Given that there is a distinct shortage of available space, the only alternative would probably be for the BA to take the lease on the ‘quiet’ moorings and get them up to the required standard.  The main issue is their proximity to the riverside properties and the potential for noise nuisance that would surely follow, with after hours running of engines etc.

That would make to much sense for the BA ,but we can all live in hope.:default_pirate:

  2. So short of getting rid of the bridge, putting a cut in, is there any thing that can be done to increase moorings before the bridge?Just seems to me that the priorities are the wrong way round.

As it’s been reported that the great temple of tat has all their Christmas merchandise out already, I fully intend to give the place a very wide body swerve anyway!!  I’ll have to send the wife in to buy my cake . . . . . . . .although that could have disastrous consequences for my bank balance!

I might have to sneak in the exit to get to the bakery!! :default_biggrin:

My wife and son went in on wednesday, i stayed on the boat, they did well, only 2 carrier bags, but there were some cakes that were lovely !!:default_biggrin:   Kevin

The reason it was empty probably has something to do with the bridge.

Yes i get that but as there are so few moorings the other side my point is cannot something be done for the majority of us, who unlike Griff and BA , who are no longer unable to get under the bridge? If you dont get a space at the Broads Authority moorings then the only option is HW at £20,and thats assuming there is space.

  5. Yes Griff is right, i knew it wouldnt be long before the right answer came along. As Heron was talking about Hoveton, the park is in a right state, large parts of it fenced of,as the so called Capital of the broads, shouldnt the council be making more effort to keep it looking good?

As for Potter,is there any thing the BA can do to make it more visitor friendly for private boats, now we have lost the quiet moorings? Herbert Woods can only take so many visiting boats,if it wernt for Lathams is there any point to a visit?

  6. So i took the dog out for his early morning walk yesterday along a stretch of river that i hadnt walked for years and wow, where was this wonderful place?Just perfect quay heading, room for abour 20 boats, large grass banks, picnic tables, newly planted trees, benches, and even cycle racks. Not one boat moored there, was i dreaming? No it actually existed,so where is this little part of paradise in "The Broads National Park"?Answers on a post card please, i know it wont take you long, but it got me wondering if the broads authority needed to get its priorities right as i walked back to the boat that was moored cheek to jowel with every body else, ot the alternative was to pay £20 for overnight stay.

I believe that that Ricky has taken over the lease on the farm side of the Dyke, to prevent them from being turned into private moorings.  They’re free until 16:00, but chargeable after then.  Pricing details here:

Also people need to remember that the Lion was nearly lost to us all, and the moorings as before Rick took it over it was very nearly gonna be turned into Flats.

It so I headed to potter heigham, just in time to see Judith M preparing to transit the bridge ( they made it just) at 6'2.5", I was 1/2 " too tall (and with the river height still rising I wasn't going to risk not getting back.) Anyway I missed their transit as all the moorings were full, and I was mooring up in HW's, only to find it was a turnaround day. (Every day is except for Wednesday and Thursday apparently) anyway I needed fuel, so i filled up 32 litres £59 odd.

Then popped across the road to Latham's to see if they did radio's, no, nor alarm clocks apparently.

Back aboard and set sail for wroxham (Roy's would have radio's - and they did not disappoint).

Up to wroxham, fairly uneventful journey, except for being overtaken every time I slowed to the speed limit. I had the canopy down anyway, so dropped the mast down as I passed wroxham broad. Into wroxham and straight through the bridge (6'9" no problem). Then into Roy's for the radio, Roy's DIY for some other bits, and sausage and chips from the chippy.

Back to the boat to eat my chips, and it started spitting, as I was going to be headed back through the bridge I didn't bother with the roof, so got wet. Through the bridge again and got wet again then it was just a chug down the bure to the pumping station, where I have just arrived and moored up, a lot of traveling,

Rain has started up again, so roof up, time for tea.

Hi Grendel nice to meet you at HWs amongest all the turnaround chaos! You were lucky to escape when you did, we were asked to pay a visitors mooring fee,

    Regards Kevin

Growing up Norfolk boating holidays with Blakes were out annual family holiday. Usually in October we preferred wooden boats from Herbert Woods as they were warmer! (remember the Light boats?). As a young married couple 40+ years ago we hired a 2 berth sailing boat from a Stalham boatyard (can't remember which one). The boat was very basic - no hot water and an over the side loo. Being part of a network of boatyards we were able to call in at many yards to exchange an ice pack for our cool box (no fridge), use the boatyard loos and showers and moor for free.

With modern boats many of these things are no longer needed but it would still be nice to see the A flag flying in lots of places and know you'd be made welcome.

We've recently returned from a holiday on the Thames and had a lovely boat from the former Blakes boatyard of Kris Cruisers. Kris Cruisers were great - service was excellent and I would recommend them. What was sad was that the network of Thames boatyards is gone. Moorings were not as easy to find as I remembered and places to have the boat's tanks pumped out were limited.

Perhaps one day an association of linked boatyards might re-emerge. I hope so.

Ah yesi remember the light boats very well!My dad took me to the boat show at Earls Court to view HW new boat,Silver Light with a sliding centre cockpit canopy. He hired ti for that summer boating holiday, such a great boat, and of course the ice blocks, how could you forget them, fond memories.         Kevin

I’m berthed up next to Peter Sabberton. Now retired. He used to race on Oulton Broad. His son now runs Sabena  Marine and is on with building a boat to break the world water speed record

    Griff

Ive seen his boat in his wet shed at wroxham, the last i heard he was waiting for 2 jet engines to power it ,He was confident of getting the record, his major concern was stopping the boat at the end  of its run!!:default_trophy:               Kevin

Yeah, it’s been a good holiday Ray.  Sad to be going home this weekend in one sense, but now most schools have broken up, silly season starts in earnest next week and it’s probably best to enjoy our weekend on the southern rivers for a couple of months.

There’s always one . . . . and we found two of them yesterday!   It’s such a shame that a few inconsiderate hirers create so much ill feeling between some owners and hirers.  I guess it’s just the way of the world - a general lack of respect  by some for others and their property.

Hi Malcolm, we had an almost identical incidend at Sutton, whilst in the hotel having a meal, one of Ricos old bath tubs decided to move our mooriing lines so he could squeeze into a gap that just wasnt big enough. So we were touching and my hull had been damaged. Of course they denied all knowledge, when i challenged them about moving my mooring lines, they said a bloke outside the pub said it would be all right!!Luckily i had before and after pictures of the gap.Richardsons were very good about having the repairs done, but it does make you wonder?

Those of you whose children/grandchildren still want to spend time on the boat, make the most of it. Both our kids and grandkids have outgrown it now and we miss them. especially the grandkids when they were little they were so much fun. Fond memories of Mollie aged about 4 at the helm  of our Fairline Mirage and making a pretty good fist of it {with Granddad's surreptitious supervision} waving enthusiastically to passing craft. It seemed as  if one minute we were shopping in Toys R Us and the next we were springing for prom dresses!

Couldnt agree more Carole, where do those years go? We cant wait for our first holiday with our 2 grandkids on Moonlight Shadow in August, then a more slightly relaxing cruise in september with our son.!

There's basically nothing wrong with the Ferry and when we moored at Ferry marina we used it often as it was so connvenient. It may not appeal to beer aficionados, wouldn't know about that as neither Tony or I are  remotely interested in beer. Obviously the food comes nowhere near fine dining but then you wouldn't expect it to,  but what was on offer was well cooked, good value and of acceptable quantity unlike some "fine dining" establishements! The service was good too. Whereas at the new Inn we were shown to a table that seemed to have one leg several inches shorter than the others and pointing this out to the waitress resulted in a beer mat being tossed on the table accompanied by a shrug of the shoulders. The room itself didn't look very clean and the food  when  served was distinctly unappealing.

We are just disappointed in the New Inn compared to what it used to be under the management of Ann.With 2 young grand kids in tow we will give the Ferry a go, we sampled the sandwiches, the menu looks good, the kids will be amused, hopefully, and its close to our boat moorings. If the New Inn raises its game, got my doubts as its now part of a chain,we will be back but not at the moment and not at Christmas.:default_beerchug:

Any decent eatery in that immediate area will be most welcome. That's what we felt the lack of during our season on the northern broads 2019. We never ate anywhere  there that has us saying" That was brilliant we'll be back". And believe me we  tried a few! The ferry inn was as has been said a typical resort with no pretence of being anything else, the Swan disappointing and not worth the cost, the new Inn scruffy and seedy with poor service and equally poor food, we never tried the fish restaurant in Horning because Tony doesn't like fish. I believe the New Inn has improved under new management so can't comment on it's merits now. But I can't help thinking they're all catering for a transient customer base and what they offer reflects that. The South being that bit less commercial may be a better option for eateries. Come back the Yare! All is forgiven!

    Carole

We were in Horning last weekend, the New inn used to be our go to pub for meals, although it has improved recently we thought the menu was very limited, no kids menu! and a fish and chip van in the garden close to the moorings. After a absence of 20 odd years we tried the Ferry and was pleasantly surprised,at least there was a kids menu.
