  1. Diesels liked to be worked hard and if not generally glaze ( fill in) the micro valleys and ridges of the piston bore that help form an oil seal on the piston rings.
Once glazed smoke, oil consumption and harder starting follows. Can’t fix it without a head off glaze busting.
so an engine on the smaller side working hard is better than one this having it easy.

First and foremost I would give them the proper title The Broads Authority give them. Electric Boat Charing Points, then with that in mind I would enquire whether they are on an electric boat and do they need to recharge for propulsion. Beyond that I think its fair game for first come, first served, however I still might have a mind to enquire if they have any special reasons for needing the post. For instance more and more people are cruising with CPAP machines and may need power for a decent night s sleep. Knowing someone with sleep Apnea I would be inclined to share the post with them by letting them plug in later.

However to be fair it rarely is an issue for me as I only normally plug in to a post in the depths of Winter.

good point, never thought of that.

  3. Hi all,

Back from a 7 day break and this point came up.

Cruising into potter, boat in front turns and moors, I came straight in and moor.

The crew disembarks with the power hook up in hand and walks up to the power point just as the bloke from the other boat approaches the pole.

He is empty handed and looks at crew and says " I suppose your going to plug into there now" There was only one spare socket.

    we did

The question is then, is it first come first served?

Do you need plug in hand?

  4. Just to add that by far the biggest hurdle to all these training ideas is "experience"

You cant learn to drive from a book just as you cant helm from a book.

And there is no way any hand over is going to teach you all the tricks and remain viable.

You learn over time, each and every moment adds to the total. Windy weather, rain and nutters on paddle boards.

Its all about the mistakes and how to make these mistakes not end in disaster.

Now, as others have said, its all about the design of the boat to make it easy to use.

Duel helm lock outs with no fail areas. Rope hooks for the mooring lines, rails and handles and doors that don't open out to an unprotected deck. Mirrors even to cover those spots.

Design out as much as you can and what's left should not end a life

  5. I work in live lane motorway situations and one of top lessons I live with is that complacency kills.
I see too many people treat water as friendly when it’s a very good con artist.
water is not our natural element and avoiding it our goal.
I think we sell our past time as peaceful and relaxing and it is most off the time. Except when it isn’t

  6. how about inconsistency?

A lot of the Broads you can venture outside of the markers with no trouble at all. EG, Barton Broad. Or even roam all over most Broads, Wroxham.

Suppose some may see breydon as the same and try to cut corners?

But mostly I see boats flat out, the helm not paying attention, running close to the post, sudden over correction, boat weaves around doing the classic snake pattern.

  7. My company uses electric 4x4's.

You be surprised how much range you lose in winter running heating, battery warmers and lights.

This might be an issue with our boats. The batteries suffer badly near freezing conditions.

so it might not be a case of leave the boat over winter without a power source

  8. Got to add, the lie that foreigners are stealing all our jobs is revealed as foreigners are keeping costs down

cost are beginning to rise rapidly and finding that work force isn’t as easy as it once was especially around the unskilled sector

minimum wage is a joke and seasonal work really don’t appeal to long term plans

firms are bleeding labour as those firms that are big enough to offer better wages just take what they need

im watching skilled engineers joining Amazon on way more wedge while my firm is stuck unable to compete because no one wants the higher price of contracts.
so maybe now we will see the true price of things now we can’t rely on cheaper labour

  9. Getting back to nature and enjoying birdsong should be an option but not a requirement.

I too enjoy sitting out but I have my mobile on charge in the boat.

I've long had the view that not enough attention is being paid to on board power systems.

I've hired boats with a massive bank of batteries and no idea what state of charge is in them.

Install a NASA battery monitor (other makes available) and this tells me what's in, what is going out and how long it will last!

At least give the hirer a fighting chance and stop them being paranoid about running out of power

  10. We needed Sutton staithe last year and they was there when needed. I know it’s obvious but when the dung hits the air mover you might as well be in the North Sea.
Twice we had engine trouble, one of which was terminal and it’s was a relief to see them approaching in a borrowed boat because we was moored in an inaccessible 24hour mooring.
Fact of life here is that getting a tow back still needed time to happen and you can’t magic time and distance.
The second time the service came out via van and got the engine started enough to get us back to our mooring.
let’s be honest. Our engines are getting on a bit and things happen so the peace of mind and the many hundreds of pounds it would have cost to tow us back easily paid for itself.

I think this is the crux of it. Whatever is said and done, we have to pay back the eyewatering costs of Covid.

And it can't just fall on the shoulders of 'rich' people.

Second home owners - you can pay ? ... so how long before they come after "floating" second home owners, ie boat owners ???

It will start with extra river licence fees, then move onto a form of Council Tax for moorings etc. You just wait - careful what you wish for when you say 'the rich must pay more' ...

Nope. Vote loser in their demographic.
note that ni tax hike and income tax reduction plus 180 quid council tax rebate are a boon to those on unearned income.  Rents and pensions (private) will not effected by ni increase and you get to keep more dosh via income tax lowering.
But if you can afford solar and heat pumps plus the required insulation then your quids in.

  12. Fits the Broads image perfectly. The whole family on paddle boards , not over weight , big smiles, clearly enjoying the river and not causing harm to the environment.
in distance, a clone of the said family, all dressed in the latest walking gear pointing at birds, big smiles.

while another clone of said family, cycle past on the latest cycles while happily smiling at each other

Tipping the nod to the same family on a sailing dingy right in the middle of the river waving at everyone

and in the far distance, a polluting monster, scared wildlife fleeing in panic, is a boat. An afterthought

  13. Yup, it’s a bit like holding a door open, everyone seems to charge through.
I also go on the idea that on the boatyard side you have less vision forward and space. Holding position there is entertaining.
Generally, I let a couple through then I go for it.
worse was when a boat stopped to take photos.
    Fruity language was issued

  14. For your first time, I’d go for a flattie or for those weird people, a bathtub.
easy access at all points of mooring, vision (even stern on, just lean out of window) makes this type of boat very user friendly.
seen too many new hands struggling to get off high sides or being in one particular angle to be able to get off to moor.

  15. Circular firing squad.
    the issue is limited space.
As boaters, we are very restricted to areas we can stop.
As anglers, free spaces are rare but more space is available if you fork out and join clubs.
And if times turn tough, more anglers are going to use the 24hr moorings.
Our space just isn’t expanding and what we have got needs protecting because I think the battles for space will grow.
As a hobby, fishing can be a cheap pastime but a major cost is a place to fish.
Free fishing only serves to attract anglers to these spaces to what is a limited resource

Just another example of the aggressive confrontational society we live in, poor boat owners. I watched a crew and fisherman have a right good laugh about mooring up last year at gayes, in the end they all ended up chatting and having a beer. Exactly how it should be,and who on earth carries a can of paint around with them. Sounds more like some random vandalism to me...

And totally ignore the other people complaining of confrontation by other anglers.

I carry all sorts of stuff in my van. Even when I go out fishing.

  17. After dark, silent from some distance going by splatter marks.
Occam’s razor applies here. The simplest explanation applies.
Getting fed up contributing tolls and getting edged out with comments like the Broads is for all.
Nope. Can’t moor up on fishing platforms, can’t moor up here because a mass of paddle boards rafted up.  Can’t moor here because someone prefers fishing from the bank so they will give their craft six feet extra room. Private land taking advantage of public flood defences in order to post signs say no mooring. I know I’m going to be flamed but I really do think the 24hr moorings should be for boats and sailing craft and if you need to fish, do it off your boat. I do.
