  1. Hopefully now got a full A4 list of parts coming via Prior Diesel  - they have been very helpful sourcing the items. Had to have a lie down when I was told how much though :cry Beans on toast for a month for us :(

Even the little pipe - two banjos braised to some 5mm pipe - over 100 quid :o:o

But all original Volvo and seeing as the rest of the boat is very original thought that was the best way to go. Now just need t0 get Witch Hazel on the bruises from putting my large frame into spaces too small for it

    regards

  2. Well I got the crud out - vigorus shaking seems to work.

Eventually got the pump off now just got to get the cut off bolts out of the block :(

Thanking the second bolt out of the crankshaft pulley I then rung the head off - I was taking it off to clean it but decided to do the other bolt back up again rather than open another can of worms - there's still five good ones and it's only running the alternator and water pump.

There is also a little pipe about 5mm dia that runs from the top of the turbo back to the top of the thermostat housing - aparently that is because the turbo is higher than the tank. This part is now not stocked to I guess I will have to find some fittings and use rubber hose. That will be helpful anyway as the pipe runs under the intake manifold and I would have to take that off as well to fit a rigid pipe - the old one came through o.k - will a little extra help :naughty:

The water pump was totally shot and looks like it had been leaking for a long long time.

  3. Hi Wayne the water pipe (if is raw water) heading to the Turbo will be to cool the air in the inter-cooler (to make it more dense) The turbo is cooled by the air passing through it which makes this air hot. So should be no damage to the turbo. This will cause overheat though as Gear box oil cooler, inter-cooler, heat exchanger and oil cooler are all connected in series.

    Hi Jonathan

It's a little pipe - about 6mm in dia and it goes from the thermostat hsg to the turbo. On top of all the other problems I have to take the heat exchanger apart. There is a drain plug on the bottom and when I undid it nothing came out. There was a plug of crud - so I poked it with a screwwdiver and rather than disintegrating and alling out the whole solid plug went inside

  4. O.K - so now geting all the parts ready for the service- Quite looking forward to having a go but I am a little stumped with chosing the oil.

Obviously I could go to Vovlo ££££££'s. The book says 15W/40 to API CD - which apparently is an old spec for Compression Diesel. Searching the internet people seem to use various products ranging from the expensive to Tesco's own brand.

What do you all use in diesels?

    thanks

  5. Hi all

Ran the engines today for 10 mins and all seemd o.k - I guess the "bowl" filter had filled itself up or it's going to wait until I am in the river before the engine conking out!

Anyway the fuel line goes as follows:

If I have to change the spin on after stiring the tank up would I an guessing I dont have to bleed ?

    Thanks

  6. Thanks for the quick reply.

I think they are just water traps. There is a vent on the bottom and there were no elements inside - maybe there should be??

They are followed by quite a large crosland 592 spin on filter. I found an engine manual but it seemed to stop before the fuel "prepartaion" system.

I'll spark them up tomorrow and see what happens.

    Thanks again

  7. Hi - So Thursday evening - bit bored - decided to have a play in the engine bay. The first "filters" in the fuel line seem to be water traps. I took the bowls off and cleaned quite a bit of cr..er..sediment out and put all back together nice and shiney clean.

Next to do are spin on filters, but awaiting delivery so left them for now. Anyway now I have a bowl full of air in the fuel lines. Do I need to bleed them - if so as they are higher than the tank?

Many thanks and smelling of diesel

  8. Hi - I think it is a danforth, well that style anyway - It may be one of the similar copies.

I dont really intend anchoring anywhere yet - I like being attached to something soild like a pontoon or quay - it's just the boat survey recommmeded it , as did the Sea Safe check.

    Thanks for your help

  9. Hi all

Just trying to get my salty - "list of things to buy and do" - put together

It has been suggested on a couple of occasions that it is a good idea to carry a kedge anchor. The main anchor is the folding type and I understand it is usual the kedge is something different - but what?

The boat is 33 ft - can anyone advise please?

    thanks in advance
