  1. I always do my own work on my boat, however, I am an electrical and mechanical engineer so guess I have a slight advantage. Still, sometimes on boats there are areas I proceed with caution and like you, trawl the internet for reference and advice. The only thing I will not touch is gas. I would always consult an Gas Safe engineer to do the necessary tests. If something did go wrong any insurance company would have a field day getting out of a claim, as well as putting lives at danger. The same goes to shore power and mains circuits on boats. If you are not qualified, don't touch it. I have witnessed some very poor electrical installations done by a DIY'ers, they are an accident waiting to happen, again it is peoples lives being played with.

  2. New Year New Forum!!

Very soon some very exciting changes will be happening to the NBN, firstly we have a new line up of moderators and two new team members have joined us who should bring excellent support and input for the challenges ahead.

    The New Team:

    Brian

    Jonzo

    jill_R

    Julz

    Happy Jax 3 (Col)

    Red Rover (Barry)

    Hockham Admiral (John)

    mbird (Mark)

The NBN will soon be going onto a new platform and will bring us all a much brighter, fresher and easy to use forum. It comes at a price but we believe the benefits of this premium product far outweigh the cost. So what are the key benefits?..........................................

    - The Forum will be more secure

    - Easier for members to use

    - Better inbuilt support for mobile devices (ie non Tapatalk users)

    - Chatroom built-in, No logging in separately, as the chat will be a tab on the forum which you can click into.

    - Better architecture means that the tech team can spend more time adding niceties instead of constantly finding and fixing fault.

Jonzo is hard at work in the background preparing this exciting new platform so when we go live, any potential "hic-ups" should be eliminated. The mod team will soon be testing the new system prior to launch and we will keep everyone updated on the progress.

    ***IMPORTANT***

The great news is all existing threads, photos etc.. will be transferred over, however, some people have multiple user accounts and will need to choose one, please PM Jonzo or any mod with your choice as the changeover may delete a duplicate account you would prefer to keep.

With this exciting change we would like to ask all of our members if you are happy with the existing topic areas or have any ideas for new ones, this is the time for a complete refresh and all suggestions will be considered.

  3. If you see a Rickos boat advertised cheaper for the same week we will refund the difference plus 10% (unless booked in the previous year where we just refund the difference) which basically means..

if you book a boat now and the price goes down you get the difference back.

if you book a boat and we do an offer on that week we will refund the difference PLUS 10%

the fuel is at the price at the time of your holiday...

Excellent news Clive, if I was hiring a boat, I know who I would use. :clap

  4. Can you clarify something for me please. Today I was asked was Mike the recent Harbour Master or was he the previous Harbour Master. I dont think I have worded that very well but you know what I mean. Thank you.

    Hi Hylander

Mike was the most recent Harbour Master for Beccles, The Oulton Broad boys have been covering for him since the summer when Mike became ill. Although Mike being Mike still managed to get into the office occasionally whist undergoing treatment.

  5. Yes, a fantastic weekend. Once again well done John & Mary Jane and many thanks for the trip down to the New Inn at Rockland. :clap

The meal at Coldham Hall was excellent and George & Natalie surpassed themselves as usual. The Game Pie was lovely.

  6. Clive, I agree. But the question remains, how does a first time hirer find out whether he is hiring from a good, well known yard, or from a rubbish one?

Simple, go with the hire yards that have good reputations on forums. But you still have to remember no business sets out to provide bad service, that would be suicide. Many Hire yards have been running for decades and this would not be the case with continual bad service.

  7. Naming and shaming is not what this forum is about, yes from time to time all businesses can get it it wrong, but as already said on another thread it is how they act on dealing with the complaint after the event. We always welcome all views when Broadland companys get it right as this gives good options for members to choose based on good experiences. We all have to remember there is two sides to every incident and it would be unfair to name and shame, if any Pub, Restaurant, or boat yard continually provides poor service, it doesn't take long for the word to spread but the NBN is not the place. I am not always saying it is the case but there can also be an element of personal vendetta against a business especially when someone makes a post for the first time and we need to protect against this.

    cheersbar

  8. We had a great time at Beccles at the weekend and it was very nice to catch up with some old friends and meet new ones. Many Many thanks to John & Mary-Jane (Hockham Admiral) for organising the meet and ferrying everyone up the Waveney to Geldeston Locks for Sunday lunch time drinks, even had a sing song on Friday Girl. By the way John "Who the what is Alice" lol!! :clap

In total we had 12 Boats turn up and quite a few members arrived by car. The weather was on our side with only a few very light showers on the Sunday, a total contrast to last year.

I even managed not to fall in this year so kept dry for the whole weekend.

Unfortunately I forgot my camera so hope other members will post a few up soon.

    cheersbar

  9. The Wherry reopened a couple of weeks ago. The main refurbishment was adding bedrooms to the Hotel, although they have opened up the bar areas, so much brighter and nicer views of Oulton Broad.

And the great news is the carvery is still up to the previous high standard :)
