  1. John K - two things about the blooms.
A bl***y good storm with a lot of rain really does help and nearly always ( always? ) in the Upper Thurne these outbreaks coincide with low water caused primarily by lack of rainfall but also the increase in salinity. Hickling and Horsey are affected by salt water incursions through the water table being so close to the sea and this and other factors usually have some part to play.
The UEA have done a lot of work on this and it seems hydrogen peroxide will help - what will the Essex girls do??  Overall whenever the next outbreak occurs expect to see a lot of "white" fish!!

    Thanks for that.
I’m not sure about anything else in the Broads but fish (well koi) seem pretty tolerant of hydrogen peroxide.

  2. You see one of the things that the ecologists forget to mention is that, following work in phosphorus removal in the 80's and 90's, phosphorus levels decreased, as did the frequency of algal blooms.

Interesting stuff. What did they do?

  3. Thanks everyone. Some great tips there.
    Just a few points.
It’s far from my first boat but will be my first cruiser.
Mooring is sorted but space is limited.
I might be able to move before the end of the year but I’m not sure yet.
It will be kept near PH so if it won’t go under I’ll be halving where I can go with it.

  4. I’m thinking of getting something like this ....

    One double berth

Basic cooking facilities (ok, I admit I just want to make coffee)

    Toilet.

Small enough to moor next to a riverside property. I don’t know berth measurements.

    Preferably inboard diesel or electric.

    Ideally fits under PH bridge.

I don’t know where to look or what to look for.

    Any advice gratefully received.

  5. A few years back when there was all the talk of stopping the usage of ‘cherry’ (red diesel) in leisure craft I was wondering whether buying one of the Maxxum sports cruisers was worth a punt (you’d save about 1/3 vs. the diesel equivalent), as it happens, glad I didn’t as the rules never changed, but I do still love a big engined ‘small’ boat.
The US ‘lake’ boats do have a certain appeal

If the rules had changed I might be able to buy petrol on the broads without travelling two hours or more
By Great Lakes standards this one performs quite well in a chop. I had a SeaDoo Jet Drive boat before this one and whilst the jet boat was faster I couldn’t live with the Ebbtide (this one) if there was any swell at sea.

  6. I’m a big fan of sports boats, and I wouldn’t sweat it, you wouldn’t have joined up here if you were of the mentality that didn’t fit in!
What’s ‘under the hood’ as they say?

    Thanks again!
No, I absolutely try to do the right thing. The only people I will let drive it at speed have passed RYA powerboat level 2 and the only people that can tow with it have passed a BWSW qualification (to be fair the second part is a BA rule anyway).
It’s got a V6 petrol 220 hp Mercruiser stern drive. I carry a lot of Jerry cans

  7. Since I appear to have been outed .....
    What are people’s views?
The BA / ERSA rules seem quite tight on skiing / wakeboarding (as they should be in my opinion). But I’m really keen to not annoy people and if there are extra things I can do to make life a little easier for cruisers etc I’m keen to do it.

  8. My boat is designed to be open which makes it a little chilly in the winter months.

So we can use it year round I got Bailey & Stone to make me covers that attach to the bimini top.

I went down to see the new covers today and am very very impressed with the quality of their work and design.

I was thinking of trading the boat in but they’ve done such a good job I’ll be keeping it for the foreseeable.

  9. Sorry for the newbie question but is that why Breydon gets shut to hire boats?

Broads boats can get blown out of the channel in high winds?

I’ve only ever crossed it in good conditions or in a powerboat.

  10. I’m spending a lot more time driving than I’m used to or like these days (I used to do a lot years ago but don’t now) so my pet hates are ...

Drivers who cut in at the front of queues rather than waiting for their turn like everyone else. There are certain makes of car that seem to do this more than others but I’m way too new here to get drawn into that.

Lorries that overtake each other when they have a 0.1 mph speed advantage. Why can’t the one being passed slow down a little or better yet the overtaker live with a 0.1 mph speed reduction?

Cars that you pass and speed away from catching you up in traffic and tailgating you as though you’re holding them up.

    That’ll do for now
