  1. In an ideal world i would define a suitable boat as one that has an engine that runs on oxygen and is invisible so cant attract a toll, being invisible it would fit under all the bridges, fit in anywhere and take up no space, oh and the manufacturer would give it to me for free.....I think i have been watching to much late night sci fi !

  2. The thing about it that I fail to understand is why people would want boats with seagoing capabilities for broads use when i would guess at 90% of them neither having the skills or intentions to ever take the boat out to sea anyway.

I can totally understand the appeal of the internal fitout and luxury many of these boats will undoubtedly offer but offset that luxury against the increase in fuel and maintenance costs I would still prefer a single screw 50hp for broads use any day.

As JM has indicated these boats just dont suit there surroundings and may have been causing the broads industry more harm than good? Certainly a different way of looking at things and not a viewpoint that should be dismissed.

As I said I dont care what boat you have its not my money being spent but why buy such a vessel then feel agrieved at the costs involved and lack of infrastructure!

Single and twin screw is a clear difference as is sail and power.  We only have to look at the cost of an annual toll for an outboard dinghy to see that the toll tariff is in need of tweaking.

Im not suggesting that all seagoing vessels should be sent out to sea but at the same time I dont think its fair that a single engined and twin engined vessel pay the same toll tariff, there could well be more toll money in the pot if the BA started looking at it a little bit differently.

Toll to value is probably an unfair way of looking at it but I dont see how paying more by number of engines could really be argued with.   Its similar to owning a 4x4, many people dont need them and will pay more into the system for having them.

If people dont want to pay then they will move them away but I imagine that most will just get on and live with the cost and the broads could well turn out better because if it!

  3. In terms of value to toll, i think there are people at the top end getting an incredibly good deal.

Thats just my view, it doesnt mean its right!

  4. Senator these people pay there dues and can do what they like with their boats suited or unsuited!     A handful of boats leaving in real terms are probably of little consequence, how many new boats might be arriving to replace them?

It all sounds a bit like sour grapes to me, especially a boat having a free mooring and still leaving to avoid paying a toll increase....cutting off nose to spite face springs to mind.

I do believe if enough boats moved on to pastures new it might create a bit more space and put less demand on private marinas hence lowering mooring fees (we wish) but as I said in the grand scheme of things a handful of boats moving on isnt going to change much in my opinion anyway.

For the record I dont care what boat you have the broads are for all to enjoy, will I miss the people who are spitting their dummies out, no probably not !

  5. Might not be a popular view point but i firmly believe the BA have been missing a trick for many many years.

There could easily be a different toll rate for single screw and twin screw craft

  6. Exactly what I was thinking JM

I can only surmise most seagoing owners on the broads are here to avoid waves.........which must defeat the object just a little

  7. How are the private sea going vessels the biggest contributors when the hire firms are paying the levels of toll they are.  I doubt many of these vessels exceed the hire toll, or do they?

  8. We will be in this situation next week as ours is coming out for some TLC so this is all good information, especially the Brick Acid, id have been in a chandlers next week looking for cleaning products at inflated prices if Id not read this thread as I would never have known a patio cleaner would be ok to use on GRP.  Smiths at Oulton Broad it is then!

    hopefully the link works

Chief Exec salary at a little over 100k per annum and we are expected to be a supportive of another Tolls Increase, these are the figure for 2013/2014 so it will be interesting to see if he had a payrise.  Nobody needs 100k per annum in order to live a reasonably comfortable life.  Interestingly operations salaries at over a million and over 500k on rangers.  How many staff do the BA have?

  10. Please correct me if I am wrong here but local authorities (the councils) publish details of Chief Executive's and other big wigs salaries usually to be found somewhere on thier website?  Im sure i have seen this on a few council websites over the years  anyway.

Do the BA do this does anyone know and if not why not!

  11. I can see the sense in buying the boat back for a refurb but surely any part of the boat thats been made out of wood is going to pretty kaput.

Ive seen the damage to ply bulkheads water ingress from leaky hull fittings can cause. I dread to think what paneling etc would look like after being flooded.

Im not trying to put you off but whatever you do with your boat I would have thought its going to be a lot of work and more than just cosmetic.  If theres any ply onboard thats surely got to go as that soaks water up like a sponge!

  12. This may not be a popular stance but they say a toll increase is for restoration works above potter bridge.  What about those boat owners (which will be many of us) that have boats which cant even go up there, why should we take a toll increase for an area we could never  make use of.

What about lottery funding? Other projects seem to get it for areas closed off to navigation.

In my opinion the BA will eventually criple the broads for both the hire yard operators and private owners.  Before they start taking more and more from the toll payers a look at their own spending should be carried out.  Are the ever audited? How much are they wasting each year, it could well be quite a lot. If the BA decided they want to dye the water bright pink who could stop them?

I dont want to appear selfish but every organisation a person can be finanicially connected always wants more more more.  As far as the BA go what have they been doing with the toll money they have been getting all these years.

No im not likely to sell my boat as the increase on my toll isnt going to break the bank but another few years of increases may well do.  There comes a point where enoughs enough.  I feel for the hire operators whom increases must affect the most.

Ive said it before, there are other ways to generate more toll income without having effect on all those in the middle of the spectrum, or those trying to make a business pay.

  13. Have to agree, the boat looked rotten to the core at the beginning and at the end it still looked rotten but with a fresh coat of flaking paint.   Fair play to the guy for taking it on,  its a shame his romance jumped ship. I wouldnt have thought he would get much more than he paid for it still

  14. Sorry if this has already been brought up i did have a look through the threads and couldnt see owt.

Saw today a sunken sports canopy type cruiser maybe 20 - 27ft tied alongside the large tug type vessel moored just before the Beauchamp arms when coming along from Reedham.  The line was holding the bow above water with the sunk vessel leaning almost over onto its side.

I didnt see it on my way up river yesterday, thats not to say it wasnt there however!

    Anybody know what occured.

  15. I drive a now year old 1.5Diesel Injection (Renault) Never seen any smoke from its exhaust. The modern and that's the trick, the word Modern engines are far more cleaner and fuel efficient, IMHO of course.

    cheersIain.

Completely agree Iain, we are a 2 diesel family, a 2008 vehicle with 130000 miles on the clock and a 2014 vehicle with 10000 on the clock, ive never seen either of them smoke and ive driven behind both vehicles at one time or another and I atleast have never noticed any nasty niffs.

There are diesels that do smell and I notice it to be from older diesel vehicles, usually poorly maintained looking transit vans etc etc

In my opinion modern diesels are far superior to the earlier motors but each to their own.

  16. Its a big bugger underneath, i had a look at it one day in the shed hauled out on the marine railway.  I know its been well looked after since coming off the hire fleet, it was the only one Mr Sabberton held on to and didnt initially lease to another operator or eventually sell on.  He kept hold of it for his own use.  Ive not seen him for a few years now but I imagine it would be quite a good buy, granted there are some improvements that could be made but im not sure there are many people who would take on a boat that size and want to give it an indepth cosmetic overhaul, one reason being it would be unlikely the money required to do it would ever be realised in a future sale price.

Ive never been a fan of the carpeted bulkheads either, i suppose they did it in those days due to the stuff being so hard wearing, its not as cheap as you would think either!
