  1. Having lived in Germany between 2003 and 2009 I can honestly say that the German people we met are friendly and approachable and genuinely lovely people.

I’m afraid I don’t feel able to say the same for their political classes at the national level. On the local my neighbour was of a different political stripe to me but we shared many beers whilst he cut his lawn on a Sunday ( illegal) or put out his mums washing on a Sunday ( illegal) or whilst we talked whilst I washed my car on my drive ( illegal), once joined by the chief of the local police too.
they genuinely didn’t care. Pity the national leaders cannot be so magnanimous

  2. Our two eldest have both visited Aushwitz twice, both were immeasurably moved by the absolute cruelty of the place. There is a video at the Holocaust part of the IWM in London from a survivor who was asked if she could forget.
She said in reply that it’s like a pebble being cast into the lake and there is an initial splash and then ripples gradually spread out and lessen over time but after all the ripples have gone and time has passed there is still a pebble on the bottom of the lake.

God forbid we ever forget what was done there.

  3. Justin returned from his first Army Burns night in the Mess at 2am, he left for it at 16:00 hrs. He spent today on the loo.  Gotta love it... He blamed the port (S) which he quaffed, or maybe the haggis, who knows either way he enjoyed it.

  4. Trackmark use has its issues as that’s what Malanka’s wheelhouse roof and decks are covered in. The glue is OLD and it’s not fantastic but when done nicely it looks great. I’m not sure I’d describe Malankas decks as beige more orange brown when new and it does fade but it was a bit phew that’s bright when first laid. 33C96800-1C78-459D-B050-0DBB15280D70.thumb.jpeg.f9a3f1fcefdc7e7c792a1e9d491180cf.jpeg

  5. Having just spent the last 5 years living in Switzerland at 2000ft elevation above the beautiful city of Bern, I can honestly say that whatever this season is supposed to be it's great.

We were used to minus 17 in November through to March snow almost every week and freezing winds and no rain. After moving to Suffolk I equipped the new piece of German engineering with high quality winter tyres as the grip in the snow in CH with the Japanese Engineering was great, the grip here in the low temperature rain was and is simply amazing, I love it.

Tyres stored and rotated every month until I need them and the winter ones the same in the summer.

I had forgotten how mild UK winters were, even for a child of the Northwest. Suffolk is great if a tad wet.

Bring on the spring you're on about Tim I cant wait. Malanka beckons.

See you all soon at the spring meet.

  6. Hello all,

nice to see the staithe naked so to speak. Never seen it before and so it’s now one of those special memories we all keep to ourselves. I have often been resident at Simpson’s watching the various comings and going at the staithe thanking the lord for the relative calm of the boatyard and their merry band of folks.

    see you all soon

  7. OK people, confessions time. I spent a couple of weeks messing about on the old lady. After arriving in the UK in early July I spent three weekends floating.

Had some great times with Bluebell, sorted out all the worlds issues till early doors.

Took some lovely photos. 255B10AA-F9D5-40B0-961C-6F1EC768BF29.thumb.jpeg.854b804701d290bf06e6ae91a02386b3.jpegAll of which came to a crashing halt when I sliced the top of my left index finger clean through. 832CD3C0-835F-466C-A879-26795AB35ED2.thumb.jpeg.d8e7ac5ee10feb4f984a24ef939dae36.jpeg7B5F5B1A-6232-4F69-BFE7-4128F279E921.thumb.jpeg.88d9f2c225465addc1a358ff23283e2d.jpegA8FE8E1A-0176-4D3C-8E40-6893076A1EAA.thumb.jpeg.4aac66010e62238532f4015e44cd45c7.jpegA very kind neighbor saved the tip with some vet nurse compression dressing skills.

Last time we floated was last weekend and we took both Airedale boys.

The weekend before floating we threw ourselves into the local culture and entered an amateur dog show.

  8. Moored in South Walsham out of the breeze on RHS just inside the broad. The water by the trees is inundated with bg algae. Yuchhhhh swathes of it just below the surface , quite horrendous. Moving off to Salhouse shortly.

Oh and please be aware there is a crippled goose ( broken wing) in Ranworth, she is hanging out with the ducks as the geese have pushed her out...the ducks don’t care it seems...

  9. To be quite honest about this, the fisherfolks who manage to annoy the bejeesus out of me each and every time I see them are those that insist that they moor far enough from the end of a mooring to put up several thousand pounds worth of gear. This space repeated down many moorings , Ludham Dyke being a prime example prevents multiple boats mooring up due to the essential fishing space.

In one of our tales I encountered two such boats with humongous amounts of fishing gear between the two boats. Funnily enough they thought they had made the gap too small. They were wrong and the resulting reluctance to move their gear to facilitate mooring ensured a call to broads beat. We weren’t the first to report them and boys in blue caught up with them the next day. Their hire company did not do what the BBC did a few weeks ago and kick them off they just ignored the call stating we can’t ( won’t) do anything.

was a Gem of an experience

  11. Liz, our day last Sunday.

Got up to glorious sunshine in Salhouse.

Ate breakfast of champions, set off up the Ant and saw TWO SWALLOWTAIL flutterbyes

We thought of you and were very chuffed with ourselves.

Back in CH now planning our escape

  12. Week before last the bridge had 7 ft clearance. Last week 6ft5 so I’m not sure what effect the dredging is supposed to have or has had. Air pressure which was 1060mb and rainfall and the state of the north see seem more obvious targets that hauling mud out of Hickling. I agree lower bure would be of more likely benefit as it would ameliorate the effects of North Sea and pressure.

  13. Sorry John I disagree only with the pay peanuts get monkeys bit. The rest is spot on.

Don't forget the going rate got us the current head of natural England. Pest birds anyone ?

  14. Sorry John I disagree a little. Some twonk decided that public service senior posts had to compete with commercial, you know WEALTH GENERATING jobs. I completely disagree with that premise. There are few Senior Quality people from commercial enterprises in public service. Reason,  they can’t or actually won’t afford us. That tells you all you need to know about their desire for quality.

The self aggrandizing few who are head of some public service or other have a vested interest in saying they have to be competitive with wealth generators like the head of GSK or BP, Then they actually on many occasions don’t employ them or anybody under them as they have no experience in public service... !

All I have to say about that is REALLY ?

you couldn’t make this stuff up nobody would believe you.

Chief execs and their rewards are scrutinized by the shareholders, who scrutinizes the same in the public sector? Certainly not the public!!

I don’t care if they pay peanuts get monkeys just get an accountable and talented one.

Not all yards check the mechanicals of their boats between hires. Useful for end of season hiring.
