Oh dear, hope everyone was ok!

    Sorry Kron,

    Missed your post entirely.

Thanks for your concern. No personal physical damage, since I dropped the phone (when clouds of smoke became accompanied by a 1 inch long flame!).

And no loss of data (thanks to the "Cloud"). The sofa, carpet and rug are as different story but the house insurance payout helped.

    p.s.

Can't help feeling sorry for the sea-going fraternity re these bridges. I can imagine the frustration.

We'll never suffer from that problem because I just have to be in a craft that I can sleep on but also makes it under THAT other notorious bridge at least once a year. (I wonder when that will mean sleeping in a canoe!)

@TeamElla Please can you give it another try.

The problem should be resolved now... It was down to Apple not collecting an automated payment from us :default_rolleyes:

Believe it or not, it costs NBN £79 a year to have the free iOS app in the store - And that's on top of other costs for running our platform, of course.

    Thanks OG,

Re-installed and in use again for a few days now

    Ta v much

I used to buy the odd copy and have various months issues between 2004 and 2014 (totalling 35 issues), if anyone wants them as follows:-

    2006 - Jan / Oct / Nov

    2007 - April

    2008 - Jan / Feb / July / Aug / Sept / Nov / Dec

    2010 - Jan / March / June / Sept / Oct

    2011 -  Feb / May / July / Aug / Sept / Nov

    2012 - Apr / Sept / Oct

    2013 - Sept

    2014 - Sept

It's all or nothing, as I want to make space, so they're all going to recycling unless anyone wants them ALL.

Available either for collection in Kent or by arrangement on the Broads.

  4. Personally, I don't think that you can beat a centre cockpit cruiser with easy side access if travelling solo.

Any regulars on here will tell you this:-

With the fore and aft mooring ropes both brought together at the central stepping off point (to take ashore with you), mooring up is a doddle even in windy conditions. That is, as long as you don't take too long getting ashore in an offshore wind (as opposed to an onshore wind).

A central side cleat is handy too with a short mooring rope attached, so that you can quickly secure it to an adjacent mooring post on the bank (ensuring that the boat will now stay put), whilst having thrown both fore and aft ropes onto the bank for securing afterwards at your leisure.

Leaving the bank single handed in a strong onshore wind is a different matter. There's a reliable way of doing it with help from someone on the bank but it's tricky single handed.

You must remember these are not '"sailing programmes" they are tv. General entertainment,  like flogg-it is not an in depth antique show.

    That's a good point.

On the other hand, so was "Britain and the Sea." Much more entertaining to watch (and these programmes often include some snippets of navigational interest).

  6. I looked forward to this first programme with interest. It’s a route that I have long been interested in and wanted to travel.

What an utter disappointment with the first leg being completely wiped out.

The apparently professional crew can’t even make it out of the harbour without their engine failing.(I am no diesel engine specialist but I would be devastated if my maintenance was so poor that I couldn’t motor 200 yards without engine failure).

Hoping for an improvement on the second leg (it didn’t), and the interaction between the celebrities became utterly irritating.

Finally on the last stretch some interest as they crossed the Thames Estuary but the jury is out on whether I want to see any more of this series.

  7. Why do you think someone parking like that, has a boat.
Are you saying boat owners cannot park a car?

A better heading would have been “Hope he doesn’t own a boat.”
Unfortunately I think I’ve met him on the river

  8. Regular increase in wind with rain followed by dry calm spells (at St. Olaves).

    At Gorleston:-

Decent sized long swell running into the river and occasionally spraying over the bank right inside the river at the 90 degree turn (pics attached)

  9. So they have got the times wrong in the past have they?
    Didn’t know that.

I like to use the printed tables as they’re readily available to hand. When the GPS is on I can even compare the Gorleston predictions.

My original point (not helped by my later bad grammar relating to Saturday) was the need to work on dates rather than the incorrectly printed days of the week.

  10. Wednesday next week not looking much of a day if you use BA the tables (the one you can buy with your river toll).
Thursday and Friday looking out of kilter too.
But if Saturday doesn’t work out for you, you can have another stab at it the next day!

  11. Could this be why we have noticed large numbers of fish at St. Olaves Marina too?

We've been there 17 years and only recently noticed such large shoals of fish there. It's attracted cormorants, that used to visit occasionally but now they're a regular sight within the marina.

  12. Hello Vaughan,

Yes we use 3 strand rather than the braided in the video.

But I'm left handed and I do have the exact problem with knots forming as demonstrated when making the coils before hanging them  up. (And I was taught to do it that way 50 years ago by a sailing instructor!).

  13. Hylander,

I think you'll find it's Waxham Cut out of Horsey Mere and it's weedy with a capital W above the bridge at the north end (well it was in 2002!)

See picture taken halfway up the cut which gives you a feel for what it's like up there:-

So you have actually taken your boat up to the Staithe?

    Oh no, not at all.

That board to the left of the picture is the old (apparently now missing) "shallow water" sign at the entrance to the dyke that ultimately leads to Kings Fleet etc. It's only yards off the main dyke into Bargate.

Should something as large as a 44 footer emerged from within those confined and potentially shallow backwaters, apart from the shock of seeing it come out of there, I  doubt that we had left enough deep water alongside us for it to pass by without running aground (although tenders, canoes etc would pass with ease).

We ventured in on the inflatable tender from which the picture was taken and had no idea how to reach the staithe at the time.

It's pretty clear that the staithe is meant just for locals, so we wouldn't land there now anyway.

  15. Hello Paul,

Cole Parmers is £300+ but at lease it floats if dropped.

The thing to look out for is minimum depth measurement (as some cheap ones don't read less than 0.8 metres).

Spec of the one on Cole Parmer's site unknown.

Suggest cheaper option (your sacrificial crew member !)
