  1. No worries! That is what the red top newspapers are for. Anybody who was born just after the (don't mention the war) as I was it was not a problem.
  2. Why would one want to repel "rampant young ladies from Essex"?
  3. This is serious! Was it not an iceberg that sunk the Titanic? Lettuce growers have a lot to answer for. Personally I prefer Little Gems or Romaine lettuces. Please! do not allow icebergs whatever you pay for them on the Broads.
  4. No doubt he or it is not one of our lot. Usually "our lot" usually have a bit of common sense. Unfortunately with all the media coverage of fast cars doing all sorts of things off road tends to make morons such as this potential homicidal maniac do things like that on our public highways.
  5. Hi. Perhaps you should moor up at Ludham Bridge and wander up the road and have a few beers and a meal at the Dog. They only do lunchtimes meals and evening meals but the food is of good quality. There are extensive moorings there, a water point, a little café that does breakfasts and a convenience shop that caters for most bits and pieces. Enjoy your holiday, kind regards, thingamybob.
  6. Not a good idea. Many years ago when I was in my twenties I used to ice skate on my local lake in the winter. I still have my ice skates incidentally. It is a bit too warm to expect ice to support you nowadays. Be safe, keep off the ice.
  7. Thanks shipmate. Brain (when I found it) was not in connection with my thumbs.
  8. That's why I always tell new hirers that I meet to read the manual supplied with the boat before even reaching Acle or Reedham or Somerleyton depending whichever way they are going.
  9. Possibly p188ed when going aground? You should have seen the wobbly trench it ploughed in the mud! Most places where the bottom is too near the top are marked with yellow or red sticks on Hickling Basically if you can get under PH bridge you have no trouble in going a bit off course on Hickling except for picking up a bit of weed in the Summer and early Autumn months. Don't worry ginbottle, just go and have lots of fun especially if you like the wildlife and nature of the area. Go in the Spring and you will be treated to the call of the Bittern across the reedbeds, barn owls and a myriad of wild waterfowl, butterflies and dragonflies. if you can get in on the staithe you are assured of some excellent beers and food at the Pleasure Boat pub. Enjoy.
  10. AARGH! Its all gone pear shaped.
  11. Hi ginbottle. I think the subject has been well covered by the above posts so I am not going to enlarge on the subject except to say that the only problem you may encounter outside the posts is weed. The main channel is kept clear by the boat traffic cutting the stuff up. In general, you will not go aground on Hickling and you will often see large boats swinging at anchor way off the fairway with impunity. Also think of all the sailing boats with their long keels often sailing up very close to the reeds. Don't worry, go and enjoy yourself, I think the Hickling/Horsey area is the best bit of the Broads. By the way, don't go off the fairway on Breydon............. Otherwise this happens:
  12. It is also rumoured that I will buy a round of drinks......one day.
  13. Hi everybody. I bought one of Norfolk Marine's own make of inflatable lifejacket a couple of years ago. It is a well made item and has the trusted UML inflation system. The firing capsule is very easy to replace, albeit a bit more expensive. I paid around £45.00 for it. This jacket would be ideal for the stated use.
