  1. Thanks for all of the informative responses guys. Looks like we will certainly be heading up the Wensum.

We probably won't stay on the pub mooring overnight as we will most likely be getting a takeaway from the indian up the road so will probably moor on the quayside opposite. Will certainly visit the pub though.

  2. Having only ever been up to Norwich on the hire boats we plan to remedy that this year and take Naughty-Cal up there.

We are interested in seeing the short section of river Wensum beyond the limit of navigation for hire craft.

So my question is I suppose is firstly is it a good idea?

What sort of water depth can we expect?

Air draft we don't think will be a problem as we can drop down to 6'6"

Is there anywhere to moor beyond the yacht station?

    Thanks in advance.

I agree the UK seems to have a more hostile booze culture that likes these mindless acts of vandalism or violance!

As I look from my office window I can see two of these yellow bikes, both vandalised, one hung in a tree and the other strewn across the footpath. It seems Sheffield is not ready for this type of scheme.

A much better scheme is used in Lincoln where the bikes have to be returned to a docking station or the user continues to be charged for the hire. Much more sensible.

  4. We love night time cruising and as others have quite rightly pointed out even on the cloudiest of nights there is no need for lights other then the correct navigation lights. It is surprising just how far you can see with your own night vision alone.

But it does only take one idiot with a spot light aimed in the wrong place to completely ruin your night vision.

The rules regarding the navigation of hire boats at night are there for very good reason.

  5. When we have hired from Barnes we have taken the boats through Wroxham ourselves.

We did have to get them to bring us back through though on drop off day when the bridge height gauge was reading 3 inches less then the stated boat air draft!

It went through just but we did have to walk it through.

Would you move an unattended hire boat a few extra inches to enable you to moor. What about an unattended private boat. How would you feel if someone moved your unattended hire/private boat. Or perhaps a ranger or a BA quay assistant moved your boat.

We have had our boat shifted a few times over the years to make better use of mooring space and if it is moored up again properly and not damaged then there really isn't a problem.

We have also shuffled up other boats where required. Again making sure that they are moored up safely and we have always approached the owners/hirers and told them we have done so if they have been around to tell.

I'm completely with you there and it drives me nuts. Often its not just the last post, its the last 2 or 3. It can be especially annoying on short moorings like Womack Island.

The last two or three are fine for us. We can usually squeeze in that space.

I manage ‘B.A’ through when the pilots gauge states 6ft 5” or more all day long. ‘B.A’ is 6ft4” although I can get her down to 6ft 3” if I take the windscreen off completely ( never had to do that yet) so this time of year with a low tide and high pressure you should be ok. Best ask a pilot to helm for the trip up river then after that - it’s all yours forever. And it’s well worth getting up river of that blasted bridge!

We have been through on the hire boats previously which is why we are so keen to head up with NC.

Might just have to bite the bullet and go for it if it looks promising :default_sailing:

The only way to know what your boat needs for Potter is to have her offered up to establish exactly what she needs,  From the photograph, my concern would be with both the side screens (unless they either fold or are removable) and then the pulpit/side rails which will be your next highest point at the bridge.

The screens do not fold and at £10k a pop for the front curved ones we are keen not to clip the bridge with them !!!

We can wrap the rails at the widest part to stop any damage to them if we knock them. Not so fussed about them.

  10. After several visits to the Broads with Naughty-Cal the only low bridge we have not yet been under is Potter Heigham. We have just never been there when the water levels have been suitable to get her through.

So I want to ask you guys just what are our chances of getting her through this time when we visit?

The air draft is 6'6" to the top of the screens but the arch folded back sticks up a little bit further then this, although we can fold it forwards and gain a few inches if we have too with a little bit of fiddling around. The boat is 8'2" wide with the bow rails being the widest part, these sit a few inches lower then the screens.
