Hylander
I looked at the web cam this morning and we have a rainbow or is it my eyes?
grendel
looking that direction - ie towards sunrise probably not - rainbows are usually seen the opposite direction to that of the sun, it could just be the brightness of the sun causing a spectacular effect at the edges of the glow, either way its a spectacular sight. grendel
looking at it it may be the top part of the crescent of a sun dog or sun halo, just below the horizon Quote A Sun halo, a circle of light that creates a circle 22° wide around the Sun, is a related phenomenon. As with sundogs, hexagonal ice crystals suspended in cirrostratus clouds refract sunlight to create the halo, sometimes also called an icebow, nimbus, or gloriole. Unlike sundogs, which generally only be seen when the Sun is near the horizon, the halo is visible even when the Sun is high. Sundogs appear along the 22° halo and disappear as the Sun rises. which is a much rarer event than a rainbow - so well done for spotting it.
