  1. Management Speak!

I hated ‘Management Speak’ and always took the p*** whenever I could. Apart from playing the standard ‘Management Speak Bingo’ as we listened to the latest muppet with an ology down from HQ to gain ‘operational experience’, I had a ‘Management Speak Matrix’ that consisted of 3 columns of 9 random words, such as “holistically’, “horizon”, “cloud”, integrated”, “operational”, “forward”, “command”, “relief” etc.

Once a file or report was completed and checked, I would ask a colleague for a three digit number, and using that number would pick three words, one from each column. For example, 258 might pull out “holistically”, the second word from column 1, “integrated”, the fifth word from column 2 and “operations”, the eighth word from column 3. My challenge was to then get the meaningless phrase “holistically integrated operations” into the report somewhere. Over the years only one senior manager ever asked what I was talking about. Great fun!

I think you’re being a bit unfair there.
If you took a helicopter overview of the situation and did a bit of blue sky thinking you’d see the synergy that could be leveraged at this time.

  2. I realise this sounds like a stupid question. Indeed, perhaps it is. But that never stopped me before

So if the height boards say six foot under say Potter Heigham bridge what does this actually mean?

It can’t be six foot at the highest point of the bridge can it?

If it did then no six foot air draft boats could get under it could they?

Because they’re going to be six foot high for maybe three or four feet wide aren’t they?

But then it can’t be the lowest point because that touches the water

So many questions! Apologies if this has already been discussed.

  3. As someone who struggles with the written word and can't read a book without yawning after one page, I have no problem with the Americanisation of English, there is so much that to myself makes no sense with English, you cannot learn it by rules as for every rule there is many an exception.  Why do we insist on putting a 'U' in the word colour when color works just fine? Why do we need so many spellings for 'there' when it's the context of the sentence that defines its meaning one spelling would have done for all.
    Sorry I know i'm a heathen.

That’s an interesting point of view.
I know I disagree but I can’t come up with a good reason why
Maybe it’s about the loss of British identity. I have no problem with any race coming here and causing change over time in the language but I do object to us just adopting another nation’s language.
I once was on an internal flight in the US and a lovely American lady was surprised at how good my English was for a non American person
I don’t disagree over things like there, they’re, their etc and my comprehensive education in the 70’s didn’t teach me what a verb, noun, adverb etc was (and I still don’t know). It’s a horrible language but it’s our horrible language

  4. I’m really interested to know if folk think these things matter or should we just let our language deteriorate?

    Deteriorate - no.
    Evolve - yes.
The saddest part for me is that English will become American English in a few years. Now that’s deterioration

  5. Wikipedia says ....

    Screw thread
Per ISO 1222:2010, the current tripod screw thread standard for attaching the camera calls for a 1/4-20 UNC or 3/8-16 UNC thread. Most consumer cameras are fitted with 1/4-20 UNC threads. Larger, professional cameras and lenses may be fitted with 3/8-16 UNC threads, plus a removable 1/4-20 UNC adapter, allowing them to be mounted on a tripod using either standard.

    Other websites seem to agree.
I have no knowledge of the subject but woke up early so spent a bit of time Googling it.

  6. My point is that in days gone by we could all use the word "Christmas" and celebrate "Christmas" freely without any fear of causing offence to anyone.  The subject would not even merit a discussion.

When “we” invaded England from Northern Europe a while ago I’m not sure the local residents would have agreed as we displaced them into Wales and Cornwall
Joke very much intended. Offence causing definitely not intended.

  7. If your referring to Potter Heigham I think you will find that is now administered by the Broads Authority and they should be able to answer your question.

  8. I just want to understand the rules / expectations. I did google it but couldn’t find much information.
We’re buying a cottage with no access by car but there’s parking across the river which other cottage owners seem to use very near a public staithe.
Would it be fair to leave a small dinghy at the staithe when we’re not there?
Should we only leave the dinghy at the staithe when we’re staying at the cottage but going out by car? So take the dinghy back to the cottage when we’re going home.
    That sort of thing really.

  9. We wakeboard on Breydon (well I say we, I drive the boat).
When recovering a boarder you kill the engine as they’re getting on close to the prop.
With no drive you’re very soon out of the channel in some conditions.
It makes me very nervous, I hate being without power. I miss my jet drive

  10.
I have been reading the comments and I am with you. I don't want banning before I get access to the jokes.
    :default_badday:
Wrote another ten lines then deleted them.

    So jokes are ok.
    But religion not.
    So are religious jokes ok?
    You start

  11. Religon is a subject better avoided on a nice friendly forum like this . I've said enough on the matter already.

You’ve convinced me not to post.
Other than the post to say I’m not going to post DOH.

  12. Wish you best of luck.
    Very jealous.

Would definitely recommend Goodchilds Marina at Burgh Castle (not Burgh Castle Marina) for you.
They’re used to dealing with systems on big boats (they build pilot boats). They have a big boat lift. They’re extremely helpful. Just off Breydon (which has no speed limit) so very easy to get to the sea.
I keep my ski boat there and they’ve done all sorts for me, VHF, fish finder, fitted NMEA device all very professionally done at a good price. They’re even happy to organise stuff for you with other people (BSS and covers for me so far)

Can’t recommend them enough (you may have picked up on that )

  13. My husband was with EE and he changed to 3 but he hasn't found either one to be as reliable as my O2 connection.

I like O2 as a company (mostly) but EE does seem to have the best overall coverage if survey reports are to be believed.
I also had to take EE to the ombudsman a few years ago to recover £1200 roaming charges for six hours in Hong Kong airport! So I’m not keen to go back (even though the mi-fi stuff has worked well).
    I think you’ve convinced me.
