  1. The Broadland Knot master speaking. Having observed knots of generations of visitors and private owners I have come to the conclusion that if you don't know knots "tie lots".

You may find that a well meaning local will tie your boat up for you. Thank him. His effort will be a silly thing. Once he has gone creep up surreptitiously, untie it and create your own magnificent wonder.

The bigger the knot the better. It is your mooring post. Go for it. Fill the post up. If you have got 30 ft of rope, use it. Wrap it round and round. The feel good factor will be unbelievable, don't forget to stand back and admire it, this work of art.

Retire for the night, not for a night cap, we are talking a night hat, a big one. Safe in the knowledge that all is well. Unless the tide turns. Night night sweet repose, half the bed and all the clothes.

  2. All sound advice. And one constantly learns from others and their experiences. I have seen accidents on the Broads, thankfully no fatalities, but close, very close.

I have seen injuries that have ruined holidays, injuries that have changed people's lives. Injuries that could have been avoided If only they had followed the basic rules which most helm and crew follow. Regrettably not all.

However I know a man, a tiler aptly named, who only allows those who are qualified to join his crew. If not, they are given instruction before they cast off.

It would be of interest, of benefit, to us all if this man of experience would be willing, to give us an insight to his knowledge and experience. Perhaps in the fullness of time he would give it a shot!

  3. Try wiping with isopropyl alcohol wipes. Used by the medical profession before injections prior to intravenous procedure. The isopropyl must be in a solution of at least 70%. Used by tattoists and nail bars. May also be used in antibacterial hand jell.

  4. Please read again Victorvy comment. I have escaped death from this cancer due to early intervention. ,(for the time being). Any issues, any doubts or fears please pm me. I am not a doctor. I have been invited on more than one occasion to meet with trainee doctors at the University here in Norwich to discuss issues as part of their training.

I will not advise you. I am not medical qualified. But I know a man who is. It may be peace of mind that you seek. He is a qualified cancer nurse of many years experience working for the Big C.

If anyone of you have concerns I would be pleased to make the introduction. Nothing more nothing less. I would have no further involvement.

Keep safe for your family and yourself.

    Andrew.

It must be about a balance between the two.

If it goes on longer than needed there is a very real risk of stringent cuts to services and much higher taxes in the future.

Austerity will be the watch word for many years otherwise.

I think that austerity will be with us for many years. Come what may.

  7. It may be of interest to some that the reserve at Strumpshaw is not owned by the RSPB.

It is leased. It is my belief that certain formalities would have to be agreed between the two parties if such a venture as a quay heading were to be sanctioned

  8. My dear Nog

It is nigh on the witching hour. Why do you thus tempt me with pubs and houses of disrepute in my hour of need. What further sufferance must I bare in my dotage.

May the tide be with you.

It's all the other info from official sources that say that some going out is ok, including driving that causes confusion.

Making posts that say "what part of that do people not understand" suggests you haven't read a lot of the posts here that discuss the growing list of things you can do that aren't at home.

Just follow the STAY AT HOME advice.

The rest will cause confusion as it would seem to demonstrate that I have read the posts on here and that many have not.

    A sobering moment.
Earlier this evening an ambulance and paramedic vehicle arrived at my neighbours house. The cold, hard reality of the situation that we all face dawned at the sight of three ambulance service crew kitted out in full protective suits. Fully enclosed masks and plugged into some kind of respirator they looked like astronauts. The whole scene surreal. Disturbing. Science Fiction made reality out on my street. My neighbour's family members arrived but were denied access and instead waited outside the house, practising social distancing in a situation where human contact would be a first instinct. Hours ticked by and the ambulance did not move and finally left once the undertaker  arrived and carried out his solemn duty with as much dignity as possible encumbered with a similar protective gear to that worn by the ambulance crew.

The street is now silent. You know what? Life is just too short, precarious and precious. Tomorrow is a new day and I wish all of my family, friends and acquaintances, wherever they are, just be safe and healthy!

    Timbo.

I looked for an emoticon. A like, a sad, a sorry. There is not one. There will never be one. On reflection there will never be an appropriate symbol to express ones feelings, sympathy, understanding.

But there is a very personal and private vision, that of faith, yours alone not every bodies. Your hope, not to be shared.

    But respected.

    By all of us.

  12. Pam Ayers has been at it again. I think she wrote this for all the oldish girls out there.

    I'm normally a social girl
I love to meet my mates
But lately with the virus here
We can't go out the gates.
You see, we are the 'oldies' now
    We need to stay inside
If they haven't seen us for a while
They'll think we've upped and died.
They'll never know the things we did
    Before we got this old
    There wasn't any Facebook
    So not everything was told.
We may seem sweet old ladies
    Who would never be uncouth
But we grew up in the 60s -
If you only knew the truth!
There was sex and drugs and rock 'n roll
    The pill and miniskirts
We smoked, we drank, we partied
    And were quite outrageous flirts.
Then we settled down, got married
    And turned into someone's mum,
    Somebody's wife, then nana,
Who on earth did we become?
We didn't mind the change of pace
    Because our lives were full
But to bury us before we're dead
Is like a red rag to a bull!
So here you find me stuck inside
    For 4 weeks, maybe more
    I finally found myself again
Then I had to close the door!
    It didnt really bother me
    I'd while away the hour
I'd bake for all the family
But I've got no flaming  flour!
    Now Netflix is just wonderful
    I like a gutsy thriller
    I'm swooning over Idris
    Or some random sexy killer.
At least I've got a stash of booze
    For when I'm being idle
There's wine and whiskey,  even gin
    If I'm feeling suicidal!
So let's all drink to lockdown
    To recovery and health
    And hope this awful virus
    Doesn't decimate our wealth.
We'll all get through the crisis
And be back to join our mates
Just hoping I'm not far too wide

To fit through the flaming gates!

  13. A huge amount of money must have been spent on the site to little avail. No doubt the bridge still remains. I wonder if they found the treasure of cigarettes, nylons, cigars and cognac that was buried there.

And how have they invested that profit, instead of just paying exorbitant tax on it?  By investing it in capital, for the building of new boats, I imagine?

And do we think that £500,000, is a lot of profit, for a business like those that we are now calling "fat cats"?

Indeed. Does this figure of 500,000 not relate to the annual turnover of the company , is relative to the annual turnover, profitability and viability of the company for the future. Concern which surely must be taken into consideration for the future plus the companies assets, it's liabilities. Not mentioned by some. They prefer to believe that the owners trouser this sum of money at the end of the season.

Watch very carefully Easyjet, take note of other airlines, take note of the recent demise of one of our local airlines. We live in very precarious times the Broads hire industry is not immune to financial gravity.

Finally I must refer to the present discussion with regard to the Broads Authority. For those who have a disposable income to enjoy the broads and I emphasise disposable income for boating that they resent paying their toll. I'm OK with that. However may I ask for that which you wish to return.

not getting into an argument about it, andrew asked how tt got info  so i pointed this out, and investments have been factored in before this point

It is not as simple as it may seem Mike. The variable costs of running a business can be daunting. Who could have anticipated this particular issue and who amongst us can anticipate it's consequences. You will not find the answer in the accounts, within the balance sheet. But you may discover that which we seek in the future.

May I ask who will pay the ferry man?

  16. This is not the first time TT has had a pop at "the boat yards". Completely unjustified from my view point. Where does he get this financial information from? Is he privy to that which is disclosed in the board room. I think not.
