  1. Barry,

How do you mean there is only Cassandra left now, do you mean of that particular class?

we have had Brookwind in our wet shed for the last 17 years, Bubblegap was in amazing when she left the shed but that was a few years ago now, I think she is in Loddon now, we also have one called 'Muddy Waters' I am not sure what she was but is about 32ft? bright varnished and mid restoration looking fantastic.

there is Merrywind with riverside boat sales and Lady Berol in Southampton (that is off the top of my head) I also remember one at Native yacht Co in Brundall a few years ago, she was in good nick but needed finishing.

  2. Great photos again Barry,

There used to be a 'Windboat' similar to the one in your previous Picture of Ranworth, she was moored near Wroxham bridge years ago in the cut between the Hotel Wroxham and the car park opposite the Chineese which you cant park in now! I wonder what happened to her....

  3. Hi all, This picture was taken in 1949 in Oulton Broad for the Lowestoft Journal, the small boy (Bobbby Rudd) now in his 70s visited us last year while over fron Australia. The launches were Dads, not sure about the dingey, W63 was called 'Vivo'

    Left to right were..

George Pigney, Robert(Bob) Richardson, Arthur Skitterall, Regie Bullen, Jimmy ?..?, Bobby Rudd, Bert Gooch, Arthur Wigg, Arthur Moor.

Sorry about the copy it is off a piece of paper with 3 folds in it!

    cheers..

  4. Hi Plesbit,

I tried pausing it but they are a bit blurred, Dad did not recognise any so he thought it may have been after he sold in '58, also he had 33 boats moored from both sides of the river (he had Parkers old yard which he sold to Hamptons) That was a reason he moved as people complained about the narrow gap he left down the middle.

I said they were probably out on hire and the boats on site were visiting?

  5. Hi, this is strange but as I was on the computer last night I saw a TV clip out of the corner of my eye, I thught it was Oulton Broad, so at work today I checked BBC iplayer, http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00drtpj/Ian_Hislop_Goes_off_the_Rails/

if you look between 29.40 mins and 30 mins there is a shot of OB in colour from what I think is the 50s not many painted hulls!

It shows the reverse of the picture at the top of the page, hope you find this of interest.

  6. Crikey Terry, cant put much past you! I think the boats gave it away,

I just noticed you got the middle boat spot on!

I recon the year was about 1955, this 'New shed' was built then and I assume that is the reason the picture was taken.

there were 9 yards and 1 house between the Wherry and the railway/road, Now just houses and a pub!

  7. No problem, it has happened all my life, even my parents get my name wrong!!

The building shop was put up about 1960, so you could be right, I have some other pictures which were probably taken on the same day so will have a look later.

The 'building shop' was bought from Colemans in norwich (at least every other truss) dad said it was old then, he gave about £12 for it

  8. Hi Ian,

    The small print says

'R.K. obtained SILVER MEDAL AND DIPLOMA at International Fisheries Exhibition, London, 1883 for fishing boat on Norfolk and Suffolk Broads.'

I think John Loynes got the gold but apparently there was some contoversy over this as Kemps was better! I think he built a boat too. funnily enough I was in a shop in Norwich about 10 years ago (Hovells)and saw the certificate for the bronze medal haning on the wall it looked the same as ours it is about 2.5x3 feet!

the fishing boat is a real work of art.

    cheers, Clive.

  9. Thanks guys,

I have never dared post on the other site incase I got gaught up in a b*tch fight!

Terry, I do recognise the avatar, it brings back distant memories! Perhaps if you said 'one of' the oldest I'd get away with it, also get some of your photos up on here before I do !

As for the Racecourse, well its not just the friendly, fun family atmosphere, ample parking massive indoor and outdoor play areas or great carvery and menu which make it so good, it also has fantastic air conditioning cheers Brian!

    (shameless plug(s) over!)

  10. Hello,

This is what I wrote on the BMPT forum a while back, if she was a Fairmile D then she would have been 112 feet long but unladen not drawn more than about 3 or 4 feet if that, not much more than a sailing boat. if you are interested there are more 'anoracks' and info on Ex military houseboats on the broads here. http://www.bmpt.co.uk/forum_posts.asp?TID=282&PN=1 most of the info came from Carol.

    Hi All,

I think I found the remains of MTB 653 a couple of months ago, if it is what I think it is.

I could not get a very good picture but will try again from the water or borrow a decent camera.

there is very little of her (presuming it is) but my reason for the assumption is the shape and length of her stem, it is dead straight and quite long. there is no deck, the aft disappears into some trees and 'pointing' to the right there is no starboard side in her, except for a couple of feet, there is probably 20-30 feet of the forward port withonly the interior visable, you can see numerous timbers/ frames which seem quite close together and the bow is quite sharp.

I am sorry for not having a photo to discuss but she is in the S/E corner of Salhouse broad in Norfolk, you cannot see her from google earth but is just to the top right of the 'boat shaped' clump of trees.

  11. Thanks for the offers, the scanning problem is that my girlfriend does all the Graphic design for us and she is busy with the brochure but I can squeeze a few in every now and then! I will take some home tonight.

I think we looked in 'Black sailed traders' but although there was a list of wherries built and their builders Robert Kemp does not get a mention!

Regarding the private moorings, yes it is a bit of a mud bath at the moment but will look really good in a week or two, the wet shed is also getting 15 new private moorings as well as new roof lights and shed side, apparently it is the biggest wet shed in the UK, can anyone confirm this ? Anway, I am not really here to talk about the business just share some interesting points, perhaps I should get a different hat (probably a tin one!) and log in under the business name to talk about all our wonderful facilities!

    Chers, Clive.

  12. Hello again,

    Thanks, how about this?

The wherry in the picture is 'British Queen' Robert Kemp did not build it he did build 'Chieftain' and 2 or 3 others, it is written in a book which they were But I have been unable to find out which book!

    Glad you find it interesting.

    Clive.

  13. The following information may help:

Robert Kemp at Oulton Broad 1869

    John Loynes at Norwich 1878

George Applegate at Potter Heigham 1880

    Arthur Press at Coltishall 1881

John Loynes moved to Wroxham 1882

    Robert Collins at Wroxham 1886

John Hart at Thorpe Gardens Public House 1888

The above dates from documentary evidence.

    Hi all,

Thought this may be of interest, Robert Kemp is the Great Great Grandfather of me and Paul (Richardson) and our sister Laura.

He started building Wherries behind his Fathers pub 'The Lady of the Lake' in Oulton Broad on Lake Lothing before moving to Commodore road where he built a shed behind old mill house.
