Going to be a great run in for the top this year again.

Arsenal are on top and rightly so.

    Fantastic football 😁

But there is one club you would not want to be hunting you down.

And they seem to be hitting form at just the right time 😲

  2. In all fairness in all the time I have been using the Broads I have seen very little anti social behaviour.

I also agree with the posting on the other thread from the lady who wrote in to the EDP She has another agenda 😲

  3. Always called Flaked in the MN.

And to answer Mr Surveyor, I have no idea why 😲

The vast majority of mooring lines ( rope) on ships these days are multi platt but as Vaughan says wires are generally right-hand lay so are flaked right handed unless you get a kink in them then you put in a Frenchman which is left handed. No idea about the origin of that term either :default_wacko:

  4. I think we just have to accept that The Broads is not for everyone and we have to be thankful for that.

The overcrowding on The Northern Broads has become worse over the last few years not helped by the closing of so many Hire Fleets in The South.

The constant " hand in your pocket" by so many and not just The BA does not help.

We are contemplating a few days out on The North next week but a lot of our favourite options are not available. The park at Hoveton is in a shocking mess, Neatishead is still closed and of course the daylight robbery at Ranworth is still happening. Don't even mention that dammed bridge 😭

With the moorings closed at Ludham Bridge mooring options are getting worse even this early in the season. It's no wonder that we are spending so much time in The South now during the main season.

I must admit I do not hark back to "The Good Old Days" as I was not a Broads user until the 90's and I can with certainty say I do not miss a petrol engine and gas radiant heating .

I am quite at home in my fairly well appointed floating caravan that even kept us nice and toasty during that cold snap we had in December when England got knocked out of The World Cup. Hooking up to the mains at Acle Bridge was a bonus and just a Thank You to The Staff who switched them on for us then would not accept payment for the overnight mooring ( not everyone has their hand in your pocket) A group of 8 of us enjoyed a cracking meal in great company, 2 boats and the rest by car. The only trick that Phil had missed was that he had booked a party in during the actual match so could not show it in the pub so I had to watch the game in my warm caravan. Don't think I could have managed that with my first 3 boats.

We are already seeing the first consequences of this incident with the enforced introduction of the British Marine QAB scheme as a condition of the Broads Authority hire operators licence.

Without the adoption of the QAB there was suggestion that all Broads cruiser hiring skippers would need to be qualified before taking a boat out.

    What is QAB please?

I assume it's some form of Quality Assurance.

In all reality you cannot compare the two, my experience of the Thames was as a hirer alongside the Broads in the 80s and 90s when even back then the Thames was quite a bit dearer possibly around 10-15% but that`s just from memory, but then operating costs were higher with land values etc.

Apart from the locks there were plenty of town moorings till councils like Reading started closing them, there were also rural moorings till foot and mouth closed them, this seemed to start the decline along with the onset of the cheap Costa package holidays, not sure if Clive`s memory`s stretch back to when Richardson`s bought Maid Boats but he maybe able to shed more light on that.

There are far to many differences between the Thames and Broads to compare the two, with hiring being restricted to the non tidal Thames and very few day boats and no sailing and all the locks manned it was relatively  simple for a novice to navigate, the one down side was in flood or adverse conditions the whole system could be Red flagged effectively shutting everything down.

I don`t know what riverside development has happened above London since then but virtually all the riverside property's in those days were the playground of the rich and celebrity`s.

It is quite likely others may be able to show that it is just as impractical to compare the Broads with other rivers or canals, the Broads are unique and as such so is the understanding of and skills required to manage them hence the Broads Act and all that it should entail, they are much more than a river system but totally different to a National Park.

I didn't think so but could not justify my comments with any experience of the area as never been boating anywhere but The Broads.

Thankfully we have others like yourself and Vaughan who do have this experience and can comment.👍

The Thames has always been far more expensive for many reasons including all the surrounding areas and facilities, it has also lost most of its hire yards over the years.

    Fred

But can you see The Broads going the same way ?

The price of riverside property through the roof so more and more nice riverside flats?

    Just like Norwich?

  8. Oh just back on subject.

There are a few on here who have been witness to my chaotic mooring at Ranworth when I was more interested in showing off our new curtains than actually mooring the boat 🫣

It started as an intended stern mooring that descend into a side on mooring, but with some help resulted in a stern mooring 😄

Thankfully it was winter and plenty of space so not too many who can call out my mooring skills or otherwise.😭

Go on Griff and others 🫣

    I have big shoulders 😳

The costs for owning or renting a Spam Can ( light aircraft) heavily outweigh the cost of owning or renting a boat on The Norfolk Broads . Which is partly the reason I do not fly anymore.

The other one is that my flying time was to get me into the right (and ultimately into the left seat) of a heavy jet.

Thankfully my career path took me down a different route which was better paid and more rewarding.

But it was you that started comparing apples with oranges. 😳

Unfortunately my pedantic nature will not let a little knowledge pass as fact. 😭

  10. Are you talking Freemasons here Floyd?

I must confess I know nothing about them or who is involved.

Have been secret handshaked a few times and have pointedly ignored them and then been very very wary of any future contact. In fact have actively blanked them.

    Not my thing I'm afraid.

    QFE

Atmospheric pressure at aerodrome elevation (or at runway threshold)”

As opposed to QNH or pressure at sea level ( FE Field elevation NH Nautical Height) In most of the civilised world you land at QFE or zero altitude. In the savage places ( who btw invented aviation) you land at QNH so basically your altimeter reads your height above sea level, so if you are 4000 ft above sea level you hit the dirt with your altimeter reading 4000ft in GA ( General Aviation) as opposed to commercial aviation where you have a radar altimeter. And the Ham Shanks at least form some cloak of being civilised 😄

Gosh I am a pedantic bar steward arnt I?🫣

Boating, or rather helming a boat, albeit sail or motor, is never ever, about getting it right.

May I mention a strange analogy, it is with regard to flying an aircraft and I have done that as well although I have to say I am not a pilot.

On an approach, heading whatever, visibility, height, wind, QFR, on a VFR approach (Visual Flight Rules) things go wrong. It would seem to me that one is always correcting a mistake at 800 ft.

Same with boats. Experience does not only tell you how to moor a boat. It also informs you that it is not going how it should. So, you adjust. Calmly. Some do not. Go around, no shame in that. Try again.

Wind, tide, visibility, hazards, all enter the mix.

Therefor it it is never ever about doing it right it is knowing that it is not as it should be,  and what to do about it.

That is experience and you cannot teach that.

Fear not, it comes very quickly and in time you will become a boatman.

You may with justification ask the question. Who are you?

Just an old Norfolk man, nothing special about me I can assure you. All I did was move boats, stern on moorings mostly, all day on turn round day, Oh! and also trial runs.

I have done more stern moorings than any of you in my life.

They were all perfect. The ones that were not were carried out by my mate who looked like me.

Interested to know what QFR is ?

I think I got the rest.

Looking at this post I wonder if Broads Authority has got Lawyers dealing with this problem at the Toll Payers' expense? Ifso they  should. Pay it them selfs

    From where and what money?

National Park Grant, DEFRA handout or from The Navigation budget? Personally as this is a Navigation Issue I think it should come from The Navigation Budget. And it will 😫

Until this issue is resolved (sacked, or made to retire, choose any option) it will cost us Toll Payers.

The question is , Is it worth it ?

    My opinion

    Yes
