  1. I can feel the Neanderthal grunt making a comeback and will become recognised as the correct and formal method of introduction, conversation and goodby. Complemented by the trusty smart phone. Until of course the battery runs out.

    The wherry appears to be loaded with timber.

    Well that is the old boy who nicked it. All those trees.

    I like trees. Here on the Broads we are blessed with a huge variety of trees and long may we protect them. Have you ever been to the lock gates at Coltishall and walked to the road bridge through the wonderful avenue of trees. What are they. Hornbeam.

    Thousands walk to Salhouse broad, generations in the fullness of time. My grandchildren still marvel at the gnarled oak trees and play as I did amongst the fragile trunks.

    I love the trees of Broadland and long may they be allowed to enhance our landscape and contribute to our ever threatened wild life.

    Trees

    I think that I shall never see
    A poem lovely as a tree.

    A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
    Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;

    A tree that looks at God all day,
    And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

    A tree that may in Summer wear
    A nest of robins in her hair;

    Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
    Who intimately lives with rain.

    Poems are made by fools like me,
    But only God can make a tree.

    I spotted that one as we were coming home from the boat.

    It was easy to spot from a good distance though, so anyone

    caught on it wasn't paying attention.......

    If you have spotted him, he has spotted you. His equipment will have recorded your speed before you were able to register his intent. His on board camera will then capture up your number plate and relate that to the laser reading as you pass within the speed limit.

  4. I have just been hit by two bills from my garage, one for £440 and today £360. Rats eating the wiring. Thus immobilising the car on each occasion.

    Have any boat owners experienced rat damage

  5. I always favoured the west bridge, nearest Jenner's. The east bridge, nearest Hearts, gave you an extra inch. However, by the time you got to the East bridge, on a rising tide you had lost the advantage, and the tip from the holiday maker to boot.

    Thank you Pally, Not what I wanted to hear but such is life.

    I still think there must be some solution to this problem. The waste isn't new, and the money for it's disposal hasn't (significantly) changed,

    But the money is no longer there. It is no longer there for so many, no longer there for so many worthy causes. No longer there for that which we took for granted only a few years ago.

    Do you know what John. I have seen in Tesco's, for several months now, if not a couple of years, a bin. By the exit door. For people to donate food for the poor and disadvantaged of Norwich.

    People who are so desperate that they have to rely on the charity of others for such basic requirements.

    I never thought that in my life time I would ever see such a public demonstration of help in my city.

    There is little or no money left to pay for the disposal of waste by the local authorities for boat waste. People who enjoy the pleasure of boating must now come to terms with the realisation that they, be it hirers or private owners have to pay for disposal. A concept which many deprived people find difficulty in accepting that they have up until now accepted as their responsibility.

    Ring the Parish Clerk and agree a price!

    Well, that certainly is an option. During office hours I suspect. What about High days and holidays. Weekends and bank holidays.

    Gulp!

    I would retire to The Buck and sneak out of the mooring under the cover of darkness and take my chance.

  8. I am sure that my question has been raised before.

    If you have to leave the Thorpe St Andrew river green mooring immediately after your 24 hour period has elapsed, what happens if you are unable to go under either of the railway bridges because of the tide.

    Or, indeed could squeeze under but lack of confidence prevents an attempt.

    Ask the audience, phone a friend, go for 50/50?

    Or ring the Parish Clerk?

    I was going to say you haven't met us then Andrew  but wait a minute, you have!!

    Indeed. I remember. A wonderful pint in the Malsters at Ranworth. I was dragged away under duress by the enemy. She who knows me so well. A session in the making, sadly not to be. Please keep me in the loop when you are next in the parish so that I may create a diversion.

  10. I believe that those people who decide to visit, cruise the rivers during the winter months, are experienced and considerate people. I cannot ever envisage a situation where they would create a situation where other people, other winter boaters would be disadvantaged by unreasonable behaviour.

  11. Thanks for your reply Vaughan, as ever a fountain of knowledge always welcome in these modern times.

    There is however your closing comment:

    "At present, access has been closed off by the council and I for one, question their right to do this."

    Has this not always been thus. I seem to remember your father, Commander Ashby having  to retire to the Buck to escape the unreasonable and draconian rules and regulations which were imposed upon Hearts Cruisers.

    So when you say access has been closed off by the council do you mean vehicle access? Does this mean mother and a child in a pushchair, or indeed disabled parishioners in wheelchairs  or invalid vehicles. Please correct me if I am wrong but I cannot remember any provision being made with regard to those with mobility issues.

  12. Did not these names originate from the wherry men and their families. Each length of river, from bend to bend was a reach and each was given a name. Some of course were of little significance but many of importance with regard to ease of navigation and to this day are known to some, but will be lost in the fullness of time.

    As will the names of local staiths and moorings as urbanisation takes its relentless toll together with seemingly disregard of concern by the authorities of those who choose to moor or reside long term in places which is seen as inappropriate by many.

  13. One aspect of these rescues has constantly amazed me and that is simply the speed in which the emergency services arrive on scene.
    When you consider the maze of narrow country lanes that exist in Norfolk and Suffolk and access to the rivers is limited in many cases, especially if you are trailing a rib or driving a large fire engine.
    Add to the mix a large number of holiday makers do not know where they are, where they have been or indeed where they are going!
    Yet, time and time again, seemingly against all the odds, when many people might just give up and say they cannot possibly get there in time, they  do.
    I think that is truly remarkable and would seem to demonstrate to me that a lot of training, co-operation and resources have been put in place, behind the scenes, for which we must all be truly grateful.

  14. When the RNLI are called out to an incident on Breydon or wherever come to that is there a charge made to the individual concerned ? To the boatyard concerned. Or to a third party concerned, or a charge made against the Broads Authority. Or is the cost involved, and everything comes with a price, funded by charity.

    If the Broads Authority were to take responsibility, perhaps involving several man hours, there will be a cost.  Which they just might just decide would be better absorbed by others.

  15. Ranworth was there first stop.

    They all got in with a wriggle and a squiggle. The BA ranger was there to help. HW staff as well. The children well behaved, polite, and a pleasure to welcome. The staff, attentive and caring. Long may this event be an annual event.

    That's an excellent idea with the mooring ropes, as a lot of hire boats have ropes which are far too short, owning our own boat and often Single handing I lead the bow rope back to the Stern so I can step off with both ropes so yes a good length required.

    Should be standard on all hire boats. I cannot understand why it should be exclusive to solo hire.
