are actually open when they say they will be. It’s not in a village, so essentially rely on passing trade. I think they used to be in Wroxham, so the decision to relocate to Ludham Bridge seems an odd business choice. Presumably they had their reasons.

St Catherine’s Church Ludham is a gem. Did you notice the screen that’s above the rood screen? A painting of the crucifixion on one side and Elizabethan (first) heraldic symbols on the other. They were obviously into recycling even in Tudor times.

They say that about kerb appeal of houses as well. I looked those boats up online, a Cobra Futura. Seems you can multiple alternative layouts and designs.

Maybe the height of the boat is deceiving in the picture, but I couldn't help wonder how do you get off the bow to moor up?

There's another odd looking craft moored on the river near Acle Dyke that always has me wondering. I'm not sure whether it's just a super luxury modern houseboat, but if it's meant to move I wonder how you'd get off the bow of that one too. There are steps onto the roof but no gunwales (gunnels) that I could see.

Horstead has some nice allotments too!!!!

I’m not sure what it is about acquiring an allotment, but since we’ve had ours we are always curious to see what other ‘allotmenteers’ are growing.

Graham and I are failing miserably this year. Having the first couple of weeks in May on the boat isn’t exactly conducive to getting an allotment going for the season.

  13. I’ll second Jean’s recommendation, and the need to reserve a table. I visited with my son in January and we counted ourselves fortunate to have got a table. It’s a very popular place and deservedly so. The cake I had was so fresh (though rather sweet…MauriceMynah probably wouldn’t approve).

Is also just a short walk from the Weyford Bridge BA moorings. The garden centre also has an excellent farm shop.

We can't remember what day it was either :default_biggrin:....... or what day it is now ! They all merge into one when you are in the  'Norfolk Time Zone' and you don't have to rush home :default_beerchug:

The thing is, the bliss of ignoring all the days in between and letting time slide but still remembering what day you have to be back home (tricky).

They’re still only tender babies and had spent the previous week sheltering in the car (I didn’t think tomatoes would fit on the boat as well as extra guests over the past weekend)

Wise move…they probably wouldn’t have survived Seren and Pozzick bumbling around your forward well.
