I respectfully disagree Vaughan. BRAG in whatever form is presently the best place to discuss tactics for the wanted reform. Discussion in other places just spreads out the information.

This forum is perfect just as it is; well moderated and good content. Please let us not return to the old BA bashing days. Oh dear, I appear to have run out of ink....:default_gbxhmm:

From someone who has experience of trying this in the past I do understand the issues that BRAG is dealing with right now.

I am not advocating that The NBN take over as THE medium for BRAG IMHO it would not work even if the software allowed it to which I don't believe it can.

All I am asking for is a declaration of intent to support BRAG financially which once again IMHO they are going to need sooner rather than later.

And then they can gauge the true measure of support from us " Little People"

    So do I MT.

To me it seemed to be the only viable option.

Unfortunately I would think that would entail some financial investment.

For us on the outside it's time to put our Hands in our pockets IMHO

Well it's better than The BA with their hands in there 😜

Don't know if it's appropriate to post this but would it be a good idea for us to show our willingness or otherwise to financially support BRAG.

If it is allowed to stand I will be the first to declare that I am willing to make a financial contribution

In the meantime though this forum is still open for posting because it's not embroiled in politics. Continues to be the light relief that most want.

I hope BRAG setup their own forum and continue their good work.

    From their website -

"Dogs are not permitted in the bedrooms upstairs"

    Pretty clear I'm afraid 🐾

That is a change in policy over the last few years then as I have definitely spoken to people who have stayed there with dogs .

Best to give them a ring I think.

If the information above is correct then give Wayford Bridge Hotel a call as they are definitely dog friendly. And are sponsor's of this site

Thinking about it We stayed there on New Year's Eve a few years ago and had our dog with us👍

Now, I'm not NEARLY as old as Wussername but this thread has made me think to the... no, my future on boats.

My feet are numb owing to type 2 diabetes, my eyesight is failing and I suffer from gout. My breath is short and my stamina shorter still. So, how long can I continue "living the dream".

FF might say that I'm already a danger to myself and perhaps even to others, but I'm not yet ready to be a bad influence in an old folks home.

It is my hope that I've got another 10 years at least on Nyx, even if the Fortress has to keep diving in to stop me from drowning. (If the water is too cold, just send the dog in to get me).

I sometimes think of Alan who, although before his time, was taken so suddenly, doing that which he loved. I wonder if I might be so lucky. (Please God, not yet, I've got too much gin on board)

My father gave up boating when he was 82, he just knew when it was time. Two years later he "gave up everything else" much to my mother's annoyance.

So Wussername, I realise you are very VERY old, but I reckon you've got a few years playing in the gutter yet.

Don't worry MM , I only think you are a danger when you are offering to buy me 🍺

I got the only space at about 3.30, but there was quite a few leaving and arriving until 5’ish. There was one space about 6’ish which was taken, so full now…😎

I don't lightly call for regime change for the very fact that you state above. Better the devil you know etc.

During my limited time on The Broads compared to some I have largely been a supporter of The BA and have shook my head in dismay at the many BA bashers who have populated the Broads Fora

But I have felt pushed into my current attitude by the constant above inflation tolls increases compound by this year's blatant money grab and then to add insult to injury attempting a further money grab by charging for 24 HR Free moorings already paid for in our Tolls.

For the record I see you are largely in favour of the mooring charges.

Could you also state your position on the 13% Tolls increase.

I agree that if the BA decided that Ranworth was going to be the only location for a charge then, whilst they shouldn't be charging, in the overall scheme of things it wouldn't be huge. The problem, however, I think Vaughan and others are worried about is that the Ranworth charge will set a precedent for numerous similar mooring charges elsewhere. The fact that most other BA moorings are unmanned wouldn't stop the BA from collecting money, they could either employ somebody to do that if they felt so inclined or introduce a "pay online/by phone" car park-style system.

Couldn't have put it better myself 👍

    Hmm . . .

Yes, you are probably right, although you may not understand why, even if I explain.

I was literally raised on the river, on a houseboat, at a boatyard where, by the age of 14, they called me a "time served" painter and yacht rigger.  Since then I have watched the changing fortunes and seasons of the place I have still come to love more than anywhere I know.  I have seen its good times and the bad ones.  Right now I fear for its future more than I ever have before.  It has been under bad mis-management for several decades and this season I feel that we have finally reached a crisis point.

I seriously believe that this measure of charging for BA moorings will result in a recession from which the Broads as we know them will never again fully recover.  In fact we all should realise that they never fully recovered from the recession of the 80s.  The lessons from that, were never learned by the authorities.

So in that atmosphere It is perhaps understandable that I get frustrated as well as depressed, when I hear so much negativity about all the little things that people think are wrong with it, whilst at the same time seeming to be the lone voice that defends the boating tourism industry - the life-blood of the area - from ill-informed criticism that can easily do serious damage to its image in what is a very fragile market.

But on second thoughts you may be right : why should I bother myself with it?  There will always be those, for whom the facts of a matter just bounce off;  like water off a duck's back.

    And do you know what

    I agree with you

I don't have the background that you have but I do have a love of the Broads.

I also fear that the current management is doing untold harm.

    Never mind.

You have managed to take us off the topic of bark chips versus gravel on a BA mooring and stir up yet more muddy water off the bottom of the broad.

It could seem to me as though that was your main intention.

    Getting a bit punchy 😳

  11. Further to what Vaughan says above.

The boat suitability is a major issue.

The one I quoted at Ranworth was indeed a bathtub type so probably the best for access. 👍

Last year at Oulton Broad Yacht Station I and some friends pulled a man from the water who had fallen in whilst attempting to moor.

I cannot recall the boat type but it was one with high freeboard and had steps like small handrails on the stern for access which had been crushed and were useless.

The helm had done the right thing and had cut the engine and the casualty was clinging to the pontoon when we arrived. It took myself Mrs FF and an able bodied friend to haul him out. He was bleeding from a head wound and was kept in hospital overnight, released the next day. Needless to say no lifejacket 😣

The whole crew although all pretty mobile were in their 80's and experienced hire Boaters.

But IMHO the boat was totally unsuitable.

  12. I will not labour the examples of public transport or the fantastic work done by The Nancy Oldfield Trust.

What I will do is quote an extreme example.

I helped a boat stern moor at Ranworth around 3 or 4 years ago. The crew were all elderly 2 of which were Wheelchair users. The 3rd was the most mobile of them and could get around on his feet with the aid of 2 sticks. To get off the boat he was able to shuffle on his bottom until his feet touched ground then with the aid of his sticks stand up and walk slowly.

Someone tell me that is safe

Moreover can someone explain the thinking of the Hire Company that let them out.

Regular wood chip is a total waste of time as it quickly turns to mush and then mud - accessibility for all is the necessity I guess.

I suppose you need a brush and slippers by the door - most boats have both and it just needs you to bend down! Those with wheelchairs I guess, will appreciate the fact they can get their wheelchair close to the boat

And do you think it's safe to have a wheelchair user on a boat.😳

I know I am going to be controversial now but I do not.

If and when I can't get on and off a boat unaided is the time for me , and anyone with a modicum of sense, to give up boating.

    Incoming expected 🫣
