  1. Kate and I have just returned from a most relaxing week on Cerise Lady , where we travelled south to attend the (un)official gathering at Beccles , met a few fellow forumites (as in the Admirals blog of the event so no need to repeat), we had never visited Beccles , nor The Locks Inn at Geldston or indeed Oulton Broad and found them all to be beautiful, special mention must go to the staff at OBYS who were fantastic as was the meal in The Commodore.

not going to write a long blog but have attached a few pics of our week

  2. Anti social groups sadly come in all ages and sexes , the only way to effectively "police" bad behaviour is to report it to the authorities AND the hire yards and IF the yards and authorities are seen to act quickly and forcefully then hopefully it will be curtailed.

yes all male ,and female groups are often the offenders and if a simple extra contract about behaviour liable to end the hiring with no return of monies is issued then perhaps they may be more likely to behave.

the Broads are all about enjoying yourselves but not at the expense of others enjoyment .

we all have smart phones (Well almost all) and if the offending boats are videoed then they can have no defence when yard is emailed the video and they lose their holiday and money

For all boat moorings, I feel sorry for the couple in a 20' boat who pay the full whack as a 44 footer with twice the beam, take up half the space, and can only spend enough for two meals.

Then people insist you close the gap... I paid for up to 44 ' so I can have a minimum gap of 12' front and back. lol

If it's a Broads Authority (free) mooring, then I have paid the toll pro rata on length, so I don't feel grieved.

A 20ft boat and a 44ft both have equal rights of access to shore and use of facilities hence the same fees are correctly charged .

if you drive a Smart car your kerb side pay and display parking costs the same as a Range Rover .

i too would feel sorry for a couple in a 20 footer, but only because they couldn't get their preferred mooring due to another 20ft boat refusing to close the gap so not only spoiling a couples evening but also depriving local businesses of income

  4. I for one am happy to pay a mooring fee and believe a figure of £6 for overnight would be good , and perhaps a fee of £3 for short stay if not overnighting payable all day would more than compensate for the £1.50 short fall .

This system seems to function well at Salhouse and I'm in no doubt that the management of the Broad looked at how best to maximise their income.

if a sign was erected explaining the charges something like

    Mooring Charges Applicable

in order to continue to provide and maintain the dyke moorings the following fees are payable

Short Stay £3  (moorings to be vacated by 17:00hrs)

    Overnight £6  (max 24 hrs)

  5. Sadly no matter where you go nowadays there is often a bunch of (usually drunk) idiots causing mayhem and ruining others leisure time

As a cabby in a city which attracts scores of young "adults" I see this all too often. Ten years ago it was mainly groups of young men but now The young girls are even worse, a lot of this is down to the 24/7 opening which encourages them to "pre-drink" and not go out till midnight arriving in town already drunk.also the current trend of shots and over the top cocktails doesn't help.

i would love to know how the young of today can afford to get so wrecked so often  (though I believe the use of certain illicit substances is also to blame).

yes have a drink , enjoy yourselves , you're only young once but try and not lose the ability to consider others, your environment and your safety

  6. Do remember you are being taught to pass the test and once passed that's when you learn to drive .

often methods used by instructors seem wrong but they ARE what the examiners are watching for , like moving your head slightly so they realise you're using your mirrors , I'm sure you'll "sail through" and soon be stuck in the M11 or A11 traffic like the rest of us wondering why you didn't catch the train

  7. Thank you for your replies , both offerings although obviously purpose made aren't really what we were picturing , on a previous hire boat (cannot remember which boat sadly) there was a steel? disc with raised lip which the weight sat on(in) , looks like I will have to find a fabricator for one

  8. Popped up Friday evening for a couple of nights, arrived at Wroxham (Well Hove actually) at 21:00 by the time we had loaded Cerise Lady it was already 21:30 so Wroxham Hotel, and Kings Arms had already finished serving food so Kens fish and chips were eaten on the staithe before a swift couple of Ghostships and an early night .

waking to rain on Saturday and up by 07:00 general cleaning , mug of coffee and it was time to wander into town to collect our spare keys from NBS (had problem with Pilot alarm that needed sorting under warranty), guilty pleasure of a couple of bacon and egg McMuffins then a journey by road to collect new fenders from Boulters (old knackered ones now used at home mooring for added protection)

skys now clearing and warm sunshine cheering our day , we decided on a slow cruise via a poodle round Salhouse and Malthouse broads to our intended overnight at Womack Water , rivers fairly quiet except the usual crowding at Ranworth Staithe , and Thurne dyke indicating Rick doing well at his new venture we arrived at a surprisingly quiet Womack staithe  , there were only six boats moored, we actually passed more boats moored on the dyke.

safely moored , Kate having to stretch her far too short legs to reach the step used to enable stern mooring until we decide whether or not to remove the bathing platform , we were settled in by 12:45 and intending to watch the world go by and relax . Met Buffalo Bill and his good lady and watched the usual comings and goings at Womack far too many (mainly HW boats) arriving at full pelt before deciding to move on (as they can't physically see a pub I assume) before the heading gradually filled up by 17:00 . Spotted the beautiful Nipper arriving looking magnificent , what a stunning lady !!

our evening was spent in the Kings Arms , always one of our favourites, where Kate and I had an excellent 8oz rump @£12.95 My only winge being why do pubs insist on serving food on a wooden board ? What is wrong with a nice clean round plate!!!! ?

there was a birthday in the pub which meant that they had live music , big plus for us and if you see the band Black Dragon advertised they are very good they cover rock from the 60's to the modern day. 00:00 we wandered back to Cerise Lady and were soon in deep (in my case Ghost Ship assisted) sleep.

Again up and awake by 0600 , why can I get up with ease on a boat but yet at home have to be dragged from my pit?, we sat and marvelled at our vista read the papers we had on board and supped our early morning hot drinks.

after a visit to Throwers we departed at 08:30 ,target Ranworth for lunch then Hoveton our home mooring before the short (90 mins) drive home .

arriving at Ranworth at 11:00 there were 4 or 5 spaces and we chose one on the side dyke and safely moored , Kate again stretching those little legs of hers.

relaxing on the green I noticed the sailing yacht that had been occupying the stern/side mooring at the end moving off so quickly hopped aboard , untied and poodled in to the space so as to allow side on access, all the while Kate was wondering why I was leaving  whilst she was still ashore.

A stroll to the floating nature centre and was soon time for lunch , just a half of Humpty Dumpty as would be driving later.

departing a full Ranworth at 15:30 we made our way home , river a bit busier with day boats buzzing around like wasps and just as annoying , undertaking at max throttle then changing direction and steaming full ahead on the wrong side of the river .

Swan corner in Horning ,the usual Sunday suicidal Topper sailies seeing how close they can get before either your or their nerve gives, an uneventful cruise back to Brimbelow road , cleaned and put Cerise Lady to bed till next weekends visit .

all in all a fantastic weekend , wonderful weather and people , sadly no pics this time I left my phone in the car , sorry.

  9. Have hired twice in the last five years with Brooms , as they knew we had been hiring for 20+ years the handover was at the best minimal .

our friends had their first ever hire last year on a Broom Captain and Mike is the type that asks numerous questions often ones that the answer is tbh obvious, he was on the river 30mins after arriving at the boat yard so I would presume the handover is not comprehensive

editted to add that kate and I were shown the dash controls for the mudweight (according to Kate and she NEVER forgets )
