I think there is also a lot of truth in the saying  “ there is no such thing as bad publicity”

Most people come to the broads for the 1st time, either by word of mouth, or are taken by experienced friends or family. I can’t remember the last time I seen an advert on mainstream tv by Hoseasons or Richardsons for a boating holiday on the broads?

I am sure I am not just imagining that there was adverts once upon a time?

Maybe there are regional commercials but they don’t make it all the way up to Bonnie Scotland. Social media is here to stay, and it’s not all bad. You are on a form of it right this second 🤪.

It would be interesting to know for example if anybody watching the rascals clips were convinced to try for the 1 st time, or did 99% watch them, because they already had the bug?

We watched because after a life long wish to have a boating holiday we finally booked. I thought it best to look for advice and experiences from others. So glad I did, as things like crossing Breydon and mooring were made much easier.

Firstly, thank you Grendel, for starting this debate on what I might call the "open" forum.

And now, here's the dinosaur in me : I just can't get my head around the economics of all this.  In the business world that I am used to, you manufacture your product and then your customers come and buy it.

If I view something on Youtube, I don't pay for it - it comes for free.  But all these little bloggers can make what seems to be a good living just by getting lots of clicks for their "efforts".  So who is actually paying them?  The clickers certainly are not and I can't see how Youtube is, either.  So how does this new multi billion Pound industry sustain itself?  And how does Elon Musk make so much money, just out of everybody's silly little tweets?

Or was my mother wrong all along, and money really does grow on trees?

Google AdSense pay monetized YouTubers, figures I've seen quote between ten and thirty pounds per thousand views, depending  on things such as subscriber numbers.

As far as online banking goes I had a spare current account after doing a manual account change so decided to do a little switching experiment, since January I'm now £750 up and just done the 4th switch, just got to watch for the next switching deal now, just needed 2 direct debits to qualify (2 charities made about £16) and had to put some cash in and use the app for one so I used the app to take the cash back out again.

It's nice to get one over the banks for a change.

Amateur. :default_cool: I've had seven bank switches in 16 months, and am well over 1k up. When the time limit for switching runs out I'll start again. The only one I thought wouldn't take me, but they did, was Co-Op bank. It was in January and one of the questions was 'how long have you had your present account'? I almost felt embarrassed typing 'December 2023', almost!

    Today in a neighbouring village I saw a vehicle sporting a private reg plate - ' T O W 1 E'

Now imagine having an IQ low enough to want that displayed on your pride and joy :default_rofl:

I've just done a very silly thing, ordered a portable barbeque, one of those little ones with a fan. There will be a summer sometime I think.

Summer is on a Thursday afternoon this year.

and in with the new along with a healthy reduction in BIK tax.  I also get 359hp to play with!

Nice, but if I had 359hp to play with I wouldn't have my license for much longer. 😜

  7. Took Mrs two to a garden centre three weeks ago, for Christmas decorations (apologies) and I waited in the car (only three years old) whilst she shopped. When she returned the car wouldn't start and a key error code came up. I phoned the RAC and they attended within an hour, ringing me to tell me they were on their way. One of the cells in the battery had been a battery cell too long, they changed the battery for a new one, no complaints from me whatsoever. :default_icon_e_smile:

With a fairly strong Sussex accent, or at least ‘anywhere in rural England with Sussex words thrown in’ accent, when I was teaching my pupils always reckoned I came from Australia.
And with living in Yorkshire for the past 37 years, the Sussex is still stronger, no hint of Yorkshire. My two children, born in east Yorkshire and in east yorks schools not far from Hull (now folk from school do have a very distinctive accent), and with all their friends speaking with local accents, STILL didn’t pick it up.
My verdict - Sussex must rule over Yorkshire.

Odd that, I have a Hullensian accent and on visits to America have often been asked if I'm Australian, cheeky bleeders! :default_icon_rolleyes:

  9. Shed's Law, tools/implements/junk expand to fill a shed to its maximum. I tidy my two sheds out every few months, in between some ratbag fills it up with junk, one day I'll catch them in the act! :default_dry:

To be honest, you either agree with and pay the charge or pay it under protest, or you don't pay the charge. Being awkward by paying in pennies would put you on the back foot if you took things to court.

I think I'm also right in saying that the 1p is only legal tender up to 20p. Beyond that it is only legal if the seller and buyer both reach agreement. So in effect you could be shooting yourself in the foot if you paid £10 in pennies and the BA took it.

    Edited to add the following;

Legal tender in this country is as follows,

For £2 and £1 coins, any amount

For 50p and 20p coins up to £10

For 10p and 5p coins up to £5

For 2p and 1p coins up to 20 pence.

Here's the catch. Paying an invoice with non - legal tender coins leaves the door open for the debtor to be sued for non payment.

There's lots of YouTube videos showing people paying at petrol stations with £20 and £50, and £100 coins. After much arguing, and often police involvement, the petrol stations back down and accept payment as they argue they're not legal tender, they are. They buy the coins from eBay for less than face value.

One guy, Julian Chamberlain, was arrested on suspicion of fraud, no charges followed and he sued the police and was awarded £5000 compensation.

    Why ???

Manchester City played for 2 seasons without a No 9 since Sergio Auguro left

    They didn't too badly 😁

This year they have probably the best striker in the world and are in danger of not retaining the title 😳

Having said that I wish Frank Lampard all the best I always thought he was a top player and is also a top manager

Top player, as a manager though average at Derby, below  average at Chelsea and Everton.
