I've once or twice cycled to the shops locked my bike up outside and then inadvertently walked home... It's the next morning when I wonder why my bike isn't in the shed that I remember. :default_coat:

I think you will find that was a pub not a shop! :default_biggrin:

As I said, our judges seem to think we should be allowed to kill ourselves at will.

I'd agree with that, the main word being ourselves, I'm big enough and ugly enough to play with matches and pointy things without blaming someone else if I hurt myself doing it, as long as I don't hurt anyone else doing it what is the problem.

We spend far too much time telling folk "you can't do that you might get hurt", just tell them "if you do that you might get hurt" and let them decide.

  3. If you just got the boat and it all works I would hold back on too many upgrades for the first season, boats can always throw unexpected expenses at you and they may be the ones that stop you using it till sorted, use the boat for a while first then you will prioritise where to spend first, you may get used to some bits and leave them as they are.

It's so easy to get carried away with a new toy.

And make sure you know if your gauges and senders are european or american resistances, the figures are in the asap catalogue for reference, looking at your avatar I'm guessing bmc engine and european gauges.

what did you forget to bring with you?

The keys several times, 50 miles up the A11 and realise they are still at home!

That's why it's good to have a spare stashed somewhere on the boat accessable from outside.

  5. I think it was pbo that did a rope cutter test with a prop in a tank and various different ropes and cables to see which performed best, it may save you a dunking sometime.

If that's correct then why omit the authors name ? There is no where in that post that state's with permission or not or who wrote it .

"A letter has been sent to the BA pointing out the dangers and I reproduce it below with permission. "

Yeah yeah copied from 'another forum' but you get the jist, if I was to do the same I would leave the name off too, can you confirm permission or not please JM before this becomes an inter forum squabble.

I too am of the view when something is posted on open forum it becomes open knowledge and fair game as long as no one else's credit is taken.

  7. Spring tides will give best clearance at LW as well as least clearance at HW, average HW means sod all and should never really be used and isn't on proper charts, they use LAT which is lowest astronomical tide as chart datum, the weather can make it lower than this but only on exceptional circumstances.

A northerly or easterly wind will generally give higher levels as it pushes the tidal bump around the coast quicker, low pressure also lifts the water, a southerly wind can hold the tide back and give lower than predicted tides.

Also factor in BA shows fixed bridges at yarmouth the same as haven bridge the same where ordanance survey show haven as higher at MHWS so they do not all sing from the same sheet, I trust OS more than BA, BA never even got close to helping us win a major world war.

BA tide tables do not use chart datum as zero as normal rational people do so be aware of the differences.

I'm not about to give any actual figures to any of the above as I've been in the pub too long and not going to be liable to your roof damage..... :default_beerchug:

P.S. I hope even a small percentage of this makes sense, even good spelling will be a bonus to me!

I for one, being an idiot hirer (sorry Bill) will not want to read in the EDP about a mishap....

I would rather read about it in the edp that anywhere else as it will be sooo much more exciting in the edp than it will in real life, it will be like most peoples facebook profile.

  9. I share the view of Donnygeoff, I'm all for taking risks if you choose to do so and accept the outcome as your own doing and take what fate deals you, I also enjoy reading the darwin awards.

I don't see messing about on a medium we can't stand on, we can't breathe, and can't always survive the temperatures as being the safest of hobbies anyway but we still do it, I'm a poor swimmer but rarely wear a lifejacket even at sea, my choice/my risk/my loss when I make the wrong choice.

And from an anglers point of view after the event the river may be well ground baited, doesn't help me as I don't fish.

  10. I had breakfast at the bell at st.olaves and that was fine followed by a long walk with the mut in the woods.

I've never sampled it myself but I've heard the brekkie at surlingham ferry is one to ruin your dinner and weight watchers record too.

The Broads is unsuitable for swimming.

For someone just going in for a dip from their hire boat at the side of the yare that is probably very true, an organised event in the right place with safety supervision water checks and properly risk assessed  I would say it's perfectly suitable for swimming, it's got water what more do you need?

Wether it is in the right place or time I'm not getting involved in as I can't be bothered with the tit for tat barneys.

  13. My hound has a petfloat which works well but we had to adjust it underneath as wasn't very 'todger friendly', he is a bit of an odd shape as he's a fairly big dog with short legs which doesn't help.

We shortened the strap underneath and re-stitched so he is comfortable in it.

Due to the different shapes and sizes of muts I don't suppose it's easy to size for all.

  14. Considering most boat owners add a quid to their toll payment and get the BA tide booklet you probably won't find that many takers for the basic tide functions, I find for my regular haunts I tend to adjust times automatically without thinking much about it.

Without a built in offline tide table I wouldn't bother, the spiny wheel jobbie is useful and easy to clip to the tide book.

  15. That's the one thanks guys, once printed twice and laminated with a bit of cutting out and pinning they work a treat, my last one looks a bit dog eared to say the least.

Sorry Jamie or Bill I'm gonna use it anyway..... Not selling obviously.

  16. I seem to recall someone doing a tide time calculator consisting of two printed wheels years ago, does anyone have an image of one kicking around?

May have been hamiltons or similar that did it.
