Thanks for the advice, very much appreciated. Winter cruising is on my to do list and after reading some of the posts on here sooner rather than later.
Extra duvets, woolly hats and gloves, hot water bottles, throws, extra coats and warm clothing, I will probably resemble a Yeti with that lot on Lol,

I know there are not many if at all any hire Boats out in the winter but do many of you private Boat owners on here do much winter cruising?
Apart from obvious dangers such as ice, slippery pontoons and the cold it must be wonderful to have the rivers to yourselves, and I would imagine if you have good heating on your Boat it can be lovely and cosy.
The latest in the year that we have hired has been October and that was probably my favourite time, would like to have a cruise in winter, just wondered about the pros and cons.

Hi Lori
Sorry can't answer your question but been thinking of collecting these books for some time, are they a good read?
Crime and Murder are my favourite type of book, so Crime and Murder on the Broads and I am in heaven Lol

Hi Hockham Admiral
Brilliant answer and so simple, sometimes my brain does hurt and can't say I was having a blonde moment when asking that question because I actually am blonde Lol

Good question, have never even given it a thought, although we have had no problems wild mooring that's not to say we might not in the future.
If wild mooring on a hire boat and you have a medical emergency during the night, with no mobile signal what would you do?
I suppose if it's not medical and fairly minor you would just sit and wait and hope someone cruises past and shout for help, be interesting to read others views on this.

Just looked at Jonzo's link and wow what a lovely Boat, need my numbers to come up.
Think you will find that Silverline is highly regarded on here, totally agree with Alan about cooking on holiday, we tend to have our main meal at one of the pubs and no washing up yay

Went to Wateringbury yesterday to see friends and walked along the river at Bow Bridge marina, all the boats that were on the hard standing were scattered everywhere, it resembled a Boat graveyard, there were Boats on top of Boats, I know people have lost homes and valuables but still very sad to see.
After a chat with the Marina owner it seems he can't crane them off due to the sodden ground but will do as soon as he is able.
Let's hope they are all insured and can get sorted as soon as possible.

Hi Donnygeoff
Had No problems with Star Gem at all, as BroadScot pointed out there can be a bit of an issue with the bed but in general the Boat is well fitted out and very roomy. We had two weeks aboard Star Gem 2 a few years ago and we had a wonderful time, hope you enjoy her as much and a very happy 25th Anniversary to you both.

Yes I have, lovely Boats do they still only have the two for hire?

Thankyou Norfolknog, anything that floats on the Broads does it for me, I just find Richardsons to be such good value and you have the choice of budget, middle of the road and luxury Boats. We have hired from Herbert Woods and Fen Craft in Brundall now sadly gone but keep coming back to Richardsons. I don't mind a bit of luxury but do find the older Boats have more character and just enjoy them more. Having said that if Husband was to hire the Broadsman or Carousel who am I to moan Lol

That's why I always try to get to the Mooring for the Pilot as early in the day as possible, fewer people about to witness any mistakes, now we've got the damned web cams Lol.
Another plus for wild moorings is very few people about to witness any mooring disasters,

Have to say wild mooring is just the best in my opinion, moor at a pub for lunch and a couple of drinks and then find yourself a wild mooring get the fishing rods out open a bottle of wine and watch the Boats go by. At night you feel like you're the only people in the whole world, sheer bliss.

Symphony looks lovely, don't know which Boat to choose now thanks a lot guys haha.
Have you hired a Broadland Wave before Simon? A lovely Boat, great for fishing and sitting outside in the evening with a drink or two. Hope you enjoy her as much as we did.

Yes have looked at Silverline and very nice Boats indeed, just got a huge soft spot for Richardsons, first ever hire boat we had was from them and yes the loyalty Card does help Lol.
We are having the usual family holiday in August but hoping for October for just the two of us.
Thanks for the replies guys

Looking to hire a 2 berth Boat for a break with my husband (no kids yay) Richardsons being the preferred yard. Have hired Star Gem and Broadland Wave in the past both fantastic Boats but we always hire a different Boat for each holiday. Been looking at Broadland Lass and Salerno, any other ideas would be great.
Requirements are nothing posh just plenty of room and comfy.

Happy New Year to you all, lets hope it's healthy and prosperous for everyone.
Hopefully a long hot summer for great boating adventures, if all goes to plan in 2014 we're hoping to have a couple of holidays and some long weekends on the Broads, so excited and can't wait.
All the Best and to everyone
