That photo of the titan crane is impressive although it doesn't quite get over the sheer size of the thing. Its a lonely and sad reminder of the once thriving Upper Clyde Ship Builders like John Brown. Think Lusitania, Queen's Elizabeth and Mary and QE2 plus Hood and Repulse. Impressive history.

I could really go to town on this subject! I do worry, likely needlessly, about just how much we rely on technology! There is little in this world that is more certain than one day it will go t*ts up! No cash for that eventuality?? I also think dismissing cash is part of an establishment plot to get folk to part with money. Simple as it sounds, I do think people are more aware of the actual value of their money in actual cash form. Plastic makes spending frighteningly easy and there are many people living in debt, misery and are also homeless as a result. Nuff said! This can really get me angry! Apologies for the thread drift.

At various times I have read opinions that suggest there another pub on the Yare where the owner has desperately been trying to get a change to residential use unsuccessfully, some might suggest this is why the place appears to be a tad on the "scruffy" side! I hasten to add that this is not the one by Breydon.

The Aquafibre 32 "Sandswift" was also owne/run by Maffett Cruisers as "Jay". This might suggest it being worth a closer look even though that was almost 20 years ago! Its quite a rare boat I think!

Ahhh Seagypsy, that could have been the "Narrow Dog To Carcassone" with Terry and Monica Darlington. Was a reasonable entertaining TV series but they were a wee bit "up their own" so to speak!

Sorry Griff but I suspect the "temporary residence" part will also refer to a week or two weeks holiday. After all, we are living on the boats when out.

I had a Belmont SXi and it was very rapid, also became the most stolen car in the UK for a while. Not quite as rapid as the Skoda VRS I had following that!

My first wheels were a "sit up and beg" Ford Anglia E494a vintage 1951'ish. Had a reg of PKT11 and I paid a whole £5.00 for her, I say her because she was christened "Ethel". She was bottle gree and had Ethel in big letter across the roof just above the windscreen. There were many foibles! The wipers worked off the exhaust manifold and were not exactly lightening fast! Had one of the already described pudding stirring gear sticks. Mind you the performance left you almost supine in that you were indanger of falling asleep waiting for any sort of effective forward motion. Took nearly 40 seconds to get to 50mph. The reason for the low price was that she needed a full rear axle. Me and a mate spent two days at a scrappers at Cooper Bridge getting one off the donor car. Our skills didn't run to putting this on the car and a local spanners loved the look and the prospect of the job and did it for me, including relining the brakes for a mere £20. Mind you that was nearly three weekes wages at the time! Memorable times. Interestingly, the reg is now on a Bentley Continental valued at some £90K!

As an illustration of what appears to be the minority opinion here and not on The Broads of course. My local was really struggling due to the demands of said leeches (pubco's), it did that poorly that they eventually put it up for sale. Taken over by a brewer who refurbished the place very sympathetically and also established a micro brewery. You won't find any fizzed "beers" and only Kronenberg and a Czech lager that I can't remember the name of. The rest are his own creations plus a few worthy guests. No food at all except the odd nibble on its quiz night. THe place is packed to the gills every night and is a relaxing delight to imbibe in with a lovely beer garden out the back. Has been thriving for some four years plus now. Wonderful place!

I managed to reverse a Juliette the full length of Horsey Dyke, no problem at all. Boat was solid as a rock to steer in any direction and the wash was impressively minimal.

A brief scan of these suggests to me that there may be some basis for an "debate" on being charged for what is supposedly a public staithe!
