  1. Recently we were on the river for the week and towed our dinghy as the trip ended with meeting friends at Ranworth Island. Didn't get a chance to use her last year and we don't often take her with us due to the faffing around involved when mooring stern on.

I had forgotten what great fun it is messing around in the dinghy. We went across to the pub with two other dinghys on the first night. I had a bit of a row at Horning & more of a rowing at Ranworth.

It's not that long ago that there were lots of people rowing tenders on the Broads - it's great fun ( had 2 ice creams on the second day when doing my ferry service bit), good exercise and a great chance to see the hidden bits of our lost waterways.

We popped to Hickling on the last day of the hols and have eyed up an excellent slipway to launch her later this summer - fabulous!

  2. Sounds like you had a nice break - agree re the walk to the Third Crossing it is a bit strange. Do love Lowestoft - lots of hidden gems - the old town, the scores, the museum, the beaches and Ness point all fab & an even better way of getting there from Oulton Broad now via the ferry. Looking forwards to reading the rest of your trip!

  3. Evening Lastdraft,

As they are navy chaps I would show them Breydon, maybe followed by a pootle down the Waveney to Beccles. It would also be good to fit in a cruise through both Rockland and Surlingham.. All depends how much time you want cruising. Enjoy and fingers crossed for the weather.

  4. If you have facility to plug in get a 2kw radiator & check out all the electric point moorings - brilliant and will keep you nice and toasty. Watch that quay heading it can be very slippy later in the year. Does sound lovely and enjoy!

  5. There are some great moorings at the Museum of the Broads if you want to visit whist they are open plus it's also close to the town which does have quite a few hidden gems!

  6. Hello Robert, shower wise Barnes Brinkcraft Wroxham, , Herbert Woods at Potter Heigham and Ferry Marina Horning in addition to Richardsons. Boat showers are usually very good. Would also recommend bus or taxi to Yarmouth. The Yacht station is a fair walk away from the seaside & it will take you 1.5 to 2 hours from Acle Bridge by boat each way. Have a lovely week whatever you decide to do.

  7. Best thing about the Broads is there is something for everyone & whether you go north or south you have to pass through the wonder that is Breydon to get there - surely one of the best bits! 0dd8c3425b02f9bd64a43821546ab945.jpg

  8. Great post JennyMorgan. Wasn't around then but sounds brilliant! There are some lovely pieces at the Museum of the Broads about Harry Last including a fantastic model yacht!

  9. Totally agree with Gracie - mudweight in the middle of a broad, summer eve, the wildlife & sitting in the open air just watching the world go by! What's more doing exactly that tonight! Will just add an early morning or late evening trip across Breydon into the mix! Love it!

  10. Went on the Canal du Midi a couple of years ago. Lovely scenery, parts quite busy as per the Broads and lovely weather - that was in May. There were 6 of us which worked well in the locks taking turns and we had a couple of bikes which also worked well. If you go make sure you fill up with water at every opportunity as working water points were extremely hard to find.

  11. Faves from the boat cookbook as a child were - luncheon meat fritters - always lightly golden, the tinned pies (which always avoided) copious amounts of tinned soup & best of all chips! The oil could never get hot enough to make them golden so they were beautifully mushy! The Osocool wasn't much good or big enough for much fresh stuff! Suffice to say my boat cookbook today is somewhat different!
