Hi all
To recap I have been having a problem getting my engines to rev up to the manufacturers spec. Servicing etc made only a little difference so following advice from Clements, the prop people, I decided to take the plunge and go with their suggestion to lower the pitch to their calculations.
After a 4.30 a.m start this morning to drive to St.Neots, I got back in time to get Sea Jem back in and take her for a river trial (with Trade Plates of course). I am pleased that the engines now rev to exactly where they should at full throttle, the top speed being about the same as before as far as we could tell in the confines of the river.
I was in two minds whether to do this or not but I now feel the engines are straining less so that can only be good..right and the black smoke that was always present under load has much reduced.

Hi Ian
Please can you confirm the planned dates for the trip - I'm sure it's in the thread somewhere but can't see it for looking

Many thanks- that helps alot - I'll stop looking at the 15hp thing then

Thanks for the reply - I could not find any stamping - I must admit I was expecting to see something.
Would a 4 HP be sufficient to use at sea in an emergency (not far from the land)?

The mystery of setting tappets is solved, i found out if you read the book properly, then turn the engine in the correct direction it is actually quite easy !

Hi Thanks for that - yes I have found a similar reference to the rule of 13 for the 6 cyl. engines .I will have a play

The harder question hasn't been asked yet! "Which valve is an inlet and which an exhaust"
Ah..that bits easy - there is a picture in the book with arrows
-
Thanks all - still
I'll have a play - it will probably be obvious once the penny drops - just seems to take a little longer these days

When the piston is at TDC (Top dead centre) the point at which the valves are neither opening or closing. The rockers will then have a little free play in them.
Hiya
That's sort of what I thought..but why then are we checking another cylinder because at that stage all the others surely will be moving and will have no clearance...being rather thick today sorry
thanks

Hi all - now I am getting used to clambering around the engine bay I thought i would check the tappets..seeing as they are on the service list. The manual talks about the valves "rocking" and then says when no x rocks adjust y and gives a table of valves to adjust vs valves rocking.
What do they mean by rocking?

Hi Paul, fancy dropping in at WRC on ur way round?R&R, Lucky and us r here and all want to see ur boat.

Hi Jonathan
That seems to be a good plan. I now have all the service items and some forte advance stuff. I did ask the supplier how many I needed and he said two so that's what I got - recieved today and that will do 200 litres - what about the rest of the tank? - As you say I can put a good dose in the filters when I fit them.
I think I'll aim for Breydon on a Sat lunchtime - hopefully that's changeover for most people so it will be quiet.
thanks

Hi
As I get more involved with Sea Jem I am finding the mist clearing in my mind.
I addition to the "tidy up" of my engines and fuel, I have been speaking to Clements Engineering the prop people. They have been most helpful and rekon I have the wrong props fitted which will cause the the engines to be held back. Currently I have 17 x 18 and these need reworking to 17 x 16. Fortunatley they provide a same day service for this so Sea Jem can stay in the slings.
Hopefully I can get this done in the next week or so.(and I can complete the engine jobs so SWMBO can finally get rid of all the oily handprints )

Hi Jimbo
I got my Crossland filters from Peachment - and as they are Nanni dealers I guess they should be able to offer the Crossland equivalents ?

All ordered from Prior Diesel - and with the stock discount the prices for genuine parts are about the same as aftermarket. I did ask them about the oil though as they only supply it in 5 ltr containers and at £20 a go - I need five. They recommended a Whitham alternative - 25 ltrs at 48.00 - so that makes it half price
Also ordered an oil sucky thingy online.
I did spot an interesting piece of work on the engine I have not yet worked on. There are three pullys on the front each with multiple vees. The one belt fitted ( there should be two) used a different vee on each pulley - surprised the belt actually stayed on

also I can't be arsed to do the research.
I am geting to that point now - already confused as to which websites I have been to
Upon reflection I think as I am trying to build up confidence in the engines genuine is probably the way to go.
thanks

Hi - me again
Does anybody use aftermarket filters - if so which brands and are there any to avoid.
I have prices from Volvo for genuine ones and they are not too bad but when you take into account 2 x everything plus spares it adds up.
thanks

...the yacht club bar provides cheap beer..
Thats good enough for me and I'm sure it beats fitting stairs - Seriously I have been there several times but we never got any further than the Swan and the Adms shop - so I dont really have any opinion but the Southwold harbour website does make it look a bit . err.."rural"
I am still looking to join you all at Whitsun to find out, I just have to get some sea training under my belt as she is quite insisant we have a skipper on board first time we go out.

I concur, Southwould is a halfway decent place to go....by car. It's only other advantage is that it's close, me, I wouldn't waste the diesel.
So where would you recommend as a nice run from Lowestoft (not too much futher as I am only just getting her indoors used to the idea of short sea trips)

Hi There
We'd like to come along but will confirm nearer the time
Purbeck Princess
Hi Howard
Great - then there would be two P33's -(subject to approval from her indoors ok). At this rate we'll soon catch up with the Sealines

Well.. some progress today.
All the broken studs are now out and even the one in the crankshaft pulley is now drilled out and re-tapped - many thanks to Robert for the loan of the angle drill.
The old pump impeller had been rubbing against the block for some time so I think there will be quite a lot of cast iron dust around the cooling system. I guess all I can do is to hose through the best I can then fill with just water, run for a few hours then drain off again and replace with coolant
Tomorrow ... hopefully.. touch wood..it's put all the new parts on time

Hi Ian
Yes we do intend being there at Whitsun - subject to dates. I have to be in London on the Friday so need to be back on the Thursday, and would prefer at least one other boat going back that day too.
We are going to try and get a run out to sea before.
best regards
Wayne
ps - how are the stairs?
