Broads Authority Notice

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

The fog has lifted and Breydon has now re-opened to hire craft. There may still be areas of localised fog/mist in the Broads so please be cautious.

Wishing you a good afternoon and weekend when you get there,

Kind regards

Good afternoon all,

As you have likely seen from the news, Storm Ciarán is forecast to hit the Broads area on Thursday 02 November 2023. Met Office weather warnings of wet and windy weather are currently issued for the East of England, with potential gusts of up to 60 mph.

We are advising boaters not to navigate during the storm where possible, and that fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life.

Please ensure boats and covers are secure, and to be aware that high water levels will continue to make navigation difficult in some areas, especially under low bridges. Some moorings may also become flooded.

For boaters who are on the rivers during high winds, please be mindful of where you moor up, avoiding areas with lots of trees and other potentially-unstable structures. When mooring, make sure to adjust your ropes, be aware of the effect that wind has on your steering and be extra careful getting off and on the boat.

Broads Authority Rangers have increased the number of safety checks around the Broads before the storm and will be undertaking additional checks afterward, particularly looking for any trees that might be down in the navigation or any other obstructions.

Check tide times and flood warnings before you travel: https://check-for-flooding.service.gov.uk/alerts-and-warnings

To report fallen trees and obstructions please contact Broads Control which operates daily between 9am – 5pm (on 01603 756056 or email Broads.Control@broads-authority.gov.uk) and call 999 during an emergency.

Good morning,

Boating News - Notice is hereby given that there will be an inspection being carried out on Breydon Bridge, which involves lifting the nose end of the bridge into a semi-lifted position.

A safety work boat will be present in the channel within the affinity of the bridge. The works are due to take place on 31 January 2024, between the hours of 20:00hrs and 06:00hrs.

Note: During the above period, navigation will remain open, but the bridge will be unable to lift for larger vessels and the centre span will be closed. Vessels must exercise great care whilst proceeding past the vicinity of the works.

Please ensure that the area is taken into consideration for passage planning and when navigating in this area.

If travelling across Breydon Water, you will need to pass through Breydon Bridge. Do not risk going through the bridge unless you have sufficient clearance, always check the gauge at the side of the bridge.

When approaching go through the right-hand side span and navigate between the two arrows on the bridge.

Keep about 100 yards distance from any boat going in the same direction to give yourself room to manoeuvre. Yacht skippers have difficulties in manoeuvring their yachts with their masts down and it is impossible for them to reverse, so motor cruisers should always give way to yachts.

Electricity supplies at Reedham Yacht Station

Due to power supply issues, we regret to inform boaters that it is not possible to use the electric charging posts at the Authority’s Yacht Station at Reedham.

Our energy suppliers have informed the Authority that it will take much longer than anticipated to re-connect the electricity supply in this location. Our Quay Rangers will still be assisting boaters to moor free of charge in this location and we will update our webpage on moorings when charging is available again.
