  1. We came several times with mum and dad in late 60s and 70s. Caribbean class boat, Vesta 3, one from Sandersons and a few more. I fell in at Acle Bridge and almost drowned when I was about 10 yr old. Older lady pulled me out and I woke up in my parents cabin. I can remember it clearly even though it was 50 yrs ago. I look at various places on the broads that reminds me of childhood visits.

Troyboy, I was wondering if you were down at all. I’ve seen loads of ‘spanners’ but not yours!
You’ll maybe meet Finlay’s older brother if you keep an eye out for my boat. Liver and white. It’ll be my daughter and husband on board with tiny babe in arms. Or, hopefully not in arms if coming in to moor!

We were down 5 weeks ago Kate but I didn't see you on the river. I'll keep an eye out for Springers Retreat.

  3. An Interesting read. I've always found the public toilets around the broads to be very good. And most are free of charge unlike 40p at Scarborough. Those moorings at short dyke were disappointing with grass that length and I would say dangerous. £5000 a year for a boat on the broads is a lot of money.  I didn't realise it was so expensive. I agree with Katie about the state of some of the public footpaths. I suppose they will be the first facilities to be cut in this modern era. No pun intended. Human waste in the water is a big no no from me. The broads are still the best holiday destination for me and I will be there in 6 days for a week. This is a great forum thanks to you guys and thanks for your inputs. I love your diary threads.

You could try speaking to Dave at Broads Edge Marina Stalham it has lovely leafy green areas tree lined and is perhaps one of the loveliest marina's on the Broads there are mostly stern on moorings with a few side on ones and it is not to expensive.   https://www.broadsedgemarina.co.uk/

    Kind Regards

    Dave Beard

But don't call him Dave. It's David. Go in person. That's what I did and got a mooring there and then. Beautiful marina.

Who is surprised at this whole EV issue being one large con? Not me!!! It seems just one more blessed opportunity for car manufacturers to ramp up the price of cars - make them more simple  but hey, lets ramp up the price!!!!

Bit similar to Sadiq Khans ULEZ zone! I read the other day, in a not well publicised report, that many of the so called particulates in  inner city areas did indeed come from cars and other vehicles but not from the engines, but tyres!

You heard from me first, folks - remember that!!! Altogether more plausible given that modern diesel cars are now as clean as petrol cars!

Interesting read. Additional to tyres and probably more dangerous to us is brake dust. I've wondered for a long time about how much brake dust is in the air.

  6. What a shame. We've used it many times over the years. Them having to close, due to what will probably be a disproportionate increase in rent, is everything that is wrong with the modern world. I will walk to the Angel Inn in future to support them.

  7. I'm going back 5 yrs but when I used a £1 card in the electric Post I always left the next morning with 40 pence on the post. That was charging the batteries, tv, toaster and other things. The Bridge Inn at Acle used to charge a fiver for electric, which i thought was enough. £10 is taking the mick. I won't be mooring there again.

Ah ha, good thought.  So basically an extension cable, How many metres do you think, silly question as I do not know how many metres I have onboard..  I will don my dunces hat and go into the naughty corner.

Just get a second cable. How long is a piece of string is the answer to how many metres.

  9. You might be pleased to hear that modern outboard engines are reasonably good at charging your batteries. They are not as good as the diesel inboard engines but not bad all the same. Make sure you set your fridge correctly so that it keeps everything cool but doesn't flog itself to death when there is no need. Get an additional length of shorepower cable because you often get moored too far from an available electric post for one cable. It's all good fun.

  10. Regarding the 240v hook up. If I am correct you only have 1 leisure battery and a starter battery. Depending on what electrical equipment you will be using the 1 leisure battery won't last long with the fridge and some lighting. If you moor up at an electric post and plug the boat in you can charge up the batteries and use the 3 pin plug sockets without worrying about the charge left on your battery. (TV, toaster etc)  I'm not familiar with an inverter and how they work but I'm sure someone will explain about them. I hope this makes sense and helps

  11. We passed it last week to and from HWs. It looks a mess but as has been said there seems to be less rough looking live aboards than there used to be. It always intrigues my wife when we see such boats. As the saying goes. The light is on but no one's at home.

  12. Good luck with your new boat I hope all goes well. I looked at the boat and it is as new. I don't know how many petrol tanks it has on board but if its only 1 then it is worth investing in another. It gives you an extended cruising range and peace of mind knowing you have a second tank to fall back on. I've had a couple of Vikings in the past so although my knowledge is limited fell free to ask if you are stuck.

  13. It's threads like this that put me off buying another boat. We have just had a week on a hire boat and to be fair we had no issues but I did witness some very stupid behaviour by let's just say a same sex group on two boats.

I love the northern broads but they do attract some idiots whereas the southern broads tend to be a bit more gentile. Still a wonderful place to be and as we all know there are some lovely quiet places to moor.

You obviously haven’t been to Broom lately!! 😉

I haven't been to Brooms for about 6 years. I think the last pumpout I paid for was about 5 yrs ago at Sutton boatyard. £10 I think it was. I suppose everything is going up in price.

  15. We've just come back from the broads today after a week hiring from HW. Unfortunately the fridge packed in so we went back to the yard where a new one was fitted very quickly. Whilst I was there I got a free pumpout as we were 5 days into our 7. I didn't realise how expensive it could have been for 1 pumpout. £18 for one sounds expensive. I suppose I'm out of touch.

Not sure if this will work, but if it does, it’s a shot taken with one of my drones:

Some DJI drones have a facility to make 360 degree panoramas by taking multiple shots and stitching them together.  They have to be viewed using third party software though.

That is brilliant. It's marvellous what you can do with modern technology, which is leaving me behind all too quickly. I'd love to see more like it. Thanks for posting.
