Prop removal on Volvo 290DP outdrive

HI All

Looks like my boat is coming out later this week at Derby Quay in Beccles (Luke's mate Jim's place). I know I have a couple of chips in the starboard props, and I thought that this would be an ideal opportunity to attend to them.

According to the owners manual I have, it looks at though a special tool is needed to get them off. I have spoken to French Marine in Rackheath, who have told me there is indeed a special tool, but it is only available for Volvo specialists, and ordinary mortals can't buy them.

Question: Is the special tool needed, and if so where can you get one?

hi Mark, there is a special tool and there are normaly plenty on ebay. Have not taken mine off yet as had them overhauled last time by a maine engineer but so I am told, you can do it without the tool with not to many problems.

Cobblers, that they are only a dealer tool that is. Part numbers below, it is not a good idea to try removing them without one and it's probably a good thing to have on board anyway. Try Volspec or Coastal Rides if fleabay hasn't got any for sale at the moment.

I know an outdrive prop fitting is completely different to a shaft drive fitting, and will require the special tool to remove it without damaging bearings etc., but the title of the thread reminded me of when I last changed my prop.

I was on the boat hoist at Boulters, slipping around on the wooden boards, and I was bu******ing about with my selection of three leg pullers, trying to get a 15" bronze prop off the taper of a 30mm diameter stainless shaft. Even my largest puller, quite heavy, and about 15" long, wasn't making the slightest impression.

One of the Guys in the yard noticed my pathetic attempts and came over with a "drift" a huge solid metal bar with a concave end, and a 28lb sledge.

"Dong...", and it was off ....

Why is nothing bloody easy? I've spoken to Coastal rides, who tell me there are two different tools available, and which one you need depends on what nut has been installed behind the first prop. A lot of the earlier ones got changed for new style nuts, so there is no way of telling until the boat is out of the water and the first prop is off

Anybody even looking like coming near my ship with a 28lb hammer would be wearing it, the possible shock damage to other components doesn’t bear thinking about. I guess they might come up to date eventually and at least use a 12.75KG hammer.

When I took the prop off Tranquil Breeze it just needed a couple of taps with a nylon mallet and it came off the taper a treat. Getting the nuts undone in the first place was a different matter though! At least that was a shaft without all the delicate bearings etc to worry about!

I am a bit late on this post...but had exact same situation on jupes as you...no "special" prop tool in my kit bag... so I naively asked goodchilds to do it (whilst I watched) and indeed no special tool was required!!!

However, if you think that you do need one, I seem to have acquired "said beastie" in my volvo pack on the Bling! ANd I am pretty sure our drives are the same design.

Thanks Adam, that's much appreciated.

I think now, having slept on it and debated the pro's and con's, and seeing as how both outdrives were removed last July for new bellows etc, that we are not going to have the boat lifted after all this winter. I know there are definately a couple of chips out of the starboard props, but only bits about 10mm (one from one blade on each of the stbd props).

The original reason for the lift was to replace the depth transducer, which testing has shown to be okay. I need to also check the operation of the trim tabs but I can do this with a boat hook to see if I am getting full movement etc. The final thing was the anodes, but again, I'm going to have a peer at them through the water and see what sort of condition they are in, and if they look okay I'll leave them till next Autumn when we will have a proper winter lift out. The money I would have spent on a lift can go towards the canopy repairs to at least try to stop some of the rain coming in!

I couldn't reach James yet, I'll try again shortly, but if he can fit you in feel free! The poor chap is so busy he's struggling for space at the moment, which is another reason for not lifting after all. I have been inundated with work over the past couple of weeks (not that I'm complaining!) so would also feel a bit too pressured to get Serenity in and out, and I don't want to screw anything up by rushing.
