  1. Lovely film! The family are on Valentina from the Neatishead Boatyard (seen at start of holiday) - it later became part of the Richardson's fleet. I wonder which wherry yacht it was at Oulton Broad. Carol
  2. I've just found this recent upload to YouTube which I thought might be of interest ... cine footage of a trip round the coast from Kings Lynn to Great Yarmouth and along the River Yare from 1972. Click to watch it on YouTube and read the comprehensive background notes for the trip - but to sum up, there were two boats - an Elysian 27 with a single BMC and a Senior 32 with twin Perkins 4108's. Most of the footage is of the Elysian .... I feel rather queasy now ! Carol
  3. You can also access saved drafts via your Control Panel (link at the top left of the page) you'll find the "Manage Drafts" section on the left hand side. Click on this which will bring up your saved drafts - click "load draft" from the one you want and then either finish it/ edit it and then click submit as normal to post it. Carol
  4. Bumping this up as the BNCT event at Coltishall is this weekend. Keeping my fingers crossed for the weather for them! Carol
  5. News of the award in today's EDP: http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/lowestoft_brewery_wins_coveted_gold_and_silver_medals_at_great_british_beer_festival_1_1474884 Carol
  6. Silver !!!! Only a silver ..... I demand rigorous testing on the winning beer as I suspect they may have been using banned ingredients! A very well deserved award for Trawlerboys ... pure nectar and my favourite pint! Carol
  7. From the Great Yarmouth Mercury today ...... I hope it's not another one of Clive's! http://www.greatyarmouthmercury.co.uk/news/boating_holidaymakers_stuck_under_bridge_at_st_olaves_1_1469163 Carol
  8. I should also add ... Make sure that you are running the latest versions of whatever anti-virus and spyware/malware etc. you use and update them immediately prior to running the scans. Updates are often issued several times a day to try to catch the latest variations of the nasties! Carol
  9. Richard posted up a message on Facebook last night to say that it was up and running again ... however, I just checked and all does not seem well again. The thread started about the hacking seems to have become scrambled. I will keep a check on Facebook, but for the time being I would advise that you do not attempt to visit the site. My friend had problems with a Trojan trying to download on Tuesday night which, he thinks, he has now got rid of. I ran full anti-virus and Malware scans yesterday which have came back clean, but would advise anyone who attempted to access yesterday or today to run full scans of their own system to be on the safe side. I will only visit once they are certain that it is safe to do so. Carol
  10. Ok, for the non Facebooker's .... Gary has confirmed that the NBF has been hacked but that it is all in hand. He says that it should hopefully be fixed this evening. Carol
  11. It might be best to avoid discussion of the merits and faults of the various forums on here - in the past it has led to some unpleasantness and will understandably result in this thread being removed. It does none of the forums any favours when it all starts to descend into a bun fight! However, I'm sure that admin will be happy to allow a simple update thread on the situation at the NBF, given the apparent severity of the situation. Carol
  12. Firefox is blocking the NBF this morning - it's sending up a notice to say that it has been reported as a hacked site. I hope that Richard manages to get it sorted. In the meantime, hopefully Gary or Richard will post an update of the situation on the NBF Facebook page soon. Carol
  13. Go on Howard ... you know you want to! I don't expect I'll be tweeting too much but can at least link to blog updates etc. so it might raise awareness of the archive a bit. More than anything it's a means to follow others on there as I had been checking out some of the F1 related tweets regularly anyway so this just makes it easier for me ..... I suddenly seem to be following an awful lot of local breweries mind you! As someone who's never really been interested in this social networking thing, it's surprising just how many Broads based businesses, charities and organisations have a Twitter presence, so it may be useful ..... or just another distraction! Now .... what's Britney got to say today ...... Carol

  15. Yikes ... I've joined the social networking revolution and you can now follow Broadland Memories on Twitter should you be so inclined: https://twitter.com/norfolkmemories Now all I have to do is work out how to use it! Carol
  16. Finally, a new addition to the list arrived over the weekend - a nuthatch. I have never seen one of these before although there is suitable habitat for them nearby. Kev spotted it on Sunday morning, although I missed it as I was in the bathroom at the time. I was pleased to see it yesterday afternoon and managed to grab a photo. As it's on maximum zoom it's not the greatest quality but at least I have a record of it now. They are apparently the only bird in the UK which will make it's way down a tree trunk head first. Like everything else it made a beeline for the sunflower hearts (is there anything which doesn't love sunflower hearts?), but also had a little bit of fat ball. I think the fact that this feeding station is on top of an old tree trunk means that it's perfect for the nuthatch to clamber up and down. He won't get onto the feeders but leans across to grab what he wants. It's quite a small bird and has a very pastel orange under-belly with an almost woodepecker-like long, pointy beak. Very pretty! Carol
  17. The bad weather this year has meant that I haven't had the chance to take many photos of the birds in the garden but I thought I'd post up a few of those which I have managed to capture between the rain. Birds have been here in abundance at the two feeding stations - it seems to be easier for them than searching for their own food when it's so wet! Babies have been noticeably fewer and spread out over the last few months rather than having the huge mass in the early spring which has been the norm in the past. Again, I can only put this down to the awful weather conditions. First up is one of our resident pheasants. We've had two males in the garden this year - a loner who had a terrible limp for a while but seemed to recover, and this handsome chap who had two females in tow all spring. Here's one of this years babies ..... most people I've shown the photo to haven't got a clue what it is, but it's actually a baby robin. We have at least two pairs in residence but haven't seen their offspring at the feeders before. This is one of our more unusual visitors - a turtle dove which have very beautiful markings. It was only in the garden for a short while and was not seen again. They must live fairly locally though as this is the second year that one has made a brief appearance. We were really chuffed to start getting bullfinches at the feeders this year. We have seen the occasional male in the hedges in the lane, but they haven't come into the garden before. This male was the first to arrive a few months ago, followed soon afterwards by a female. Last week there were three adult males, the adult female and a juvenile female in the garden. Our goldfinches started to increase in a similar manner to the point where we ended up with a flock of about 50 of them during the winter! Meanwhile .... I've been a bit concerned that someone has been tapping our phone line recently ...... Carol
  18. Funnily enough Howard, I thought of you when I spotted it !! It dates from the late 1960s but I have to confess that I had never heard of the names of this particular hire fleet before and whether the then owner of the Waveney Yacht Station boatyard ever did have his fleet of eighteen "Whitbread" cruisers I don't know. Craig's database lists just three of them - Gold Top, Trophy and Forest Brown - but as they were an independent yard at this time then he may not have the necessary literary references to identify the entire fleet. At least two of the Elysian 34's joined Richardsons fleet in the early 70s at part of the Fairway class, as did the Freeman 26 "Forest Brown" which became Helmsman - maybe Clive's dad will remember more about this particular fleet? Just another of those quirky little bits of Broadland's history! I hope it's OK to put a direct link here to the specific article on the blog as, obviously, it will disappear down the list on the front page as I add more posts. As always with anything I mention on there, I'm always keen to receive more information or memories people may have. http://www.broadlandmemories.co.uk/blog/2012/07/booze-cruisers/ It could have been worse .... they might have been named after Watneys offerings!! Carol
  19. I've uploaded the two films from Barry over the last couple of days. The first is rare colour 16mm cine footage of the Broads from 1939 when Barry's parents holidayed with other family members on "Golden Eagle" which was hired from :Leo Robinson's yard at Oulton Broad. Sadly, the film suffered from some water damage over the years, but the colour itself actually survived remarkably well. Lots of footage of the boat itself plus film of Johnson's Provisions store and the Bell Inn at St. Olaves, the River Bure at Horning (including Percival's boatyard) and Stokesby riverfront. The second is on B&W 16mm film and dates from 1947 when Barry's parents returned to holiday on one of the "Vesta" class from E.C. Landamore's yard at Hoveton. Many thanks to Barry! Carol
  20. Glad that you all enjoyed it too - it's with thanks to Will Downing for sending me the film and allowing me to share it! Yes Howard - thhe rail trip looks as though it was between GY and Reedham and does pass the Berney Arms Halt. Quite interesting to see really. It was great to see the footage of Thurne Lion .... my how that has changed !! Alan - I presume that the pylons are in the vicinity of St. Olaves as this seems to have been the first night stop after leaving the Cobholm Boatyard. I haven't had the chance to study it all too closely yet. I have another couple of short cine films to put on YouTbe over the next couple of weeks - some colour footage from 1939 and a B&W film from 1947. I had some cine film transferred a while ago which included these two films which were given to me by Barry (Springsong) and were filmed by his parents. It's quite exciting to be able to expand the BM archive in this way as they are such a fascinating record of Broadland through the 20th century. Carol
  21. I received a DVD of some 8mm cine footage of a Broadland holiday taken in 1963 this week. The films were recently transferred by the holiday couple's son and he very kindly gave me permission to upload them to YouTube. It's just under 13 minutes in length and shows their cruise on Breydon Lass II which was hired from the Cobholm Boatyard at Great Yarmouth. It looks like an early season trip and features some lovely footage of St. Olaves, sailing at Oulton Broad, Great Yarmouth seafront, Horning, Wroxham and Thurne. More details can be found on the Broadland Memories blog. Carol
  22. Hi Howard As has been said, YouTube is littered with clips from TV shows from the BBC, ITV etc. etc. .....and I suspect that half the YouTube music videos which have been linked to on here in the past originated from TV programmes. The BBC seem to be very hot on getting clips from current shows taken down, but older stuff seems to get through. Probably best not to put "BBC" in the video's title though ! The worst that will happen is it will get taken down and you will just get a notification of that. I think it's a sort of three strikes and you're out type policy with YouTube with things like this. Besides which .... I want to see it ..... send me a link when it's on there please ! Carol
  23. It was impossible to get interior pics without a very wide angle lens! The photos on Pacific's website are very representative and the condition inside was lovely too. I forgot to mention the other advantage that Breeze had over Swift ... the toilet! It is one of the foot pedal, flappy loos (if you know what I mean!), much easier to use than the hand pump variety on Swift. Carol
  24. George Smith's do hire out by the day or night .... but they don't have any boats which will accommodate 6 or 7 people overnight. Carol
