  1. Even our vending machines at work take card or Apple Pay.
To be honest, with no minimum payment and a high maximum, even your phone and watch has the ability to make payments cash lives in my wallet gathering dust.
But knowing how rubbish internet connection is on the Broads, cash is king for on bank payment

  2. Now I pootle along at 4 mph pretty much everywhere, mainly due to a/ im tight and b/ she seems comfortable at 1500 revs.
But now I feel less guilty about leading a train from Great Yarmouth to Acle.
Here’s to life at 4 mph

  3. I don’t know about BA, but in my game, the highways, costs have not just shot up but shot up in multiples.
From fuel to costs of steel. Type one and two hardcore material have doubled in price in a month.
So the BA not only going to put up the toll, they are going to have to be very picky about what they do.

  4. Oh and no, your hot water isn’t a cooling aid. It’s plumbed to the engines primary circuit that circulates in the heat exchanger. That bit cools the exhaust and the engine coolant before taking heat away down your exhaust. Providing that is you have the usual set up

  5. Won’t add anything to us boaters other than flats with a view.
worked on too many of these developments in London, Norwich and the medway that they simply don’t add much except to those that can afford to live there. Even then the place becomes a dormitory town. Bars and like may spring up but it’s at a dangerous tidal flow.
As a side note, beware any river side developments hoping to improve the lot of the boating community because they just don’t. Nor do they add much other than council tax to the local economy. Did a job once and the selling point was views over a cricket ground. Within a year the residents was lobbying the council to restrict the practice and playing of cricket to very specific times and the club to provide collapsible sight screens

  6. Our ex hire had a fabricated fuel tank as well as a hot water tank.
in that regard each boat may be different?
I found the panels it was hiding behind and measured it.
it came out to around 45 gallon or 200 litres

my engine is a bmc 1.5 and you won’t get me doing more than 4 in a 35 Bermuda.
I get around 9 miles to the gallon but it has been said. It really depends on helms style

  7. All about visibility.
I once had some nut job swim out from a pumping station on the Ant, lost in the glare from the sun on the water, coming from behind a moored boat while I was abreast another boat coming from the other direction.
Total luck I didn’t hit them. Only knew about it as I went past.

I know that money is a rude word, but wouldn't it be a good idea to install 'go back' sensors like they do for oversize trucks on road bridges?

They take a lot of maintenance. I know because I look after the ones in the Dartford tunnel approaches. Anything from spiders to dirt block the sensor. Even a physical barrier don’t do it due to some always think your lying about the height.

  9. Which direction do most get stuck?

I could be over thinking it but if your up north nearly all of the actual Broads the navigation buoys mean little. Barton Broad you can cruise outside of the posts with little pain.
could the novice just think nothing much will happen?

Thanks for the update, much appreciated.

Its sad that another bit of the broads is disappearing. Bit by bit it is eroding ( see what I done there 😜). Especially at a time when staycations are on the up.

A bit investment could see  the broads booming again. I know that is not appealing to some on here, but things just don’t stand still. They either prosper or die.

There is plenty space on the rivers, it’s just the getting your head down that’s the problem!

Totally agree. There are large sections of the commercial Broads I just can’t moor at. I end up bringing my own food and fuel.

Sorry I am going back a few years and yes it is currently closed.

We only borrow a few moments and times that we remember, generations and circumstances move us on. Hopefully the ones that enjoy the moment in the moment will appreciate it.

    Kindest Regards

    Marge and Parge

Congratulations! You have won the internet with that one.

Great couple of lines right there.

But again that would apply to a BMC and not a modern Nanni, where the base engine would have been manufactured in Japan and then marinised in France.

I give up. I was just trying to make a point of know your engine, know your craft and know what bits do what.
it does not matter where it’s made but if a throttle cable comes off, hose clip disappears and you ain’t got two on each end just looking at it won’t help.

That's presumably not a Nanni-engined boat you have, though?

With the Nannis there's a proprietary multiplug for the dash harnesses.

    Spot on.
It’s the good old BMC 1.5 on hydraulic drive.
Fact remains though to get know your engine at least on talking terms.
For instance, a socket set needs to be imperial. The one I had was metric.

If it was a Ricko's swap then they usually will, to be honest. They're generally replaced with an engine swap (along with the whole dash panel and switches) and used to determine service intervals etc.

Possibly but mine wasn’t. Custom dash panel. They used trailer connection plugs for the electrical connections to the engine so swapping out a defective unit was a lot easier.
This I was told is what they did back in the day. Better than trying to work on the engine in situ if a major fault was suspected. I again was told, that a swap could be done in under an hour
Indeed, thanks to Paul and the lads, that’s what they did when my motor gave out just after buying it.
I guess they made note of the hour meter reading

  15. Having an ex hire myself here’s a few thoughts.
join a breakdown service and get yourself a boat toolkit
ignore the hour meters age to your engine. It probably won’t relate to your engine. Mine has had its engine replaced several times.
Have a can of the proper oil in the engine bay. And I mean the proper spec oil relatable to when the engine was made.
I find a dab of silicone grease on the weed filter gasket helps in the undoing.
replace the ropes with some good grip ones that is well over specced. I like braided 20mm.
Buy extra rope for more mooring options
poke around the dark corners of the boat to find all the basics. Water pump, bilge pump, heater and heater pipes and get to know where all your through hulls are and how to close them.
find the stern gland greaser and see if it needs topping up.
keep in mind the BSS and make a mental list for compliance. Our outside warning signs have faded.
    and enjoy 😊

  16. I’ve been told a similar thing happened in Cornwall way back when.
A parish beach in a cove that had no shops but was very popular in summer.
A small patch of land becomes available that suits a small car park.
The parish council proposed buying it but the locals are against it.
After all, what do they get out of it? They can walk to the beach, no shops depend on the summer trade and they have off street parking.
Most really don’t want people walking around spoiling the area. Being noisy.

  17. There is a limiting factor here.
Available mooring near places to eat and drink.
Bridge inn at Acle has a load of mooring around it and easy access by road.
Other places, especially in the north are very restricted so how much trade do they get from the river?

We don’t eat out in most areas in the northern broads because simply I can’t moor anywhere near them.
Horning, Wayford, potter and wroxham no chance.
