  1. I was thinking along the same lines Jawsorca, reduce the power to much and it could make things dangerous. The tech specs for my engine say 2600rpm maximum load speed and there was one occasion at Great Yarmouth I actually had to use it......or Id have been going backwards! Like you say its not the power thats available at fault its the numpty with his hand on the throttle!

  2. How do these governers work out of interest? With my experience of owning an ex hireboat with a Nanni diesel the engine speeds are set to an operating range when manufactured. I dont believe hire yards change this but I could well be wrong. Ive always understood it as a boat that isnt designed to plane has a hull speed by design, install a 50hp or a 150hp engine makes no difference to the speed?

  3. I have to be totally honest and say I agree with you to a certain extent smellyloo but in the case of speeding or otherwise reckless behaviour I think video of the event ending up on youtube and forums such as this one are exactly what is required to highlight these incidents. In a naive way I hope they serve as a deterrant to others! Im not a fan of camera pointing on the whole but in certain circumstances its not a bad thing at all.

  4. This is totally shocking, imagine if they had done this passing a smaller boat with a family onboard, a baby sat on mums knee and a hot cup of coffee on the table nearby. Its reckless behaviour and I hope they are dealt with. They just spoil it for people who know how to behave and theres more and more of this being reported of late. Idiots like them just make boating stressful.......and breath

  5. My wife who heard partially more of the news than I did thought the news report said a lady in her 70s had a cardiac event and fell off a boat (may not be correct) but is being treated so hopefully the lady is ok.

  6. Thats a shame, hope it was ok but I'd have thought it would have heard you coming and kept well out of the way! Unless there was a massive pike chasing it and you actually hit the pike and did it a favour

  7. Presuming 12v If its just a volt meter there should only be two connections positive and neutral (except an extra positive for the gauge back light if it has one which would just be a switched live or ignition live feed, the back lights usually take the neutral from the main neutral to the gauge) you could wire it back to the battery but it may be a bit of a faff and you could really just connect the gauge into your 12v circuit wherever is easiest and closest to where you a putting the gauge, make sure your connections are good tho!

  8. All good advice and information but please tell me what to do about my noisy neighbour whos got a diy habit/fetish to which he can spend all day saturdays and sundays banging and clatering in his shed, Ive been praying for a sinkhole under his shed while hes at work but so far no luck

  9. I think people leaving their mooring and waking me up before atleast 1030am is down right anti social behaviour to be honest.....i mean, why cant people just bring a set of oars with them and set off quietly

  10. Robin in the past I hired a number of times from the same yard Belmore TC is available and each time had to call them out for dodgy batteries, each time one battery needed replacement! I could never decide if I was just unlucky or if it was a trend but I never experienced this same problem at any other yard we hired from! If a hire yard ensured that the batteries onboard were working properly before each hire commenced it could alleviate some need to have engines running on moorings, but wont stop some as there as some that must like the sound of it!

  11. Hi Grace, i myself have witnessed some OTT behavior from owners on a few occasions, not always towards hirers either! I immediately dislike any boat owner who becomes all anal about their boat being "brushed" which we all know can easily happen when coming in to moor alongside, we cant wrap them in bubble wrap and some people really do need to get over themselves. The thing that frays my nerves is when you get hit under power because there really is no need for that, people can just make a bad situation worse doing that but otherwise to a certain degree some slight contact when mooring has got to be tolerated as it can happen to the best of us!
